An Evaluation Of Modified 4-Aminopyridine Baits For Protecting Sunflower From Blackbird Damage, C. Edward Knittle, John L. Cummings, George M. Linz, Jerome F. Besser Feb 1988

An Evaluation Of Modified 4-Aminopyridine Baits For Protecting Sunflower From Blackbird Damage, C. Edward Knittle, John L. Cummings, George M. Linz, Jerome F. Besser

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)

Bait preference studies with red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in North Dakota sunflower fields indicated that sunflower seeds and a combination of sunflower seeds and chopped corn (MIX) were more successful in producing affected blackbirds, primarily red-winged blackbirds, than pearl barley or chopped corn used separately. A subsequent study compared the effectiveness of commercial Avitrol FC Corn Chops-99S to 4-aminopyridine-treated MIX-99S baits for reducing blackbird damage to ripening sunflower. Both baits significantly reduced damage in fields nearest a blackbird roost (within two miles), but were largely ineffective in fields farther than two miles from a roost. The ramifications of these results …

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Feb 1988

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Publications (WR)

The effective use of artificial wetlands for treatment of municipal wastewater is well documented; however, design and economic data for artificial wetlands development are limited (Gersberg et al., 1984a). This is due partly to regional differences in climate, soils, and vegetation and partly to the desired waste treatment. As a result, specific treatment levels and cost benefits relative to the use of an artificial wetlands for a particular site cannot be evaluated adequately without a pilot demonstration project. Las Vegas Wash receives sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been designated as a wetlands community park. Las …

Comparative Adsorption Studies On Clay Soils, Prasanna R. Mysore Jan 1988

Comparative Adsorption Studies On Clay Soils, Prasanna R. Mysore

Theses

An investigation has been made to study clay as sorbent in the treatment of the hazardous contaminants of potential sludge leachate emanating from industrial landfills.

Experimentally was studied six highly toxic and hazardous chemicals, which include: phenol, aniline, cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, cresol and monochlorophenol. Vermiculate, Kaolinite, Attacote and Hectorite clays were studied as the sorbent material. Removal of organic pollutants were measured using a total organic carbon analyzer (TOC).

Results indicate that these clays can be used for some treatment of the above mentioned organic compounds. The study shows that removal of organic pollutants by clay depends on several factors, such …

Oxidation Of N,N-Dimethylformamide And N,N-Dimethylacetamide In A Photoreactor, Su-Jen Syu Jan 1988

Oxidation Of N,N-Dimethylformamide And N,N-Dimethylacetamide In A Photoreactor, Su-Jen Syu

Theses

Oxidation of N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF) and N,N-dimethylacetamide(DMA) was investigated in a 30 liter semi-batch reactor. Five reaction processes were studied by using UV alone, O3 alone, O2/UV, O2/O3/UV and H2 O2/UV respectively. Mathematical models have been developed to interpret the reaction kinetics. Reaction rate constants and mass transfer coefficients were determined by using Rosenbrock Hillclimb optimization algorithm. The experimental data and the predicted results from the models were compared. The kinetic parameters obtained from the previous semi-batch modes were applied to the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system. Results of this work show …

Seasonal Variations In Water Quality Parameters Of The Mississippi River Near St. Cloud, Mn, Stephen B. Ellingson, Alfred J. Hopwood

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - Water quality parameters were monitored in the Mississippi River and three tributaries (Harris Channel, Watab Creek, and Sauk River) from July 1980 to April 1981. Results were correlated with water temperature and discharge to assess seasonal changes. Effects of tributary inflow on the river were determined. Planktonic carbon was estimated with the firefly luciferin-luciferase system which measures adenosine triphosphate extracted from viable cells. Particulate organic matter, planktonic carbon, and percentage viable carbon were correlated with temperature (p ~ 0.6) while nitrate plus nitrite was inversely correlated with temperature and discharge. Only the Sauk River affected the water quality …

An Ab Initio Investigation Of The Stabilization Of Selected Β-Substituted Ethyl Cations And Α-Substituted Methyl Cations, Julia C. White, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this study, we calculate the stabilization of β-substituted ethyl cations (R = H, Li, BeH, BH_2, CH_3, NH_2, OH, F, Na, MgH, AlH_2, SiH_3, PH_2, SH, Cl) and α-substituted methyl cations (R = H, Li, CH_3, NH_2, OH, F, Na, SiH_3, PH_2, SH, Cl) in order to obtain a relationship between the nature of the substituent and the degree of stabilization of the cation. Results show that the stabilization energy is related to the electronegativity of the β substituents, but not the α substituents. The rotational barrier of the β-substituted ethyl cation is linearly related to the Mulliken population …

Dredging Management: A Comparative Analysis Of Mid-Sized U.S. North Atlantic Ports, Matthew H. Masters Jan 1988

Dredging Management: A Comparative Analysis Of Mid-Sized U.S. North Atlantic Ports, Matthew H. Masters

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Dredging management within the states of Rhode Island, Maine and Connecticut is examined through an analysis of the ports of Providence, Portland, and New Haven. These ports were selected from a field of 30 Atlantic Coast ports through a multivariate statistical analysis, based on similarities in size, function and geography. Each port's dredging history was compiled to illustrate the frequency and magnitude of dredging activity among the three states. Pertinent state laws, regulations and policies regarding dredging and dredged material disposal were reviewed in an attempt to identify similarities and differences. It was believed that differences among each state's regulatory …

