Malonic Acid Synthesis, Mary K. Hormuth Jun 1945

Malonic Acid Synthesis, Mary K. Hormuth

Bachelors’ Theses

The search for new organic compounds, the discovery of their proper ties and the utilization of them, both in the industrial and the biological field has always been the challenge to the organic and research chemist. In particular, the study of fatty acids and their related compounds has been the particular problem to not only the physiological chemist, but also the industrial chemist. The research in this direction has tremendous possibilities tor only the even carbon and normal chain acids have been isolated in nature. Here difficulty is often met when trying to establish and identify this type of acid …

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart Apr 1945

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.

The peculiar land situation that marked America in her forma~ …

Progress Report On The Ground-Water Resources Of The Las Vegas Artesian Basin, Nevada, George B. Maxey, C. Harry Jameson Mar 1945

Progress Report On The Ground-Water Resources Of The Las Vegas Artesian Basin, Nevada, George B. Maxey, C. Harry Jameson

Publications (WR)

Whether the tremendously increased population acquired by Las Vegas in the years 1940 to 1942 will be retained cannot at present be foretold. However, the valley will undoubtedly be expected to support a considerably larger population than it did at any time prior to 1940, and continually increasing demands on the water supply for innumerable pcacetimc activities must be anticipated. Therefore, a sound evaluation of tho ground water resources of Las Vegas Valley is directly in line with the other wisely progressive planning programs which are now operating or are taking shape in the valley as well as in the …

Dielectric Properties Of Various Organic Compounds, Joyce Elaine Eiling Feb 1945

Dielectric Properties Of Various Organic Compounds, Joyce Elaine Eiling

Bachelors’ Theses

Condensers are widely used for many purposes. These devices are employed in one form or another in radio transmitting and allied industries such as television and amplifier circuits. They are used in automatic equipment, telephone, telegraph, and railway signal equipment as well as in condenser type motors. Condensers reduce sparking and arcing at contact relay points, switches, circuit breakers, time clocks, and thermostats. A vital part of a condenser is the dielectric. In present day condensers mineral oil is used extensively.

The purpose of this investigation is to study other organic compounds in an effort to find a good di …

The Influence Of Heat On Some Properties Of Triethanolamine Soaps, Hetty Ricker Feb 1945

The Influence Of Heat On Some Properties Of Triethanolamine Soaps, Hetty Ricker

Bachelors’ Theses

In modern times the field of chemistry has a broad scope and even a broader horizon. Yet for a girl the field is limited. One of the few industries in which she is capable and has a slight advantage is that of the cosmetic industry. In this field chemistry is used in the manufacture of lipsticks, shampoos, oils and creams. Research to improve these items is continually going on with a hope of finding cheaper and better products than those compounds already in use.

Nyssa Woods Of The Pacific-Northwest Tertiary, George F. Beck Feb 1945

Nyssa Woods Of The Pacific-Northwest Tertiary, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The nyssa gums are one of the modern genera of trees most certainly present among the petrified woods and forests of the Pacific Northwest. Almost every collection from the mid-Tertiary of this region contains a few specimens of typical tupelo or sour gum. These are fine-grained woods which to the unaided eye may be mistaken for conifers.

Comparison Of Census Methods For Pheasants In Nebraska, H. Elliot Mcclure

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

In plans for the Nebraska Upland Game Bird Pittman Robinson Project the censusing of pheasants and tabulation of population densities was of prime importance. A summary of the data at hand and a comparison of the various methods tried will be discussed here.

Occupational Chemical Hazards In Industries Of Louisville And Jefferson County., Morgan Brown Lewman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The facts and conclusions presented in the following pages are the results of figures gathered during two and one half years of work as an Industrial Hygiene Engineer for the Louisville and Jefferson County Health Department. The factual information was acquired from many sources including extensive reading to which reference is made of the more recent publications in the bibliography and also from correspondence and discussions with authorities in various fields. Much data was gained from "in-service training" received at the United States Public Health Service; Bureau of Industrial Hygiene, Bethesda, Maryland; University of Michigan; National Conference of Governmental Industrial …

Ancient Maples Of The Central Washington Region, George F. Beck Nov 1944

Ancient Maples Of The Central Washington Region, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

When I began work on the petrified logs of the general Vantage area some 13 years ago, it became apparent at once that maple-like woods are commonplace in the main (Vantage) raft forest and slightly less abundant in two rooted units of the Yakima Canyon. So widely do these woods range throughout the structural variations found in modern maples that little success has attended the efforts to assign them to nominal species. The extremes can readily be established but few hints exist as to the boundaries between them.

An Investigation Of The Nature Of The Coefficients Of Entire Function, Marie Ann Philips Oct 1944

An Investigation Of The Nature Of The Coefficients Of Entire Function, Marie Ann Philips

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of the coefficients of certain power series. In particular, it is desired to know what characteristics the coefficients must possess in order that the series shall represent an entire function.

The Solubility Of Zinc Ethyl Xanthate In Water, Thomas M. Mckenzie Oct 1944

The Solubility Of Zinc Ethyl Xanthate In Water, Thomas M. Mckenzie

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

A determination of the solubility of zinc ethyl xanthate was attempted by measuring the refractive index of a saturated solution of that salt. The small increment in refractive index effected by adding zinc ethyl xanthate to water in saturation quantities rendered measurements difficult and of dubious accuracy.

Hydrogen Overvoltage Of Cadmium Bismuth And Antimony Bismuth Alloys, Edwin W. Stevens Oct 1944

Hydrogen Overvoltage Of Cadmium Bismuth And Antimony Bismuth Alloys, Edwin W. Stevens

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

A method to measure hydrogen overvoltage was developed and checked with metals of known overvoltage. Alloys of bismuth and antimony and of bismuth and cadmium were prepared and their overvoltages determined.

The Electrodeposition Of Copper-Cobalt Alloys, Richard L. Dunn

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

An attempt was made to deposit a 50:50 copper-cobalt alloy from various sulfate electrolytes. No true 50:50 alloy was obtained but various mixtures of cobalt and copper rich crystals were deposited.
