Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Mountain Front Recharge Flow Paths And Their Contribution To Alluvial Aquifer Water Supply, Mikaela Bollag-Miller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Mountain Front Recharge (MFR) is a critical recharge source for alluvial basin aquifers throughout the Intermountain West, yet the spatial and temporal dynamics of distinct recharge pathways remain poorly constrained. This study investigates the seasonal and spatial dynamics of MFR pathways and evaluates their impact on the Missoula Aquifer, a sole-source alluvial aquifer in western Montana, USA. MFR includes both surface-water inflows from mountain areas and Mountain Block Recharge (MBR), the groundwater contribution to the basin aquifer. A valley-scale water balance was employed to estimate first-order contributions and temporal fluctuations of MBR flow paths. A three-layer steady-state MODFLOW groundwater model …

Sparse Gradient Training For Recommender Systems, Yunke Qu, Liang Qu, Tong Chen, Xiangyu Zhao, Jianxin Li, Hongzhi Yin

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Recommender systems are widely applied in numerous online platforms such as shopping and social media platforms. They typically utilize large embedding tables that map users and items to dense vectors of uniform sizes. As the number of users and items continues to grow, this design leads to significant memory consumption and computational inefficiencies. This challenge is particularly pronounced in scenarios such as federated learning, where model parameters are updated locally on edge devices with limited computational resources before being transmitted to a central server for aggregation. Numerous approaches have been proposed to address this issue, among which embedding pruning methods …

Beyond Words: A Systematic Multimodal Framework For Text, Images, And Extreme Helpfulness In Online Reviews, Alvaro J. Aguado Marin

Dissertations

Online product reviews have become increasingly multimodal, combining text with media-rich elements such as images. However, academic research has largely examined textual features in isolation, overlooking how visual content and its interaction with text shape perceived helpfulness. This dissertation addresses that gap by developing and empirically validating a comprehensive framework capturing how textual, visual, and contextual features collectively influence review evaluation. Grounded in the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and extended through the Text-Image Elaboration Likelihood Model (TI-ELM), the framework advances understanding of how consumers process content from both user- and business-generated sources. It also lays the foundation for examining emerging …

Computational Design Of Nanoporous Materials For The Adsorption Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, Daniel D. Mottern Dec 2025

Computational Design Of Nanoporous Materials For The Adsorption Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, Daniel D. Mottern

Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of chemicals that have seen wide usage due to their fluorinated carbon backbone. The presence of strong C-F bonds in the backbone lends PFAS molecules high thermal and chemical stability, as well as strong hydrophobicity and lipophobicity. This combination of properties has led to heavy use of PFAS as surfactants, non-stick coatings, and aqueous foam forming films and flame retardants. However, these properties bring their own consequences. The high chemical and thermal stability of PFAS renders them persistent, with the C-F bonds resisting naturally occurring forms of degradation. Existing forms of …

From Enhancement To Substitution: A Strategic Provocation On Simulation-Based Sport, Grant B. Morgan, Andreas Stamatis Dec 2025

From Enhancement To Substitution: A Strategic Provocation On Simulation-Based Sport, Grant B. Morgan, Andreas Stamatis

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Advances in artificial intelligence, large-scale machine learning, and simulation technologies are rapidly transforming how sport is played, analyzed, and consumed. To date, most scholarly and industry discussions frame these technologies as tools that enhance embodied sport by improving performance, officiating, media production, and fan engagement. This paper extends that conversation by posing a more provocative strategic question: under what conditions might simulation move from enhancement to substitution? Focusing explicitly on sport as a business and entertainment enterprise, we argue that many of sport’s core sources of cultural and economic value—uncertainty of outcome, narrative continuity, legitimacy, and collective meaning—are structurally …

(R2164) The Nature Of The Big Bang Singularity In Inhomogeneous Szekeres Cosmological Frameworks, Ahmed M. Al-Haysah, Abdul-Majeed Al-Izeri Dec 2025

(R2164) The Nature Of The Big Bang Singularity In Inhomogeneous Szekeres Cosmological Frameworks, Ahmed M. Al-Haysah, Abdul-Majeed Al-Izeri

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Without killing vector fields, the Szekeres metric is an explicit example of an anisotropic and inhomogeneous solution to the Einstein equations. The inhomogeneous Szekeres cosmological models (ISCM) within the Big Bang singularity (BBS) are obtained. This indicates that the Szekeres solution represents a more general class of exact solutions. It is known to exhibit axial symmetry. We investigate a Big Bang theory of the cosmos, which unexpectedly predicts that the universe started at the so-called BBS a finite length of time ago. A growing number of astrophysical researchers are using inhomogeneous extensions of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) solution and, by extension, …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This study highlights the potential of organometallic carbonyl complexes as selective markers for biomolecules, enabling sensitive infrared (IR) detection. The regio- and stereoselective coupling of N-acetylhistamine, a histidine analogue, with the precursor complex 1 [Fe(CO)₃(1,4-η⁵-N-pyridiniocyclohexa-1,3-diene)] BF₄ affords the labeled complex 3 [Fe(CO)₃(1,4-η⁵-N-acetylhistaminocyclohexa-1,3-diene)]. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the exo stereochemistry and reveals a rigid, well-defined architecture. IR and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies combined with IR-monitored acid–base titration demonstrate the complex’s stability in aqueous media between pH 5 and 8, alongside a modest increase in basicity relative to the free ligand. These findings establish the Fe(CO)₃ moiety as a robust …
