Hypergraphs With Attention On Reviews For Explainable Recommendation, Theis E. Jendal, Trung Hoang Le, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Matteo Lissandrini, Peter Dolog, Katja Hose

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a recommender system based on reviews, the challenges are how to effectively represent the review data and how to explain the produced recommendations. We propose a novel review-specific Hypergraph (HG) model, and further introduce a model-agnostic explainability module. The HG model captures high-order connections between users, items, aspects, and opinions while maintaining information about the review. The explainability module can use the HG model to explain a prediction generated by any model. We propose a path-restricted review-selection method biased by the user preference for item reviews and propose a novel explanation method based on a review graph. Experiments on …

Revisiting The Markov Property For Machine Translation, Cunxiao Du, Hao Zhou, Zhaopeng Tu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we re-examine the Markov property in the context of neural machine translation. We design a Markov Autoregressive Transformer (MAT) and undertake a comprehensive assessment of its performance across four WMT benchmarks. Our findings indicate that MAT with an order larger than 4 can generate translations with quality on par with that of conventional autoregressive transformers. In addition, counter-intuitively, we also find that the advantages of utilizing a higher-order MAT do not specifically contribute to the translation of longer sentences.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Since the advent of modern computing, researchers have striven to make the human–computer interface (HCI) as seamless as possible. Progress has been made on various fronts, e.g., the desktop metaphor (interface design) and natural language processing (input). One area receiving attention recently is voice activation and its corollary, computer-generated speech. Despite decades of research and development, most computer-generated voices remain easily identifiable as non-human. Prosody in speech has two primary components—intonation and rhythm—both often lacking in computer-generated voices. This research aims to enhance computer-generated text-to-speech algorithms by incorporating melodic and prosodic elements of human speech. This study explores a novel …

Using A Two-Way Engagement Community- And Family-Centered Pedagogy To Prepare Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers In A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Olga Ramirez, Mayra Ortiz Galarza, Luis M. Fernandez

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Research on effective methods to prepare pre-service teachers (PSTs) in teaching mathematics to K-12 Latin* students has been gaining significant momentum. These efforts have focused, in part, on promoting pedagogical practices that recognize and incorporate the culture and language that K-12 Latin* students and their communities share. As teacher educators, we argue that if we are to further prepare PSTs to serve the needs of such increasingly diversifying K-12 student population, the same pedagogical focus on the learner’s cultural wealth should also be applied to the preparation of PSTs themselves, especially among Latin* PSTs in Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) like …

M3sa: Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Based On Multi-Scale Feature Extraction And Multi-Task Learning, Changkai Lin, Hongju Cheng, Qiang Rao, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiment analysis plays an indispensable part in human-computer interaction. Multimodal sentiment analysis can overcome the shortcomings of unimodal sentiment analysis by fusing multimodal data. However, how to extracte improved feature representations and how to execute effective modality fusion are two crucial problems in multimodal sentiment analysis. Traditional work uses simple sub-models for feature extraction, and they ignore features of different scales and fuse different modalities of data equally, making it easier to incorporate extraneous information and affect analysis accuracy. In this paper, we propose a Multimodal Sentiment Analysis model based on Multi-scale feature extraction and Multi-task learning (M 3 SA). …

Delving Into Multimodal Prompting For Fine-Grained Visual Classification, Xin Jiang, Hao Tang, Junyao Gao, Xiaoyu Du, Shengfeng He, Zechao Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fine-grained visual classification (FGVC) involves categorizing fine subdivisions within a broader category, which poses challenges due to subtle inter-class discrepancies and large intra-class variations. However, prevailing approaches primarily focus on uni-modal visual concepts. Recent advancements in pre-trained vision-language models have demonstrated remarkable performance in various high-level vision tasks, yet the applicability of such models to FGVC tasks remains uncertain. In this paper, we aim to fully exploit the capabilities of cross-modal description to tackle FGVC tasks and propose a novel multimodal prompting solution, denoted as MP-FGVC, based on the contrastive language-image pertaining (CLIP) model. Our MP-FGVC comprises a multimodal prompts …

Mitigating Fine-Grained Hallucination By Fine-Tuning Large Vision-Language Models With Caption Rewrites, Lei Wang, Jiabang He, Shenshen Li, Ning Liu, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. To comprehend and execute diverse human instructions over image data, instruction-tuned large vision-language models (LVLMs) have been introduced. However, LVLMs may suffer from different types of object hallucinations. Nevertheless, LVLMs are evaluated for coarse-grained object hallucinations only (i.e., generated objects non-existent in the input image). The fine-grained object attributes and behaviors non-existent in the image may still be generated but not measured by the current evaluation methods. In this paper, we thus focus on reducing fine-grained hallucinations of LVLMs. We propose ReCaption, a framework that consists …

