Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens Jan 1998

Geophysical Characterization, Redox Zonation, And Contaminant Distribution At A Groundwater/Surface Water Interface, John Lendvay, W A. Sauck, M L. Mccormick, M J. Barcelona, D H. Kampbell, J T. Wilson, P Adriaens

Environmental Science

Three transects along a groundwater/surface water interface were characterized for spatial distributions of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and geochemical conditions to evaluate the natural bioremediation potential of this environmental system. Partly on the basis of ground penetrating radar measurements, a conductive sediment layer was detected from the shore out to at least 300 m offshore which exhibited gradients in redox pairs and contaminant profiles. The cis-Dichloroethene and 1-chloroethene were predominant in the presence of elevated methane and ferrous iron concentrations and depressed sulfate and aquifer solids-bound iron concentrations. The shallow monitoring points were generally hypoxic to aerobic and exhibited values …

Interactive Image Cases For Medical Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Barb Ericson

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The development of an intelligent assistance agent for diagnostic radiology faces a number of challenges: e.g., how to gain access to the knowledge used an such visual problem solving tasks, how to operationalize it for further processing, and how to present it an the most useful manner for diagnosis. Our previous work an this domain placed an emphasis on the first two issues, and has shown that both perception and problem solving need to be supported an these types of tasks. However, the interface to the underlying intelligence in our first prototypes did not reflect how medical practitioners physically interact …

Ruby Canyon/Black Ridge Integrated Resource Management Plan, Record Of Decision And Finding Of No Significant Impact, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The decision to implement this plan is in conformance with the 1987 Grand Junction Resource Area Resource Management Plan (RMP). Many of the management actions being proposed in the plan constitute an amendment of the RMP. This integrated resource management plan employs a "benefits based management approach" which expands our management focus beyond lands and resources to also address resulting outcomes as improved conditions. Plan implementation for the RCBR ecosystem will be done through an interdisciplinary ad-hoc committee which defines issues and prioritizes management actions. In addition, the vision statement developed by the ad-hoc committee will continue to provide guidance …

Windbreak Renovation, Craig Stange, Jon Wilson, James R. Brandle, Mike Kuhns Jan 1998

Windbreak Renovation, Craig Stange, Jon Wilson, James R. Brandle, Mike Kuhns

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Windbreaks are an integral part of many farms and ranches and provide critical protection for farmsteads, livestock and crops. Unfortunately, many windbreaks planted in the 1930s and 1940s are losing their effectiveness due to age, poor health or neglect. In some cases, the windbreak no longer has the necessary density to provide winter protection. In other cases, overcrowding may have reduced the health and vigor of the windbreak, or the windbreak may have been invaded by aggressive sod-forming grasses such as smooth brome, reducing tree growth. Whatever the reason, many older windbreaks need renovation.

All windbreaks, even well-designed ones, need …

Unrelieved Pain And Distress In Animals: An Analysis Of Usda Data On Experimental Procedures, Martin Stephens, Philip Mendoza, Adrianna Weaver, Tamara Hamilton

Experimentation Collection

Pain and distress are core issues in the field of animal experimentation and in the controversy that surrounds it. We sought to add to the empirical base of the literature on pain and distress by examining government data on experimental procedures that caused unrelieved pain and distress (UPAD) in animals. Of the species regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), most of the approximately 100,000 animals subjected to UP AD during the year analyzed (1992) were guinea pigs and hamsters. Most of these animals were used in industry laboratories for various testing procedures, primarily vaccine potency testing. We discuss …

Invasive Plants: Changing The Landscape Of America, Federal Interagency Committee For The Management Of Noxious And Exotic Weeds, Randy G. Westbrooks Jan 1998

Invasive Plants: Changing The Landscape Of America, Federal Interagency Committee For The Management Of Noxious And Exotic Weeds, Randy G. Westbrooks

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In the 1950s, the American public became aware that certain chemicals endanger human health and the environment. In response to this threat, new rules and regulations regarding chemical manufacture, use, and disposal were developed under state and federal law. Today, the public has a much better understanding of the chemical pollution problem and generally supports management efforts. The 1990s have brought us face to face with another serious environmental threat: The invasion of the American landscape by aggressive nonnative plants. While farmers have always fought a battle with weeds in crops, invasion of these and other formerly weed-free lands has …

Mud Creek Urban Nonpoint Source Demonstration, Paul Vendrell, K. Teague Jan 1998

Mud Creek Urban Nonpoint Source Demonstration, Paul Vendrell, K. Teague

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Northwest Arkansas is the seventh fastest developing area in the nation. The conversion of rolling pastureland into paved city streets, parking lots, and buildings within this rapidly urbanizing region is reducing infiltration and intensifying stormwater runoff. In the city of Fayetteville alone, the population increased from 42,099 to 58,163 between 1990 and 1999, moving the city across the population threshold which will require the Phase II Stormwater Permit process. Approximately half of Fayetteville is included in the Illinois River Watershed, which has been identified as the third highest priority watershed in need of restoration in the state of Arkansas. Mud …

Record of Decisions (WY)

The Federal Coal Leasing Amendments Act of 1976 requires that Federal coal lands to be considered for leasing must be identified in a comprehensive land use plan. At the time the Great Divide Resource Management Plan (GDRA RMP, 1990) was prepared, approximately 60% of the Federal coal lands in the Carbon Basin Coal Area were leased and exempt from the coal screening/planning process. Subsequently, development of this lease was never pursued and the lease expired. In addition, the coal screening/planning process was not conducted on the remainder of the Federal coal lands in the Carbon Basin area during the RMP …

The Use Of Red Mud/Gypsum To Reduce Water Pollution From Sandy Soils Used For Vegetable Production, Ian Mcpharlin, W. J. Robertson, R. C. Jeffery Jan 1998

The Use Of Red Mud/Gypsum To Reduce Water Pollution From Sandy Soils Used For Vegetable Production, Ian Mcpharlin, W. J. Robertson, R. C. Jeffery

Research Reports

An important domestic and export vegetable industry is located on the sands of the Swan Coastal Plain (SCP) in Western Australia. The total value of the vegetable industry on the SCP was estimated at $90M in 1996/7 or about 50% of the total value of the industry. This vegetable production has been located on good quality sands such as the Spearwood and yellow Karrakatta sands, close to the coast, since the 1950s. However in recent years competition for this land for urban and industrial use has forced vegetable production onto soils with poorer water and phosphorus retention capacity such as …
