The Puma In The Central Mountains And Great Plains, Jay W. Tischendorf, F. Robert Henderson Apr 1995

The Puma In The Central Mountains And Great Plains, Jay W. Tischendorf, F. Robert Henderson

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Current status of the puma, Felis concolor, in the central mountains and Great Plains of Canada and the United States is discussed. Recent specimens and verified sightings are reviewed. Based on growing evidence, the puma has the potential to recolonize much of this region. Minor depredation problems can be expected, particularly as puma numbers increase and their range expands. This species is highly adaptable and extremely elusive, and its detection requires special skills. Professional wildlifers must be prepared to meet the dual challenges of managing both for recovery of this relatively rare carnivore and for its coexistence with humans.

Primase Structure And Function, Mark A. Griep Apr 1995

Primase Structure And Function, Mark A. Griep

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Primase is the ssDNA-dependent RNA polymerase that synthesizes RNA primers during DNA replication. In common with all DNA and RNA polymerases, primase has structural and functional features involved in polymer elongation. As RNA polymerase, it has structural and functional features for initiating chain synthesis. As a primase, it has structural and functional features for initiating chain synthesis on ssDNA. Using amino acid sequence analysis the structure of Escherichia coli primase responsible for binding zinc, at least three magnesium, and DnaB helicase has been identified. One of the magnesium binding motifs resembles the “active magnesium” motif found in all DNA and …

The Urban Stormwater Contribution Of Dissolved Trace Metals From The North Floodway Channel, Albuquerque, Nm To The Rio Grande, A. Kyle Harwood

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The quality and quantity of stormwater from urban areas is now recognized as an important element of pollution management and watershed health. A framework of federal, state and local regulations seeks to manage the impact of urban stormwater from the North Floodway Channel, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the receiving waters of the Rio Grande. The July 1995, scheduled issuance of a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for Albuquerque's stormwater discharge is placed in the context of New Mexico surface water quality regulation. Annual and event loadings are calculated for the contribution of three trace metals, including dissolved aluminum, …

Updating The Colorado River Compact, Jeffrey A. Freer Apr 1995

Updating The Colorado River Compact, Jeffrey A. Freer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Water is essential to life in the arid environment of the western United States. For centuries, humans have used the Colorado River to fulfill their needs and until the past 100 years, the use of the river was sustainable. Over the last 100 years, the Colorado River has been dammed and diverted to "reclaim" the arid west for man's use. In 1946, a Department of the Interior report stated that "Tomorrow the Colorado will be utilized to the very last drop. Its water will convert thousands of additional acres of sagebrush desert to flourishing farms and beautiful homes for servicemen, …

Accuracy Of Deoxynucleotide Incorporation By Soybean Chloroplast Dna-Polymerases Is Independent Of The Presence Of A 3' To 5' Exonuclease, J. Clinton Bailey Ii, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon Apr 1995

Accuracy Of Deoxynucleotide Incorporation By Soybean Chloroplast Dna-Polymerases Is Independent Of The Presence Of A 3' To 5' Exonuclease, J. Clinton Bailey Ii, Sabine Heinhorst, Gordon C. Cannon

Faculty Publications

DNA polymerase was purified from soybean (Glycine max) chloroplasts that were actively replicating DNA. The main form (form I) of the enzyme was associated with a low level of 3' to 5' exonuclease activity throughout purification, although the ratio of exonuclease to polymerase activity decreased with each successive purification step. A second form (form II) of DNA polymerase, which elutes from DEAE-cellulose at a higher salt concentration than form I, was devoid of any exonuclease activity. To assess the potential function of the 3' to 5' exonuclease in proofreading, the fidelity of deoxynucleotide incorporation was measured for form I DNA …

A Feasibility Study For Using Computerized Water Well Records To Delineate Areas Of Recharge-Discharge Potential, Lauren D. Hughes Apr 1995

A Feasibility Study For Using Computerized Water Well Records To Delineate Areas Of Recharge-Discharge Potential, Lauren D. Hughes

Masters Theses

A method for delineating areas of recharge-discharge potential has been developed utilizing computerized water well records. The methodology is based on the vertical head differences found between wells with shallow depths of submergence and those with deeper depths of submergence. The residual values generated represent the magnitude of vertical potential and can be contoured to delineate areas of recharge-discharge potential. Well data were obtained from the Kalamazoo County Groundwater Database. Well selection was based on depth of submergence and total well depth.

The methodology was tested in Texas and Schoolcraft Townships, the Donnell Lake Study Area, and Kalamazoo County. Regularly …

Hydrogeochemical Delineation Of A Groundwater Flow System, Berrien County, Michigan, Patrick J. Bartnik

Masters Theses

The objective of this study was to examine the possibility of determining groundwater flow directions from natural variations in groundwater chemistry. Groundwater samples were analyzed for major cation and anion concentrations. These data were to have been contoured and then compared with groundwater flow maps generated by conventional methods. The purpose was to determine whether a correlation could be drawn between the two methods. However, the results of the study did not allow for this comparison.

The plotted major cation and anion data did not lend themselves to contouring, which suggests that greater control may be required during the selection …

Mathematical Models Of Chemotherapy, John Carl Panetta Apr 1995

Mathematical Models Of Chemotherapy, John Carl Panetta

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Several mathematical models are developed to describe the effects of chemotherapy on both cancerous and normal tissue. Each model is defined by either a single homogeneous equation or a system of heterogeneous equations which describe the states of the normal and/or cancer cells. Periodic terms are added to model the effects of the chemotherapy. What we obtain are regions, in parameter space (dose and period), of acceptable drug regimens.

The models take into account various aspects of chemotherapy. These include, interactions between the cancer and normal tissue, cell specific chemotherapeutic drug, the use of non-constant parameters to aid in modeling …

Fage Determination Of Tropospheric Ho And Ho₂, Linda Acha George, Thomas M. Hard, Robert J. O'Brien Apr 1995

Fage Determination Of Tropospheric Ho And Ho₂, Linda Acha George, Thomas M. Hard, Robert J. O'Brien

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

FAGE (fluorescence assay with gas expansion) was developed as a sensitive technique for the detection of low-concentration free radicals in the atmosphere. The application of FAGE to tropospheric hydroxyl (H0) and hydroperoxyl (H0₂) radicals has yielded calibrated measurements of both species in both clean air and highly polluted urban air. For HO calibration, a continuously stirred tank reactor provides a uniform external HO concentration, which can be measured by gas chromatography of an HO-reactive hydrocarbon. The aerodynamics of the air-sampling process has been modeled computationally, with results that agree with empirical observations of the effects of nozzle diameter on HO …