Reverse Multi-Choice Dialogue Commonsense Inference With Graph-Of-Thought, Li Zheng, Hao Fei, Fei Li, Bobo Li, Lizi Liao, Donghong Ji, Chong Teng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the proliferation of dialogic data across the Internet, the Dialogue Commonsense Multi-choice Question Answering (DC-MCQ) task has emerged as a response to the challenge of comprehending user queries and intentions. Although prevailing methodologies exhibit effectiveness in addressing single-choice questions, they encounter difficulties in handling multi-choice queries due to the heightened intricacy and informational density. In this paper, inspired by the human cognitive process of progressively excluding options, we propose a three-step Reverse Exclusion Graph-of-Thought (ReX-GoT) framework, including Option Exclusion, Error Analysis, and Combine Information. Specifically, our ReX-GoT mimics human reasoning by gradually excluding irrelevant options and learning the reasons …

Simple Image-Level Classification Improves Open-Vocabulary Object Detection, Ruohuan Fang, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai Feb 2024

Simple Image-Level Classification Improves Open-Vocabulary Object Detection, Ruohuan Fang, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Open-Vocabulary Object Detection (OVOD) aims to detect novel objects beyond a given set of base categories on which the detection model is trained. Recent OVOD methods focus on adapting the image-level pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs), such as CLIP, to a region-level object detection task via, eg., region-level knowledge distillation, regional prompt learning, or region-text pre-training, to expand the detection vocabulary. These methods have demonstrated remarkable performance in recognizing regional visual concepts, but they are weak in exploiting the VLMs' powerful global scene understanding ability learned from the billion-scale image-level text descriptions. This limits their capability in detecting hard objects of …

The Limits Of Data Science, David E. Drew Jan 2024

The Limits Of Data Science, David E. Drew

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Data science can contribute valuable predictions in diverse fields. But I write to express some concerns and red flags. I suggest that data science is being oversold. This article contains three questions that I believe data science must address as this new discipline matures. Is data science significantly different from statistics? This is a question that has haunted the field since the term first was introduced. By creating algorithms based on current societal decision rules that may be biased, even bigoted, does data science lock in and exacerbate inequality? Scholars have identified a continuum from data to information to knowledge …

To reduce the threats that wastewater poses to human health and the environment, water treatment techniques must be improved. The use of a procedure that includes preparation, testing, primary and secondary treatments, filtration, disinfection, and continuous monitoring is therefore required. The objective of this research is to create a hybrid notion that extends the idea of an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set (IVNFSS) to an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy set. Operations like complement, union, and integration are included in the idea. To improve decision-making accuracy, a quality-assessment distance measure is incorporated, offering a numerical representation of the disparity between various factors. …

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch Jan 2024

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in self-supervised learning have made it possible to reuse information-rich models that have been generally pre-trained on massive amounts of data for other downstream tasks. But the pre-training process can be drastically different from the fine-tuning training process, which can lead to inefficient learning. We address this disconnect in training dynamics by structuring the learning process like an open system in thermodynamics. Open systems can achieve a steady state when low-entropy inputs are converted to high-entropy outputs. We modify the the model and the learning process to mimic this behavior, and attend more to elements of the input …

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Brains do not reason as digital computers do. Computers reason in clear steps with statements that are either true or false, while humans reason with vague terms of common sense. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy and machine intelligence that deals with neutralities, specifically the idea of indeterminacy that is evident and experienced in our everyday lives. Indeterminacy is interpreted as everything that falls between a concept, idea, statement, declaration, etc. and its opposite. The fundamental thesis of neutrosophy is to employ neutrosophic logic, an extension of fuzzy logic, to incorporate fuzzy truth into complex schemes of formal reasoning. …

Web services (WSs) have become dynamic because of technological advancements and internet usage. Hence, selecting a WS provider among a variety of WS providers that perform the same function is a critical process. However, the crucial point is that various consumers may have varied needs when it comes to the quality attributes of services, such as cost, response time, throughput, security, availability, etc. These aspects of Web services are known as quality of service (QoS), or non-functional characteristics. Hence, this issue is the robust motivator for conducting this study. The objective of this study is to evaluate a set of …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

As a generalization of intuitionistic fuzzy sets, single-valued neutrosophic sets have certain advantages in solving indeterminate and inconsistent information. In this paper, we study the fuzzy inference full implication method based on single-valued neutrosophic t-representable t-norm. Firstly, single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy inference triple I principles for fuzzy modus ponens and fuzzy modus tollens are given. Then, single-valued neutrosophic R-type triple I solutions for FMP and FMT are given. Finally, the robustness of the full implication triple I method based on the left-continuous single-valued neutrosophic t-representable t-norm is investigated. As a special case of the main results, the sensitivity of full implication …
