An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey
An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.
New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed. The impact of these regulations on product development is unclear. Hopefully a dialogue will develop among industry, government agencies, and the public such that reasonable and appropriate …
Ab Initio Investigation Of Several Low-Lying States Of All-Trans Octatetraene, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson
Ab Initio Investigation Of Several Low-Lying States Of All-Trans Octatetraene, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The results of ab initio calculations that examine vertical and nonvertical transitions to several low-lying states of all-trans-octatetraene are presented. It is found that the lowest vertical excitation is to a valence π → π* ¹B_u state, and the nominally doubly excited 2¹A_g state occurs approximately 0.4 eV higher at the geometry of the ground state. Using estimated excited-state equilibrium geometries, we find that the 2¹A_g state is indeed the lowest singlet excited state, having a 0-0 tarnsition energy of 4.15 eV. The 0-0 transition energy for the 1¹B_u state is calculated to be 4.56 eV. The present results …
Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …
Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer
Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The potential economic impact of biotechnology in production agriculture is discussed. There are challenges and difficulties in completing economic research when little production information is available on biotechnologies. I argue that little impact differences exist between cost-reducing versus output-increasing technological change. Rapid technological change results in low average returns in agriculture but continuous early innovators earn higher returns. Various plant and animal technologies are presented and discussed.
Benthic Macroinvertebrate Habitat Associations Of The Channelized Middle Missouri River, James B. Barnum, Roger W. Bachmann
Benthic Macroinvertebrate Habitat Associations Of The Channelized Middle Missouri River, James B. Barnum, Roger W. Bachmann
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Benthic macroinvertebrates associated with navigation structures (dikes, dike pools, revetted banks) and abandoned channels on the Missouri River at the Iowa-Nebraska border were sampled in June, August, and October 1983 to determine the invertebrate community structure of these habitats. Invertebrate densities were greatest in the abandoned channel habitat (to over 13,000/m2), while diversities were greatest in the dike and revetment habitats. Greater habitat diversity contributed to greater organism diversity in the dike and revetment habitats while sediment homogeneity and stability presumably contributed to greater organism densities in the abandoned channel habitat. Dike pools had turbulent eddy currents, which …

Recompact Iowa Soil Materials Before Using As Liners For Waste Containment, G. J. Kluitenberg, R. Horton, M. L. Thompson, J. F. Mcbride
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Soil materials are often used in hazardous-waste disposal facilities to provide a physical barrier to leachate movement. Both existing soils and recompacted soil materials have been used in barrier construction. Solute transport experiments and measurements of saturated hydraulic conductivity were used to characterize the solute transport properties of three Iowa soil materials. Experiments were carried out by using undisturbed soil samples as well as recompacted samples. The experimental results show that recompaction greatly altered the solute transport properties of the three soil materials. It is concluded that recompaction is necessary for any of these materials to satisfy Environmental Protection Agency …
Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith
Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Avian Cholera (Pateurella multocida) has infected and killed thousands of migrating waterfowl each year since 1975 in Nebraska’s rainwater basin area. Disease outbreaks in migrating waterfowl populations just prior to the nesting season are of concern to biologists. Feedlots and itner-wetland basin surface water transfer mechanisms of the avian cholera causative agent, P. multocida, were investigated using remote sensing techniques. Wetland basin characteristics (classification type, adjacent landuse, basin landuse, and basin densities) were also investigated for relationships to 1981 avian cholera outbreaks. No surface drainage relationships were found that would permit the transfer of P. multocida from one wetland basin …

Roles Of A 67-Kda Polypeptide In Reversal Of Protein Synthesis Inhibition In Heme-Deficient Reticulocyte Lysate, Bansidhar Datta, Debopam Chakrabarti, Ananda L. Roy, Naba K. Gupta
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, the heme-regulated protein synthesis inhibitor, HRI, phosphorylates the a subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2) and thus inhibits protein synthesis. Two factors, eIF-2 and a reticulocyte-lysate supernatant factor that we term RF, reverse this inhibition. We now report the following. (i) An active eIF-2 preparation contained, in addition to the three subunits (α,β, and γ), a 67-kDa polypeptide. Pretreatment of eIF-2 with polyclonal antibodies against either isolated a subunit or 67-kDa polypeptide almost completely inhibited the reversal activity. Upon further fractionation, three-subunit eIF-2 and the 67-kDa polypeptide were resolved. Neither the …

