The subjects used in this study were 5th-grade students of the researcher from Dan Ramirez Elementary. Each class or section of these students was randomly assigned as the control group (n = 20) and the experimental group (n =20). The subjects in the control group were exposed to traditional textbook reading while the subjects in the experimental group were exposed to flash animation. To measure the students' achievement from the concepts learned, a pre-test and a post test were both administered to …
Automatic Detection Of Child Pornography, Glen Thompson
Automatic Detection Of Child Pornography, Glen Thompson
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Before the introduction of the internet, the availability of child pornography was reported as on the decline (Jenkins 2001). Since its emergence, however, the internet has made child pornography a much more accessible and available means of trafficking across borders (Biegel 2001; Jenkins 2001; Wells, Finkelhor et al. 2007). The internet as it is at present is made up of a vast array of protocols and networks where traffickers can anonymously share large volumes of illegal material amongst each other from locations with relaxed or non-existent laws that prohibit the possession or trafficking of illegal material. Likewise the internet is …
Heterogeneity Effects In Plutonium Contaminated Soil, Orlando M. Chaparro
Heterogeneity Effects In Plutonium Contaminated Soil, Orlando M. Chaparro
Theses and Dissertations
In 1960 at the McGuire Air Force Base, New Egypt, New Jersey a helium tank ruptured causing a fire to ignite a nearby nuclear tipped Boeing Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (BOMARC) missile. During the fire the weapons grade plutonium (Pu- 239, Pu-240, and Pu-241) ignited and was released into the surrounding area, due to both firefighting efforts, where high pressure water was used to put out the fire, as well as smoke that deposited plutonium as oxidized particles in the surrounding area (Cicotte, 2007). This study investigates the heterogeneity of the distributed plutonium contamination in the McGuire Air Force Base …
Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng
Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng
Dissertations
Group decision making is essential in organizations. Group Support Systems (GSS) can aide groups in making decisions by providing tools and process support. GSS is especially useful for geographically or temporally distributed groups. Researchers of GSS have pointed out that convergence processes are hard to accomplish in GSS. Voting tools in GSS can be a valuable asset in alleviating the difficulty of convergence processes because voting is a concise communication of individual preferences with a well defined procedure that is accepted by group members. In addition, voting results can serve as a group memory of the convergence processes. Field observations …

We investigate the changing behaviors of myoglobin and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the near-absence of bulk water and/or protons by using ionic liquid butyl methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate as a non-aqueous milieu. Through direct charge transfer and metalloprotein-mediated catalytic reduction of oxygen and nitric oxide, we shed light on diverging aspects on how the two hemeproteins face the scarcity of water and/or protons in bulk. Isotopic effect investigations using D2O further elucidates kinetic aspects of proton transfer. Finally, in the case of NOS oxygenase, pterin cofactor binding and NOS-mediated catalytic oxidation of L-arginine in ionic liquids interrogates proton and water …

Congestion Mitigation In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Single-Hop Backpressure Algorithm, Vijay Shekar Mangilipalli Gangu Sham
Congestion Mitigation In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Single-Hop Backpressure Algorithm, Vijay Shekar Mangilipalli Gangu Sham
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wireless sensor networks consist of a group of small components with limited resources allocated to sense the environment and transmit data to the user or interpreter. This concept is technically evolved from Sensors that are basically used to sense the environment around and collect data based on the sensing application incorporated in them. An extension to functionality of the sensors leads to the concept of sensor networks, where, in addition to gathering information at individual sensors, the data is processed and transmitted to a central station or Base station. This concept of transmitting the information from one node to the …

Oxygenation Of The Root Zone And Tce Remediation: A Plant Model Of Rhizosphere Dynamics, Ian F. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes rhizosphere conditions that enhance the effective aerobic degradation of TCE in wetland bioremediation systems. A plant model was built using Stella 9.0 modeling software and uses numerical integration evaluation; it addresses movement of oxygen through plant vascular and aerenchymal systems, and into the rhizosphere where oxygen and other substrates influence bacteria. Methanotrophs and heterotrophs are assumed to be influential bacteria groups. Variations of humidity-induced-convection, methane, soil carbon, and copper concentrations are evaluated. Varying concentrations and hydraulic loadings of TCE are assessed with respect to TCE consumption rate and TCE treatment efficiency. Soil conditions most directly affected TCE …

Color Filter Array Image Analysis For Joint Denoising And Demosaicking, Keigo Hirakawa
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Noise is among the worst artifacts that affect the perceptual quality of the output from a digital camera. While cost-effective and popular, single-sensor solutions to camera architectures are not adept at noise suppression. In this scheme, data are typically obtained via a spatial subsampling procedure implemented as a color filter array (CFA), a physical construction whereby each pixel location measures the intensity of the light corresponding to only a single color. Aside from undersampling, observations made under noisy conditions typically deteriorate the estimates of the full-color image in the reconstruction process commonly referred to as demosaicking or CFA interpolation in …

