Interactive Graphics System For The Study Of Variance/Covariance Structures Of Bivariate And Multivariate Normal Populations, Ronald G. Garlicki Sep 1992

Interactive Graphics System For The Study Of Variance/Covariance Structures Of Bivariate And Multivariate Normal Populations, Ronald G. Garlicki

Theses and Dissertations

This research created a graphics oriented computer program which was used as part of a Visualization, Verbalization, Algorithization and Mathematization (VVAM) learning protocol. The curriculum for this research was the study of variance/covariance structures of bivariate and multivariate normal populations. The program displays the geometric images corresponding to the various possible covariance structures. These images facilitate and encourage experiment-based self discovery learning. The program encourages the student to take an active role in their own education. The program created is self contained, calculating all the statistical values it requires to create the various geometric images. The students have complete control …

The Development And Application Of Testing Techniques In An Object-Oriented Paradigm, Robert F. Kozal Apr 1992

The Development And Application Of Testing Techniques In An Object-Oriented Paradigm, Robert F. Kozal

Masters Theses

This thesis is the study of testing object-oriented programs. Aspects of object-oriented programs for which testing techniques are developed include classes, methods, inheritance, polymorphism, and encapsulation. The application of these techniques are illustrated, and a comparison between traditional testing techniques and object-oriented techniques is also drawn.

Doctoral Theses

The observation of a target by a device plaoed at some distance from it is cal.led remote sensing as ngainst in situ sensing where the sensor is kept in contact with the target. Usually physical emanations such as the electr omagnetic radiation from the target s observed by the sensing device. Sensors mounted on aircraft or satallite platforms measure the amount of energy reflected from or emitted by the earth's surface. Sensors scan the ground below a nd to either side of the satellite platform and as the platform noves forward, an image of the earths surface is formed.A satellite …

Fractal (Reconstructive Analogue) Memory, David J. Stucki, Jordan B. Pollack Jan 1992

Fractal (Reconstructive Analogue) Memory, David J. Stucki, Jordan B. Pollack

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

This paper proposes a new approach to mental imagery that has the potential for resolving an old debate. We show that the methods by which fractals emerge from dynamical systems provide a natural computational framework for the relationship between the “deep” representations of long-term visual memory and the “surface” representations of the visual array, a distinction which was proposed by (Kosslyn, 1980). The concept of an iterated function system (IFS) as a highly compressed representation for a complex topological set of points in a metric space (Barnsley, 1988) is embedded in a connectionist model for mental imagery tasks. Two advantages …

The A.D.E. Taxonomy Of Spreadsheet Application Development, Maria Jean Hall Jan 1992

The A.D.E. Taxonomy Of Spreadsheet Application Development, Maria Jean Hall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Spreadsheets are a major application in end-user computing, one of the fastest growing areas of computing. Studies have shown that 30% of spreadsheet applications contain errors. As major decisions are often made with the assistance of spreadsheets, the control of spreadsheet applications is a matter of concern to enduser developers, managers, EDP auditors and computer professionals.

The application of appropriate controls to the spreadsheet development process requires prior categorisation of the spreadsheet application. The special-purpose A.D.E. (Application, Development, Environment) taxonomy of spreadsheet application development was evolved by mathematical taxonomic methods to categorise spreadsheet development projects to facilitate their management and …

The Cognitive Status Of Risk: A Response To Thompson, L. James Valverde

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Discussing the role that probability theory should play in Risk analysis and management, Dr. Valverde argues that Thompson's approach puts too much emphasis on the distinction between Risk subjectivism and Risk objectivism in addressing the question, "When are Risks real?"

A Variable-Free Logic For Mass Terms, William C. Purdy Jun 1991

A Variable-Free Logic For Mass Terms, William C. Purdy

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

This paper presents a logic appropriate for mass terms, that is, a logic that does not presuppose interpretation in discrete models. Models may range from atomistic to atomless. This logic is a generalization of the author's work on natural language reasoning. The following claims are made for this logic. First, absence of variables makes it simpler than more conventional formalizations based on predicate logic. Second, capability to deal effectively with discrete terms, and in particular with singular terms, can be added to the logic, making it possible to reason about discrete entities and mass entities in a uniform manner. Third, …

On A Unique Tree Representation For P4-Extendible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu Jan 1991

On A Unique Tree Representation For P4-Extendible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Several practical applications in computer science and computational linguistics suggest the study of graphs that are unlikely to have more than a few induced paths of length three. These applications have motivated the notion of a cograph, defined by the very strong restriction that no vertex may belong to an induced path of length three. The class of P4-extendible graphs that we introduce in this paper relaxes this restriction, and in fact properly contains the class of cographs, while still featuring the remarkable property of admitting a unique tree representation. Just as in the case of cographs, the …

A Comparison Of Human-Computer Interfaces In Air Force Organizations, Michael G. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated differences in organizational efficiency and effectiveness for users of graphical user interfaces and text-based interfaces on personal computers in Air Forces offices. Areas of interest included amount of time required to learn the basic system, amount of time required to learn new application, users' ratings of user-friendliness, users' perceptions of the extent that their system help them perform in their job, the number of software packages used on the job by users of each system, user satisfaction, responsible authorities' ratings of quality of output, and the relationship between user job experience level and interface used on the …

Axiomatization Of Some Natural Quantifiers, William C. Purdy Nov 1990

Axiomatization Of Some Natural Quantifiers, William C. Purdy

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

This paper extends an existing logic, £n, to some of the generalized quantifiers of natural language. In contrast to the usual approach, this extension does not require the identity relation. Sommers has suggested that the identity is unnecessary in a logic that properly treats singular terms. This paper lends support to Sommers position. £n is a logic designed for natural language reasoning (see [3]). This paper defines an extension, LNQ, of that logic to include the cardinal quantifiers, at least n, and the second-order quantifier, most. Because of the limited expressiveness of first-order languages, a complete axiomatization for most is …
