The Relationship Of Bird Habitats To Disease Producing Fungi, Robert Weeks
The Relationship Of Bird Habitats To Disease Producing Fungi, Robert Weeks
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Two fungi, Cryptococcous neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum, which are pathogenic to some animals and humans, are found in association with the habitats of birds. This association will be discussed by a review of Cryptococcosis and C. neoformans in association with pigeons and their habitats, reviewing histoplasmosis and relating the experience of the Soil Ecology Unit Mycoses Section in Kansas City with H. capsulatum associated with blackbird and starling roosts during the past nine months of this year.
A Municipal Bird Control Project, James Steckel
A Municipal Bird Control Project, James Steckel
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The subject I was asked to talk about this morning is Municipal Bird Control. Our organization was asked approximately a year ago by a rather high level income urban municipality lying adjacent to Columbus, Ohio, a bedroom community so to speak, to come into their area to do a commercial bird control project. The problem species was pigeons. The community was having a blight. Real estate sales in the town had dropped off as a result of the pigeon problem. The taxpayers were getting together and had been harassing the council for about six months to do something about the …
Outlook For Ornitrol, M. R. Woulfe
Outlook For Ornitrol, M. R. Woulfe
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
My comments at this point will concern the application and uses of Ornitrol. My comments are aimed at people who are engaged in actual control work, people in public health departments and PCO's.
Ornitrol is a chemosterilant--one of the first ones which has been registered for sale. It inhibits egg production apparently in most avians. We know it does this in pigeons, sparrows, grackles, blackbirds, and chickens. It is reasonable to assume that it will do this in many other species, and this generalized action is one of the reasons why it has got to be handled very carefully where …
Registration Patterns For Avicides, James O. Lee
Registration Patterns For Avicides, James O. Lee
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Federal legislation relating to pesticide use in the United States dates back to 1910 with passage of the Federal Insecticide Act. This consumer protection from sub¬standard or fraudulent products was considered sufficient for the next 37 years.
In 1947, Congress passed the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. The FIFRA superseded the earlier legislation and was designed as a regulatory measure. Under the Act any product considered an "economic poison" must be reg¬istered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture before it may be marketed in inter¬state commerce.
The FIFRA defines an economic poison as any substance or mixture of sub¬stances …
Selling Bird Control, Jerry Keown
Selling Bird Control, Jerry Keown
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The remarks that I have prepared deal with direct contacts selling pest and bird control programs. I am going to limit my remarks to what I feel are the more important aspects of selling Bird Control. I think it is safe to say that one of the most difficult aspects of selling for most sales personnel is prospecting, that is, finding accounts to call on. Our sales personnel have to more or less come up with their own leads. They have to find out who to contact once they get there. I have found that the best prospect most of …

Pesticide Residues In Channel Catfish From Nebraska, N. P. Stucky
Pesticide Residues In Channel Catfish From Nebraska, N. P. Stucky
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were collected in all of the major watersheds in Nebraska during the summer of 1964. Individual fat samples and composite blood samples obtained from these fish were analyzed to determine the concentrations of residues of DDT and its metabolites (o,p'DDT, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD, and DDE) and dieldrin. A total of 178 fish, collected from 18 sites, were analyzed. As expected, the fat samples contained higher concentrations of the pesticides than did the blood samples. DDT residues were found in all fat samples, and average levels from 10 fish sampled at each site ranged from a …

X-Ray Induced Luminescence Of Sapphire And Ruby, Ivan Collier Jr.
X-Ray Induced Luminescence Of Sapphire And Ruby, Ivan Collier Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Over the past decade the luminescence properties of sapphire (∝-AL2O3) and ruby (Al2O3:Cr2O3) have been the subject of many investigations because of their importance in materials technology. Sapphire and ruby are at present used as lasing materials, radiation dosimeters, and as optical windows. In order that these operations may be made more efficient, and that other useful luminescent properties may be systematically explored and developed, much attention has been given to understanding the luminescent mechanisms from the standpoint of the physics of the solid state. However, mechanisms have …

