A Study On Developing Novel Methods For Relation Extraction, Darshini Mahendran Jan 2022

A Study On Developing Novel Methods For Relation Extraction, Darshini Mahendran

Theses and Dissertations

Relation Extraction (RE) is a task of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to detect and classify the relations between two entities. Relation extraction in the biomedical and scientific literature domain is challenging as text can contain multiple pairs of entities in the same instance. During the course of this research, we developed an RE framework (RelEx), which consists of five main RE paradigms: rule-based, machine learning-based, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)-based, and Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs)-based approaches. RelEx's rule-based approach uses co-location information of the entities to determine whether a relation exists between a selected entity …

Temporal Disambiguation Of Relative Temporal Expressions In Clinical Texts Using Temporally Fine-Tuned Contextual Word Embeddings., Amy L. Olex Jan 2022

Temporal Disambiguation Of Relative Temporal Expressions In Clinical Texts Using Temporally Fine-Tuned Contextual Word Embeddings., Amy L. Olex

Theses and Dissertations

Temporal reasoning is the ability to extract and assimilate temporal information to reconstruct a series of events such that they can be reasoned over to answer questions involving time. Temporal reasoning in the clinical domain is challenging due to specialized medical terms and nomenclature, shorthand notation, fragmented text, a variety of writing styles used by different medical units, redundancy of information that has to be reconciled, and an increased number of temporal references as compared to general domain texts. Work in the area of clinical temporal reasoning has progressed, but the current state-of-the-art still has a ways to go before …

Incorporating Ontological Information In Biomedical Entity Linking Of Phrases In Clinical Text, Evan French Jan 2022

Incorporating Ontological Information In Biomedical Entity Linking Of Phrases In Clinical Text, Evan French

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical Entity Linking (BEL) is the task of mapping spans of text within biomedical documents to normalized, unique identifiers within an ontology. Translational application of BEL on clinical notes has enormous potential for augmenting discretely captured data in electronic health records, but the existing paradigm for evaluating BEL systems developed in academia is not well aligned with real-world use cases. In this work, we demonstrate a proof of concept for incorporating ontological similarity into the training and evaluation of BEL systems to begin to rectify this misalignment. This thesis has two primary components: 1) a comprehensive literature review and 2) …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In Turkey, Turkish Personal Data Protection Rule (PDPR) No. 6698, in force since 2016, provides protection to citizens for the legal existence of their personal data. Although the law provides excellent guidance, companies currently face challenges in complying with its regulations in terms of storing, sharing, or monitoring personal data. Since any specially designed software with wide industrial usage is not on the market, almost all of the companies have no other choice but to take expensive and error-prone operations manually to ensure their compliance. In this paper, we present an automated solution to facilitate and accelerate PDPR compliance. In …

Bias Mitigation For Toxicity Detection Via Sequential Decisions, Lu Cheng, Ahmadreza Mosallanezhad, Yasin N. Silva, Deborah Hall, Huan Liu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Increased social media use has contributed to the greater prevalence of abusive, rude, and offensive textual comments. Machine learning models have been developed to detect toxic comments online, yet these models tend to show biases against users with marginalized or minority identities (e.g., females and African Americans). Established research in debiasing toxicity classifiers often (1) takes a static or batch approach, assuming that all information is available and then making a one-time decision; and (2) uses a generic strategy to mitigate different biases (e.g., gender and racial biases) that assumes the biases are independent of one another. However, in real …

Assessing Inter-Metric Correlation For Multi-Document Summarization Evaluation, Michael Ridenour Jan 2022

Assessing Inter-Metric Correlation For Multi-Document Summarization Evaluation, Michael Ridenour

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

Background: (i) Automatic Text Summarization involves generating concise summaries of natural language text documents by using machine learning systems. (ii) Most prior research has focused on developing systems that can summarize a single document (for example a news article), but recent research has developed systems that can summarize a cluster of multiple documents (for example Tweets or customer reviews). (iii) Multi-document summarization is more challenging due to the higher diversity of information in the source documents.

