Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived E-Working Experience And Autonomy In It Professionals, Sherry Hunt
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
As remote work reshapes the professional landscape, understanding how e-working conditions influence the need for autonomy, a core component of motivation and well-being, is increasingly important. This quantitative, correlational study explored the relationship between perceived e-working experience and the psychological need for autonomy among 120 U.S.-based information technology (IT) professionals. Participants completed an online survey comprised of the E-Work Life (EWL) Scale (Charalampous et al., 2023; Grant et al., 2019) and two autonomy subscales from the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Work Scale (BPNSFWS) (Olafsen et al., 2021). Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT) (Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2017, 2020) …

Background: Accurate and portable diagnostic tools for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) remain a critical unmet need in clinical practice. Electroencephalography (EEG), with its noninvasiveness and high sensitivity, presents an ideal modality, yet traditional multi-channel EEG systems limit clinical convenience and practical deployment. Methods: We developed a novel CNN-Transformer hybrid model using only eight EEG channels selected from frontal regions to detect MDD. Minimal preprocessing steps (basic filtering) were applied to EEG data before the model automatically learned both local and global signal features through convolutional and self-attention mechanisms. We validated this method through comprehensive experiments, including within-dataset and cross-dataset evaluations, …

Observing The Dynamics: Black Labour And Cultural Taxation, Kay Coates
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Associatively, the Dynamic Social Impact theory (DSIT) can effectively demonstrate the convergence of labor, culture and service in connection with Black labor and cultural taxation within the productivity sector. One of the four patterns identified in DSIT indicates that minority groups within a larger culture can be found to be both isolated and vibrant. This isolation allows minority influence to persist. To such an extent that certain marginalized, underrepresented people in the productivity field often face underlying stressors that disproportionately affect their health and overall well-being. This lightning round presentation takes an appreciative enquiry perspective to promote the development of …

Industries, Self-Rated Health, And Status Characteristics: An Exploration Of Health In Industries At The Intersection Of Race/Ethnicity, Gender, And Disability, Emmanuel Legarreta
Dissertations and Theses
While industries, occupations, and health outcomes have been widely studied, research has neglected self-rated health (SRH) and the intersectionality of different status characteristics in various industries. Using an IPUMS version of the Current Population Survey, this study explores the possible relationships between industries and SRH. More specifically, it seeks to find if workers' disability status, racial minority status, or gender moderates (i.e., differentiates) the relationship between their industry and SRH. Findings show that certain industries are significant predictors of SRH, and that women with disabilities working in Mining and Construction, and Business and Repair Service have significantly worse SRH than …

Face Off: Evaluating Virtual Human Expressions And Non-Tracking Control Methods In Vr, J K Sangeeth Chandran, Marisa Llorens Salvador, Cathy Ennis
Conference papers
Social virtual reality (VR) applications have become more ubiquitous in recent years; central to this is the communication pipeline, how users perceive virtual human facial expressions, and how they control them in real time, especially when using VR devices without face-tracking. We investigated both aspects in a set of experiments. Firstly, we compared the perception of virtual human emotions on a traditional 2D screen and in VR. In a second experiment, we used a validated set of stimuli to compare three different control methods for manipulating an avatar’s facial expressions in VR. These control methods utilize non-tracking control techniques, which …

Spatial technologies examining the cell and tissue microenvironment at near single-cell resolution are revealing important molecular insights. However, few tools enable integrated, interactive analysis of spatial-omics with tissue morphology in the same functional tissue unit. Here, we present FUSION (Functional Unit State Identification in Whole Slide Images), a web-based platform for visualizing and analyzing spatial-omics data with high-resolution histology. FUSION provides workflows for assessing cell compositions, quantitative morphometrics, and comparative tissue analyses. We demonstrate applicability across spatial assays, including 10x Visium, Visium HD, 10x Xenium, Cell DIVE, and PhenoCycler, applied to healthy and diseased tissues from kidney, small intestine, lung, …

Antibiotic resistance is a threat to human health, yet recent work highlights how loss of resistance may drive pathogenesis in some bacteria. In two recent studies, we found that β-lactam antibiotics and nutrient stresses faced during infection selected for genetic inactivation of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa antibiotic efflux pump mexEFoprN. Unexpectedly, efflux pump mutations increased P. aeruginosa virulence during infection; however, neither the prevalence of mexEFoprN inactivating mutations in real human infections, nor the mechanisms driving increased virulence of efflux pump mutants are known. We hypothesized that human infection would select for virulence enhancing mutations. Using genome sequencing of clinical isolates, …

This study investigates the feasibility of using tear sample analysis, based on protein corona formation on gold nanoparticles combined with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and machine learning techniques, as a non-invasive approach for the detection of choroidal melanoma. The aim is to assess whether protein-nanoparticle interactions can support early and reliable identification of this ocular condition. Tear samples were collected using Schirmer strips from six healthy individuals and six patients diagnosed with choroidal melanoma, with subsequent augmentation to 18 samples per group. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, ~ 20 nm) were synthesized via citrate reduction and incubated with tear samples to …