The Dynamic Balance Between Experts And The Public In The Assessment Of Hazards: Ocean Incineration - The U.S. Experience, Sally J. Spadaro

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Understanding environmental threats posed as a byproduct of technology has become an important role for our federal governmental agencies. This study examined environmental hazard assessment in theory and in practice. Discussion established the unique nature of environmental hazard assessment as compared to financial or natural hazard assessment. This first section examined advantages and shortcomings of four methods to judge the tolerability of environmental hazards: Natural Baselines, Risk/Cost/Benefit Analysis, Revealed Preferences, and Expressed Preferences. The differences in perspectives between expert risk assessors and the lay public was highlighted. For the case of ocean incineration of hazardous wastes the dilemma faced by …

An Analysis Of Offshore Safety During Oil And Gas Operations On The Outer Continental Shelf, James H. Collins Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Offshore Safety During Oil And Gas Operations On The Outer Continental Shelf, James H. Collins

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Trends in offshore fatalities and lost time accidents since the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act Amendments of 1978 need to be identified to allow an evaluation of the safety of offshore operations. Fatality and accident data between 1975 and 1985 are analyzed in the context of the Federal regulatory structure. The safety data generated for oil and gas drilling operations on the Outer Continental Shelf varies according to the source of the information. Modifications to accident reporting formats and data collection systems would benefit the offshore industry and the Government regulators in their efforts to improve operational safety. A major …

Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy Jan 1988

Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In New England an informal communications network exists between coastal research vessel operating institutions. Vessel scheduling and operational support has been identified as adequate for the current amount of research being conducted within the region. However, societal shift towards coastal regions is prompting an increase in attention to research within the coastal zone. Current and pending federal initiatives are responding to this increased research need. This, in turn, is beginning to impose greater demands on coastal vessel sea-time. Therefore, a strengthening of the region's inter-institutional communications network may be warranted for the future in order to better coordinate coastal research …

Theoretical Vibrational Study Of The Fx⋅⋅⋅O(Ch3)2 Hydrogen‐Bonded Complex, Y. Bouteiller, C. Mijoule, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

This paper presents the first ab initio attempt to reconstruct the observed band profile of the stretching fundamental vFX (X=H,D) in the FX⋅⋅⋅O(CH3)2 hydrogen‐bonded system. The two‐dimensional potential energy surface V(rFH,RF⋅⋅⋅O) is evaluated by means of large basis set SCF calculations. The related force constants up to the fourth order are obtained via the analytical fit to a polynomial expansion. The vibrational problem is solved by means of a variational treatment which includes the effects of mechanical anharmonicity. The side bands of the …

A Theoretical Investigation Of Several Low-Lying States Of Trans, Trans-1,3,5-Hexatriene, Robert J. Cave, Ernest R. Davidson

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Results from ab initio calculations concerning several low-lying electronic states of trans,trans-1,3,5-hexatriene are presented and compared with experimental and previous theoretical results. The lowest excited singlet state is predicted to be the ¹B_u state, having essentially valencelike π → π* character. The nominally doubly excited 2¹A_g state is found to lie approximately 0.6-0.9 eV above the 1¹B_u state. Results are also presented for several Rydberg states. The implications of the present results for current parametrizations of semiempirical π molecular orbital schemes are discussed.

Decline Of Coral Growth Rates At Negril, Jamaica, T. J. Goreau, Richard E. Dodge, P. D. Goreau

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Montastrea annularis heads were collected near Negril, Jamaica, along transects from open, normal reef conditions into the mouths of rivers draining the Negril Morass. Corals subject to turbidity (particulate peat and dissolved humic compouonds near rivers, re-suspended reef sediments away from them) were growing more slowly than those in normal circumstances. Surprisingly, corals growing fastest were slowing the most, and the slowest growers increasing growth rate. Linear regression analysis of growth trends over the past two decades revealed stable limit-cycle behavior: change of growth was inversely proportional to growth rate, with a very significant correlation coefficient of -0.92. We suggest …

Vibrational Frequencies And Intensities Of H‐Bonded And Li‐Bonded Complexes. H3n⋅⋅Hcl And H3n⋅⋅Licl, M. M. Szczesniak, I. J. Kurnig, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The geometries, energetics, and vibrational spectra are calculated for the two complexes at the SCF and correlated MP2 levels using the 6‐31G∗∗ basis set, augmented by a second set of d functions on Cl. While correlation represents an important factor in the binding of H3 N⋅⋅HCl, it contributes little to the stronger Li bond. Unlike the HCl stretch νs which decreases substantially in frequency and is greatly intensified in H3 N⋅⋅HCl, the frequency of the LiCl stretch undergoes an increase and little change is noted in its intensity, conforming to prior spectral measurements. The intensities of the …

Climatic Change In Western Australia, M A. Frahmand, R A. Nulsen Jan 1988

Climatic Change In Western Australia, M A. Frahmand, R A. Nulsen

Books & book chapters

The greenhouse effect is now an established scientific fact. Evidence published in the US and Australia in 1987 leaves little room for doubt. Carbon dioxide sent into the air whenever fossil fuels are burnt traps reflected heat from the Earth's surface - just as a greenhouse traps heat on a summer's day.

The uncertainties currently present in any prediction of future regional climate are very large. This paper presents a synopsis of current literature related to the future climate of Western Australia.