The Effects Of Various Treatments On Thiamin Diphosphate And Total Thiamin Levels Of Rat Tissues, Dong Hwa Park
Theses and Dissertations
Tissue thiamin diphosphate was assayed enzymatically utilizing purified brewer's yeast apotransketolase. With this assay ten uumoles of thiamin diphosphate could be detected. Total thiamin was fluorometrically measured. For one to three days rats were placed under conditions of stress, consisting of loud noise treatment, emotional stress, deprivation of paradoxical sleep, and swimming to exhaustion, respectively. The body weight was markedly decreased at the end of the respective experimental periods except with the loud noise treated group, compared with the corresponding controls. Following two to three such consecutive treatments, the adrenal weight also showed a significant increase. Thiamin diphosphate and total …

The Synthesis And Properties Of New Potentially Chemotheraputic [Sic] Pteridine Derivatives, Walter Wesley Parish
The Synthesis And Properties Of New Potentially Chemotheraputic [Sic] Pteridine Derivatives, Walter Wesley Parish
Theses and Dissertations
A new general synthetic method for the preparation of 6-thiopteridines has been developed. The method involves the addition of thiols to intermediate pyrimidine nitrones formed in situ by the reaction of 4-amino-5-nitrosopyrimidines with pyridinium-activated acetonitriles, acetates, acetophenones, and other methylketones. Ca. forty new pteridines were prepared by this method. The preparation of six new 6-pteridinyl ketones, two new 6- pteridinyl ketone thiosemicarbazones, and two new 6-sulfonylpteridines and their 4-acetamido derivatives is also reported. 4-Acetamido-2- amino-7-phenylpteridine 5-oxide was prepared by the reaction of 2- amino-4,6-diacetamido-5-nitrosopyrimidine with either phenylsulfonyl-acetophenone or phenacylpyridinium bromide. Evidence relating to the structure of the acylated 4-amino-5- nitrosopyrimidines …
An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …
Planning Aspects Of Pollution Control, Donald T. Cannell
Planning Aspects Of Pollution Control, Donald T. Cannell
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Pollution control and abatement has become a national social goal but improvement impeded by lack of adequate resource allocation. The uncertainties of technology, financing, nature, politics, law and institutionalism must be evaluated by corporate and government planners to find long-run solutions. The evaluation of the sensitivity of planning recommendations to the uncertainty involved in this multi-variate problem, along with national economic shifts caused by alternative abatement funding programs is critical in formulating the “best” plan to ensure success of the national program.

The Photochemical Reduction Of Octacyanomolybdate(V) Ion In Aqueous Solutions, Gordon W. Gray
The Photochemical Reduction Of Octacyanomolybdate(V) Ion In Aqueous Solutions, Gordon W. Gray
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The photochemical reactions occurring in aqueous solutions of octacyanomolybdate(V) ion, Mo(CN)83-, during irradiation with light of 365 and 436 nm wavelengths were studied. The quantum yields and reaction products were determined for neutral, unbuffered solutions as well as solutions buffered at pH 4.0, 7.0, and 9.0.
The results of these studies showed that the Mo(CN)83- ion is rapidly reduced by light to a Mo(IV) complex. In neutral or acidic media, the initial photoreduction product was found to be the red heptacyanoaquomolybdate(IV) ion, Mo(CN)7(H2O)3-. Photolysis in basic solution gave the …
Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Thermal Requirements To Protect Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Water temperatures affect aquatic organisms in a number of ways, both directly and indirectly. Some of the latter effects are quite subtle. High temperatures can have direct lethal effects but sublethal levels operating over long periods can be just as harmful through delayed lethal effects and the production of nonlethal stresses which eventually result in changes in the population, reduced growth or reproduction, and the lowering of resistance to parasites, dis ease, and competitors. Temperature, in combination with certain other factors such as day length, influences re producing processes. High water temperatures may stimulate or retard migration, spawning, feeding, and …

A Study To Demonstrate The Immediate Destination Of An Embolus Formed In The Lumen Of A Peripheral Venous Catheter, Rosemarie Morikone Emori
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to show the immediate destination of an embolus formed in the lumen of an intravenous catheter placed in a peripheral vessel. The hypothesis stated that clots injected into a peripheral vessel will lodge in the lungs. A subhypothesis was that the clot may lodge anywhere along the circulatory pathway.
Indications of need for the study as shown by the review of literature were the following: (1) the complications resulting from the frequent use of intravenous polyethylene catheters, (2) experimental studies that showed that clots were formed around intravenous catheters, (3) the evidence that intravenous catheters predispose …