Removal Of Selected Heavy Metals From Wash Water Generated From Ready-Mix Concrete Trucks, Dubai, Uae., Imad Juma Mohammed Abunqira
Theses
Dubai is one of seven Emirates that form the United Arab Emirates. The Emirate of Dubai is currently undergoing a fast-paced construction boom that involves huge amounts of concrete mixes. Such mixes are usually delivered to the site in ready form. The major environmental issue with ready-mix concrete production around the world is water pollution. The wash water generated from ready-mix concrete trucks is extremely alkaline and contains significant levels of heavy metals. Removal of heavy metals from the wash water is an environmental problem and economic concern. This demonstrates the urgent need for safe, feasible and economical methods for …
Effects Of An Inserted Endoscope On Chyme Movement In Small Intestine – A Theoretical Model, V. P. Srivastava
Effects Of An Inserted Endoscope On Chyme Movement In Small Intestine – A Theoretical Model, V. P. Srivastava
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The effects of an inserted endoscope on chyme movement in small intestine (gastrointestinal tract) have been investigated. The flow of chyme is induced by a progressive wave of area contraction along the length of intestinal wall under long wavelength approximation. It is found that the chyme movement is significantly influenced due to the presence of the endoscope. The pressure drop assumes lower values for higher values of the endoscope radius for small flow rates but the property reverses with increasing flow rates. The friction forces at intestinal wall and endoscope possess character similar to the pressure drop for any given …

The Use Of A Chiral Fluorescent Resorcinarene For The Enantiomeric Recognition Of Amino Acids, Gerald I. Richard
The Use Of A Chiral Fluorescent Resorcinarene For The Enantiomeric Recognition Of Amino Acids, Gerald I. Richard
LSU Master's Theses
The spectroscopic properties of a chiral boronic acid based resorcinarene macrocycle employed for chiral analysis were investigated. Specifically, the emission and excitation characteristics of tetraarylboronate resorcinarene macrocycle (TBRM) and its quantum yield were evaluated. The chiral selector TBRM was investigated as a chiral reagent for the enantiomeric discrimination of amino acids using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Chiral recognition of amino acids in the presence of the macrocycle was based on diastereomeric complexes. Results demonstrated that TBRM had better chiral discrimination ability for lysine as compared to the other amino acids. Partial-least-squares regression modeling (PLS-1) of spectral data for macrocycle-lysine host-guest complexes …
Studies On Cyclooxygenase-1, Its Structure And Splice Variants, And Modulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 By Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And Novel Phytochemicals., Yibing Xu
Theses and Dissertations
Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are of important therapeutic value as they are the target site of aspirin-like drugs. Here I report nine new COX-1 splice variants in chapter 1, which I characterized with regard to heme-binding and other properties. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are co-inducible in many tissues following mitogenic and proinflammatory stimulation. In chapter 2, I investigate the physical and enzymatic properties of human COX-2 and iNOS and demonstrate that, despite reports to the contrary by another laboratory, they do not interact. The only reported COX-1 splice variant to exhibit cyclooxygenase activity has been isolated from …

The synthesis, structure, and anion binding properties of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4] pyrroles (OMCPs) and their N-confused octamethylcalix[4] pyrrole isomers (NC-OMCPs) containing an inverted pyrrole ring connected via alpha'- and beta-positions are described. X-ray diffraction analyses proved the structures of two synthesized isomeric pairs of OMCPs and NC-OMCPs. The addition of anions to solutions of chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs resulted in different colors suggesting different anion-binding behaviors. The chromogenic NC-OMCPs showed significantly stronger anion-induced color changes compared to the corresponding chromogenic OMCP, and the absorption spectroscopy titrations indicated that chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs also possess different anion binding selectivity. Detailed NMR studies …