Production Effects Of Biotechnology In The Dairy Industry: An Exploratory Study, Kenneth L. Schurter
Production Effects Of Biotechnology In The Dairy Industry: An Exploratory Study, Kenneth L. Schurter
Theses
Genetically engineered products are being produced at an economical level. products is bovine sornatotropin. One of these Injections of bovine sornatotropin increase milk yield in dairy cattle. This increase in production per cow is consistent with the thirty year trend of fewer dairy farms, fewer cows, and more milk per cow.
Starting in the 1950's in the mechanical era, farmers went from horses to tractors. In the chemical era, herbicides and fertilizers started being used. Now in the 1980's the technical era is coming in to existence . Through all of these era's there was controversy. Each of these era's …
Hydrogeology Of The Hillsboro Landfill, Hillsboro, North Dakota, Jeffrey D. Maletzke
Hydrogeology Of The Hillsboro Landfill, Hillsboro, North Dakota, Jeffrey D. Maletzke
Theses and Dissertations
Landfills are the primary means for land disposal of solid wastes, and as such, they represent potential sources of groundwater contamination. This potential for contamination is exemplified by the Hillsboro landfill, which was emplaced above the Hillsboro aquifer, within permeable surface materials, and under shallow water-table conditions. Burial of refuse in trenches 15-feet (4.57 m) deep ensure that at least portions of the refuse are below the water table, which varied from 5.4 to 13.2 feet (1.7 to 4.0 m) below the surface. Concern over these factors led to the present study.
Subsurface conditions were investigated by electrical, earth-resistivity surveying. …
Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett
Arkansas' Timber Resource: Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow, Richard A. Kluender, R. L. Willett
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Demand for forest products continues to rise. Arkansas provides about 4% of the U.S. total forest production and about 12% of the south central region production. Questions exist about the ability of current forest resources to completely meet anticipated future demand. In 1985, the U.S. Forest Service and the Arkansas Timber Study Committee began to analyze the existing forest base to determine whether future demand could be met from the current forest, or if not, what management changes were needed to help meet future demand. In 1985, Arkansas forests covered approximately 48% of the total land area of the state. …

Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Fossil Fuel Consumption A Canadian Perspective, John Peter Doucet
Carbon Dioxide Emissions And Fossil Fuel Consumption A Canadian Perspective, John Peter Doucet
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The potential climate change due to increased loading of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has emerged as one of the most significant environmental threats of the late twentieth century. An analysis of a variety of feasible energy demand scenarios for Canada indicates that if we continue to consume the same types and proportions of fuels as we do today, the expected demand for energy in the year 2005 would yield carbon dioxide emissions up to 52.5 per cent greater than that of 1985. On the other hand, if Canada were to alter the types and quantities of fuels required to …

Changes In The Morphometry Of Las Vegas Wash And The Impact On Water Quality, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries stormwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from two sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. Over 80 percent of the normal discharge of approximately 3.4 m3/s (120 ft3/s) consists of effluent from the City of Las Vegas and Clark County sewage treatment plants. Beginning in the 1950s, a large wetland area developed along the wash that supported waterfowl populations and contributed to some water quality transformations. Heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the area in 1983 and 1984 resulted in erosion and channelization that greatly …
Ion-Association Complexes Of Thallium And Mercury With Rhodamine 6g In Aqueous Solution, Nasrein El-Masri
Ion-Association Complexes Of Thallium And Mercury With Rhodamine 6g In Aqueous Solution, Nasrein El-Masri
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The present study involves the determination of traces of thallium and mercury in aqueous solution by forming ion-association complexes of these metals with rhodamine 6G (R6G) in the presence of iodide. Thallium(lll) and mercury(Il) are able to quench the fluorescence of R6G in the presence of iodide by forming ion—association complexes, and the degree of quenching correlates with the thallium(III) or mercury(II) concentrations . By using this method, the minimum amount of thallium- (III) that can be determined in aqueous solutions is approximately 4.00 X 10-6m, while the minimum amount of mercury(II) is approximately 3.00 X 10-6m. Thallium(I) cannot be …
