FK-506 inhibits Ca2+-dependent transcription of lymphokine genes in T cells, and thereby acts as a powerful immunosuppressant. However, its potential therapeutic applications may be seriously limited by several side effects, including nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. At present, it is unclear whether these immunosuppressive and toxic effects result from interference with rehted biochemical processes. FK-506 is known to interact with FK-binding protein-12 (FKBP-12), an abundant cytosolic protein with cis.trans peptidyl-prolyl isomerase activity (PPlase) activity. Because rapamycin (RAP) similarly binds to FKBP-12, although it acts in a manner different from FK-506, by inhibiting T cell responses to lymphokines, such an interaction with FKBP-12 …

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
It is widely believed that more detail about health effects and likely exposure routes is apt to reduce citizens' concerns about low-probability Risks. The authors' study suggests that providing such detail may not be as useful as, e.g., addressing public concerns and keeping citizens current on officials' actions.

Risk Estimation And Expert Judgment: The Case Of Yucca Mountain, Kristin Shrader-Frechette
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Shrader-Frechette discusses factors responsible for acute disagreement between the federal government and Nevada citizens over potential Risks at Yucca Mountain and focuses on the use of expert judgment, concluding that some of them appear to exemplify "bad science." That aside, she argues that 1,000 year predictions cannot be made from current knowledge of geology or, e.g., institutional behavior and concludes that permanent disposal of radioactive waste is currently impossible.

The Development Of An Expert System For Hazardous Cargo Compatibility, Douglas A. Furst, Ronald E. Smith
The Development Of An Expert System For Hazardous Cargo Compatibility, Douglas A. Furst, Ronald E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This research demonstrates the application of expert system technology to automate the aircraft load selection process performed when transporting hazardous cargo. The resulting computer program is an expert system named HAZARD. This system incorporates the regulations governing hazardous cargo compatibility with the heuristics used by experts in loadplanning operations. The impetus to develop such a system is the January 1993 conversion of regulation guidelines for hazardous cargo classification and management in Air Force Regulation 71-4, to a universal international standard. The Cargo Operations Division of Headquarters Air Mobility Command at Scott AFB, was concerned that this change in procedures and …

Comparative Evaluation Of A Monocular Head Mounted Display Device Versus A Flat Screen Display Device In Presenting Aircraft Maintenance Technical Data, Jeffrey A. Friend, Randy S. Grinstead
Theses and Dissertations
As military developers provide increasingly complex weapon system, it becomes more difficult for maintenance technicians to perform their jobs. One aspect of the technicians' world is the need to access technical information in the performance of their duties. This study investigated two electronic display systems to evaluate which enhanced technician performance more. A Head Mounted Display (HMD) device and a portable hand-held flat-screen computer were evaluated in the performance of two flightline maintenance activities. Although both display systems were fully portable and self contained, only the HMD system allowed continuous access to technical information during task performance. In most cases, …
An Environmental Audit Management Plan For The Royal Australian Air Force, Warren L. Lear
An Environmental Audit Management Plan For The Royal Australian Air Force, Warren L. Lear
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop an Environmental Audit Management Plan (EAMP) tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The research also examined the resources which would be required to introduce the proposed EAMP into the RAAF. The literature on environmental compliance auditing identifies a number of essential characteristics required for an effective environmental auditing program. These characteristics, in conjunction with the USEPA design guidelines for the development of audit programs for government agencies, were used to guide the development of the RAAF EAMP. Information on Australian environmental legislation, DOD/RAAF policies and …

In labored but legible longhand, Loomis chronicled the expedition.' It is a fascinating record. Not only does it provide a starkly contrasting view to …

Biomonitoring Study Of A Constructed Wetland Site Treating Acid Mine Drainage, Barbara A. Ramey, Howard G. Halverson, Linda A. Taylor
Biomonitoring Study Of A Constructed Wetland Site Treating Acid Mine Drainage, Barbara A. Ramey, Howard G. Halverson, Linda A. Taylor
KWRRI Research Reports
Acid mine drainage (AMD) from an underground coal mine in the Jones Branch watershed in McCreary County, KY, substantially reduced water quality in Jones Branch. Downstream from the mine seeps, the pH was routinely below 4.5 and concentrations of most heavy metals, especially iron, were elevated. A cattail wetland (1,022 m2) was constructed on Jones Branch in 1989 to obviate the effects of the AMD. Monthly chemical monitoring was performed on the water from above, from below, and from the 26 cells within the wetland. Based on chemical monitoring, the wetland initially improved water quality, increasing the pH …

The Impact Of A Water-Imposed Interruption Of Growth In The Las Vegas Region, William T. White, Thomas M. Carroll, R. Keith Schwer
Publications (WR)
This study is prompted by the expectation that water supplies for the Las Vegas Valley, both those used currently and those additional quantities available from existing sources, cannot sustain significant further economic growth of the region beyond the year 2006.
There are five parts to this study. Part I uses a regional econometric (REMI) model to project the growth of the Las Vegas region to natural maturity, essentially unconstrained by an overriding water shortage.
Part II is a reinforcing cross-section analysis of metropolitan areas in the United States to learn the most common natural growth patterns and those that have …

Arkansas Agricultural Chemical Ground-Water Management Plan - Appendices, Gerald King, Darryl Little, Tim Jessup, Charles Armstrong
Arkansas Agricultural Chemical Ground-Water Management Plan - Appendices, Gerald King, Darryl Little, Tim Jessup, Charles Armstrong
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
The Arkansas Agricultural Chemical Ground-Water Management Plan (SMP) is based on the Draft State Pesticide Ground- Water Management Plan Guidance and The Pesticides and Ground-Water Protection Strategy prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The need for a plan to protect ground water from contamination by agricultural chemicals and agents arises from evidence nationwide that using these chemicals can, in some instances, lead to contamination. In February 1988, EPA proposed a strategy to regulate certain pesticides by prohibiting their use in areas vulnerable to leaching unless a state develops and implements an acceptable management plan. The advantage of a …

Parallel Computer Needs At Dartmouth College, David Kotz, Fillia Makedon, Matt Bishop, Scot Drysdale, Don Johnson, Takis Metaxas
Computer Science Technical Reports
To determine the need for a parallel computer on campus, a committee of the Graduate Program in Computer Science surveyed selected Dartmouth College faculty and students in December, 1991, and January, 1992. We hope that the information in this report can be used by many groups on campus, including the Computer Science graduate program and DAGS summer institute, Kiewit's NH Supercomputer Initiative, and by numerous researchers hoping to collaborate with people in other disciplines.
We found significant interest in parallel supercomputing on campus. An on-campus parallel supercomputing facility would not only support numerous courses and research projects, but would provide …

Three-Dimensional Solution Structure Of Human Interleukin-4 By Multidimensional Heteronuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Robert Powers, Daniel S. Garrett, Carl J. March, Eric A. Frieden, Angela M. Gronenborn, G. Marius Clore
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
The three-dimensional solution structure of recombinant human interleukin-4, a protein of 133 residues and 15.4 kilodaltons that plays a key role in the immune and inflammatory systems, has been solved by multidimensional heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The structure is dominated by a left-handed four-helix bundle with an unusual topology comprising two overhand connections. The linker elements between the helices are formed by either long loops, small helical turns, or short strands. The overall topology is remarkably similar to that of growth hormone and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, despite the absence of any sequence homology, and substantial differences in the relative …