Red And Black Tides: Quantitative Analysis Of Water-Leaving Radiance And Perceived Color For Phytoplankton, Colored Dissolved Organic Matter, And Suspended Sediments, Heidi M. Dierssen, Raphael M. Kudela, John P. Ryan, Richard C. Zimmerman
OES Faculty Publications
Using field measurements and quantitative modeling, we demonstrate that red coloration of the sea surface is not associated with any particular group of phytoplankton and is strongly dependent on the physiology of the human visual system. Red or brown surface waters can be produced by high concentrations of most types of algae, colored dissolved organic matter, or suspended sediment. Even though light reflected by red tides commonly peaks in the yellow spectral region (570–580 nm), human color perception requires consideration of the entire spectrum of light relative to receptors within the human eye. The color shift from green to red …
Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We present a simple, two- or three-step method for the synthesis of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole-based (OMCP) sensors for anions. Electrophilic aromatic substitution allows for converting the pyrrole moieties of OMCP into a dye. The formation of a sensor-anion complex results in partial charge transfer and a dramatic change in color. The absorption (UV-vis) and NMR titration experiments show that the chromogenic OMCPs sense anions administered as aqueous solutions, even at high ionic strength ( approximately 0.1 M NaCl), while displaying selectivity for pyrophosphate and carboxylate anions. The experiments with polyurethane sensor films show a strong response for aqueous carboxylates, such as …
An Investigation Into Palladium-Catalyzed Reduction Of Perchlorate In Water, Eric G. Barney
An Investigation Into Palladium-Catalyzed Reduction Of Perchlorate In Water, Eric G. Barney
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, application of a catalytic reactor to facilitate chemical reduction of perchlorate was investigated. Palladium-coated pellets were used as the catalyst, and formic acid was used as the reductant. Reactor performance was evaluated under a variety of operating conditions (influent pH, reductant concentration, residence time). Very little perchlorate reduction was observed under any operating condition. At best, approximately 8% perchlorate reduction was observed. This small reduction efficiency is clearly not sufficient for environmental treatment applications. Perchlorate strongly adsorbed to the catalyst at low pH (3 - 3.3). At higher pH (4 - 10), little adsorption was observed. This …

The Effects Of Computerized Smell Of Memory, Brandon Spencer
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
It has long been recognized that there is a major correlation between smell and memory. Until recently, commercialized multi-sensory experiences involving olfaction were limited to non-computerized mediums. Companies that manufacture computerized scent technologies tout the educational benefits of their product, yet prior to this study, there appeared to be no scholarly research in regard to the efficacy of computerized scent producing peripherals in educational environments. The aim of this research was to determine the odor memory enhancement benefits of incorporating olfactory, computerized peripherals into computerized multimedia-learning environments, from both a context dependent and context independent stand point. Specifically, within a …

Energy Aware Topology Control Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks, Shilpa Dhar
LSU Master's Theses
Wireless Sensor Network has emerged as an important technology of the future due to its potential for application across a wide array of domains. The collaborative power of numerous autonomousremote sensing nodes self configured into a multi hop network permits in-depth accurate observation of any physical phenomenon. A stringent set of computational and resource constraints make the design and implementation of sensor networks an arduous task. The issue of optimizing the limited and often non-renewable energy of sensor nodes due to its direct impact on network lifetime dominates every aspect of wireless sensor networks. Existing techniques for optimizing energy consumption …

An Analysis Of Cardiovascular And Respiratory Mortality As A Function Of Ambient Ozone And Fine Particulate Matter In The Baton Rouge Air Quality Control Region, Thomas James Wiley Iv
LSU Master's Theses
The Baton Rouge Air Quality Control Region has come under fire due to difficulties in reaching attainment of one-hour daily ozone limitations and its general perception as being a polluted place to live. Ozone is a reactive oxygen species which has been shown to result in damage to biological molecules and is detrimental to human physiology, especially in regards to cardio-respiratory structure and function. In the last decade, fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in mean aerodynamic diameter have been identified as a possible pollutant that is affecting public health at levels lower than the EPA’s established limits. PM2.5 …

The Natural Role Of Mathematics In The Sciences: How Maharishi's Vedic Science Answers The Question Of The Unreasonable Effectiveness Of Mathematics In The Sciences, Catherine A. Gorini
Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal
Mathematicians and scientists have for a long time tried to understand why mathematics, a subjective creation of the human intellect, is so effective in the sciences, which study the objective, physical world. Satisfactory reasons have not been found because there has not been a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the subjective and the objective aspects of life. In this paper we will see that Maharishi’s Vedic Science, by explaining the link between the subjective realm where mathematics is located and the objective world that science examines, can resolve this problem in a natural way.

Evaluation Of The Enantiomeric Composition Of Amino Acids In Tobacco, John P. Kullman, Xianghong Chen, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite the fact that several studies have reported the concentrations of various free amino acids in tobacco, their enantiomeric composition is unknown. Both the absolute and enantiomeric compositions of proline, alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, valine, methionine, leucine, and phenylalanine were determined for three strains of tobacco leaf, three types of smokeless tobacco, and six different blended filtered and nonfiltered reference cigarettes. Some of the highest levels of D-amino acids ever found in agricultural products were observed. Possible mechanisms for the production of these D-amino acids are considered. The relevance of D-amino acids in tobacco is discussed.
