Methiocarb-Treated Rice Seed Applied After Field Draining Fails To Repel Blackbirds From Sprouting Rice, N.R. Holler, P.W. Lefebvre, R.E. Matteson, G.R. Gunknecht, R.A. Dolbeer
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)
Blackbirds, primarily Agelaius phoeniceus, cause extensive losses to sprouting rice in southwestern Louisiana. Methiocarb applied to seed prior to planting at rates above 1.0 g a.i./kg rice (0.1%) has provided excellent protection to sprouting rice in Louisiana under conditions of high bird pressure. To reduce treatment costs, some farmers have used over-flights of methiocarbtreated seed applied at low rates to part of the field after draining. This study showed this technique was not efficacious under conditions of high bird pressure. Four fields treated in this manner suffered 98% loss of sprouts compared to 100% loss in four untreated fields. Large …

State Of The Fisheries Report 1986, Fisheries Department Of Western Australia
Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
Western Australia continues to be one of the leading fishing States in Australia. The total gross value of fish, crustaceans and molluscs for 1985/86 was $139 million (Table 1) to which may be added the value of the pearl culture industry resulting in a total value of approximately $180 million.

Environmental Assessment Of Remedial Action At The Mexican Hat Uranium Mill Tailings Site, Mexican Hat, Utah, U.S. Department Of Energy
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This document assesses the environmental impacts of the proposed remedial action at the Mexican Hat uranium mill tailings site located on the Navajo Reservation in southern Utah. The site covers 235 acres and contains 69 acres of tailings and several of the original mill structures. The Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) of 1978, Public Law 95-604 (PL95-604), authorized the U.S. Department of Energy to clean up the site to reduce the potential health impacts associated with the residual radioactive materials remaining at the site. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency promulgated standards for the remedial action (40 CFR Part …

Effects Of A Dispersed And Undispersed Crude Oil On Mangroves, Seagrasses And Corals, T. G. Ballou, Richard E. Dodge, S. C. Hess, A. H. Knap, Thomas D. Sleeter
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel
Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel
Publications (WR)
Critical thermal maxima (CTM) and thermal preferenda of the common fishes of the Virgin River were examined. Differences in final temperature preferenda and CTM for species with low thermal lability (speckled dace, spinedace, roundtail chub) correspond well with differences in their distribution and abundance in the river. These species shifted their acute thermal preferences relatively little as acclimation temperature increased. For thermally labile species (woundfin, red shiner, desert sucker, and fiannehnouth sucker), the final preferendum is a less precise indicator of probable distribution. The woundfin, an endangered fish, has a high CTM (39.5 C at 25 C acclimation) and a …
Investigation Of Complex Formation By Oligomers Of Cytosine And Guanosine, Steven Roberts Davis
Investigation Of Complex Formation By Oligomers Of Cytosine And Guanosine, Steven Roberts Davis
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Duplex formation between oligo(C:G) n where n=3 to 4 was shown not to occur under conditions favorable for duplex formation between poly G and poly C. Instead, a stable guano sine self-structure was found to form which a Tm of 50°C for (Gp)3 and 80°C for (Gp)4 at strand concentrations of 10-5M in 1M NaCl. Neither a duplex nor a self-structure formed in the absence of salt.
Oligomers of guanosine and cytosine were obtained by basic hydrolysis and separated according to chain length using DEAE Sephadex column chromatography. Separation of cytosine oligomers with chain lengths …
Determination Of Netropsin-Dna Binding Constants From Footprinting Data, Brian Ward, Robert Rehfuss, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak
Determination Of Netropsin-Dna Binding Constants From Footprinting Data, Brian Ward, Robert Rehfuss, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak
Chemistry - All Scholarship
A theory for deriving drug-DNA site binding constants from footprinting data is presented. Plots of oligonucleotide concentration, as a function of drug concentration, for various cutting positions on DNA are required. It is assumed that the rate of cleavage at each nucleotide position is proportional to the concentration of enzyme at that nucleotide and to the probability that the nucleotide is not blocked by drug. The probability of a nucleotide position not being blocked is calculated by assuming a conventional binding equilibrium for each binding site with exclusions for overlapping sites. The theory has been used to evaluate individual site …

Proceedings of the Sino-American Conference on Environmental Law (August 16)
On August 16 through 18, 1987 a delegation of 10 Americans met with a 14-member Chinese delegation to compare the systems of environmental law in the two countries. The meetings were held on and near the campus of the University of Peking in Beijing, People's Republic of China. This program was the fruition of nearly three years of discussion, planning, and organization involving Dean Betsy Levin and the Natural Resources Law Center.
The keynote speaker was Qu Geping, Director of the Chinese National Environmental Protection Bureau (comparable to the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). He spoke of the …