Measuring Semantic Similarity Of Documents By Using Named Entity Recognition Methods, David Efraín Muñoz Morales Jan 2022

Measuring Semantic Similarity Of Documents By Using Named Entity Recognition Methods, David Efraín Muñoz Morales

Masters

The work presented in this thesis was born from the desire to map documents with similar semantic concepts between them. We decided to address this problem as a named entity recognition task, where we have identified key concepts in the texts we use, and we have categorized them. So, we can apply named entity recognition techniques and automatically recognize these key concepts inside other documents. However, we propose the use of a classification method based on the recognition of named entities or key phrases, where the method can detect similarities between key concepts of the texts to be analyzed, and …

Introduction Widespread problems of psychological distress have been observed in many countries following the outbreak of COVID-19, including Australia. What is lacking from current scholarship is a national-scale assessment that tracks the shifts in mental health during the pandemic timeline and across geographic contexts.

Methods Drawing on 244 406 geotagged tweets in Australia from 1 January 2020 to 31 May 2021, we employed machine learning and spatial mapping techniques to classify, measure and map changes in the Australian public’s mental health signals, and track their change across the different phases of the pandemic in eight Australian capital cities.

Results Australians’ …

Shapley Idioms: Analysing Bert Sentence Embeddings For General Idiom Token Identification, Vasudevan Nedumpozhimana, Filip Klubicka, John Kelleher

Articles

This article examines the basis of Natural Language Understanding of transformer based language models, such as BERT. It does this through a case study on idiom token classification. We use idiom token identification as a basis for our analysis because of the variety of information types that have previously been explored in the literature for this task, including: topic, lexical, and syntactic features. This variety of relevant information types means that the task of idiom token identification enables us to explore the forms of linguistic information that a BERT language model captures and encodes in its representations. The core of …

Estimating Fuel-Efficient Air Plane Trajectories Using Machine Learning, Jaiteg Singh, Gaurav Goyal, Farman Ali, Babar Shah, Sangheon Pack

All Works

Airline industry has witnessed a tremendous growth in the recent past. Percentage of people choosing air travel as first choice to commute is continuously increasing. Highly demanding and congested air routes are resulting in inadvertent delays, additional fuel consumption and high emission of greenhouse gases. Trajectory planning involves creation identification of cost-effective flight plans for optimal utilization of fuel and time. This situation warrants the need of an intelligent system for dynamic planning of optimized flight trajectories with least human intervention required. In this paper, an algorithm for dynamic planning of optimized flight trajectories has been proposed. The proposed algorithm …

Hashtag Recommendation Based On Neural Topic Model, Thunchanok Tangpong Jan 2022

Hashtag Recommendation Based On Neural Topic Model, Thunchanok Tangpong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Hashtag recommendation is a method that aims to recommend the relevant hashtag to the target microblog. The previous work applies a topic model for discovering the topic of users, words, and hashtags. Despite their progress, two problems remain unresolved. Firstly, the previous work infers topic distribution by using a non-neural network framework which is a non-linear function, limiting the model's ability to capture topic distribution complexly. Secondly, the representation of words and hashtags used in the prior model is merely the frequency of words, making the model to ignore not only word context but also the relation between word and …

Applied Environmental Research

The Thai government developed the “Bang Rakam Model 60” to solve flood issues in low-lying areas (Phitsanulok and Sukhothai Provinces). In the project, farmers will have to start planting in early April and harvest in July. This research proposes a methodology for assessing flood hazard using a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP) relied on Chang’s extent analysis. It was employed to derive the weight for factor ranking and create a flood hazard map. Eight hazard factors are considered in the methodology: average annual rainfall, drainage density, distance from drainage network, soil water infiltration, land use, elevation, slope, and flow …

In this work, we are concerned with developing cognitive representations that may en- hance the ability for self-supervised learning systems to learn language as part of their world explorations. We apply insights from in-depth language understanding systems to the problem, specifically representations which decompose language inputs into language-free structures that are complex combinations of primitives representing cognitive abstractions such as object permanence, movement, and spatial relationships. These decompositions, performed by a system traditionally called a conceptual analyzer, link words with complex non-linguistic structures that engender the rich relations between language expressions and world exploration that are a familiar aspect of …
