Mapping Urban Vegetation Changes Using Planetscope Imagery And Gis: A Case Study Of The 2024 Dubai Flood, Sumayya Almansoori, Xin Hong

In April 2024, unexpected heavy rainfall triggered one of the most severe flooding events in Dubai’s recent history, causing widespread concern for urban infrastructure and green spaces. This study evaluates the flood’s impact on urban vegetation in South Dubai using high-resolution PlanetScope satellite imagery and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Vegetation conditions before and after the flood (April 14 and April 18–19, 2024) were quantified and compared using NDVI analysis within QGIS to assess changes in vegetation health and coverage. The use of non-invasive media to evaluate the association between trace elements and diseases has spread in recent centuries. Fingernail samples were collected from 103 individuals, including both healthy participants and those undergoing hemodialysis, residing in Karbala, Iraq, and ranging in age from 21 to 75 years. The concentrations of lead were determined using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES). This study evaluates the effectiveness of log transformation in enhancing multiple regression models used to forecast air traffic movements (ATMs) in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using 60 monthly observations from October 2016 to September 2021, the analysis incorporates variables such as revenue, lockdown levels, COVID-19 metrics, exchange rates, gross domestic product, and population. Two models are compared: one using raw ATMs and another with log-transformed ATMs as the dependent variable.

Buffer capacity measures the ability of a system to maintain its original function when confronted with outside stresses and is often considered to be a key component of resilience. Farmers in southeastern Ontario are facing several threats such as seasonal drought and volatile markets, prompting necessary responses on how to effectively manage their farms. The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

This study builds upon our recent investigation, which utilized various morphologies and particle sizes of Zn₂SnO₄ and TiO₂. Zn₂SnO₄ can block UVB and part of UVA and shows much less photocatalytic activity than TiO₂. Herein, the current study aims to reduce the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂, a compound often utilized as an ultraviolet (UV) filter in sunscreen, by incorporating Zn₂SnO₄ as a composite. Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to global climate change, and developing efficient electrocatalysts for its reduction to useful products remains an important challenge in renewable energy and sustainable chemistry. Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes have been widely studied for selective CO₂-to-CO conversion, and recent efforts have focused on understanding how ligand structure and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes govern catalytic activity. Background/Objectives: Unhealthy lifestyles lead to chronic low-grade inflammation, increasing the risk of colorectal cancer. Few studies in East Asia have examined the association between the dietary inflammation potential and colorectal cancer incidence. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this association further in the Japanese population. Methods: This study included 38,807 men aged 45–74 years who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based prospective study (JPHC Study). The energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) was derived from a food frequency questionnaire. In this project, we used Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to explore the shape and structure of high-dimensional data and the timeliness dimension of information quality through topological data analysis, with the long-term goal of automatically computing timeliness values that reflect how useful data items are for decision making. Mountain glaciers are disappearing rapidly, and with their disappearance, we may be losing unstudied biodiversity and genetic resources. A variety of habitats for microorganisms exist on glaciers, especially within pockets of supraglacial sediments (cryoconite) that support high levels of biological activity and diversity. We used biogeochemical approaches, high-throughput DNA sequencing, and microscopy to describe the biogeochemistry and microbial communities of supraglacial sediments on the Dinwoody Glacier in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) concentrations were high, and C:N ratios were close to the Redfield ratio indicating active nutrient cycling. We found unique microbial communities in sediments …

In view of the toxic effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), fast and effective assessment of their concentrations in marine mammals is important for understanding individual and population-level health impacts. This study developed an ultrasonic-based method that is less time-consuming, uses minimal solvent, and thus is more sustainable than the gold standard Soxhlet method for accurate analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and benzene hexachlorides (BHC) in false killer whale blubber. Marine-derived symbiotic microorganisms are recognized as a promising source of bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic applications, yet research on jellyfish-associated bacteria remains limited. This study examines the bioactivity of peptide fractions derived from symbiotic bacteria isolated from the jellyfish Catostylus sp., collected from the coastal waters of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, with a focus on their anticancer and antioxidant properties. Following sample collection, the symbiont bacteria were isolated, enzymatically hydrolyzed, and purified before their biological activity was evaluated. Eccentricity faults in electric machines remain a critical concern, as they generate uneven magnetic forces that increase vibration and noise, ultimately raising the risk of premature motor failure. This study proposes a method for the early detection of dynamic eccentricity (DE) faults in hydropower plants through an advanced optimization-based parameter identification technique integrated with finite element analysis (FEA). Finite element modeling (FEM) is first used to analyze an existing salient-pole synchronous generator (SPSG) from a hydroelectric power plant in Türkiye. Recent advances in machine learning and deep learning have greatly improved how we detect plant diseases, making diagnoses more accurate, faster, and easier to scale. However, many existing solutions depend on large, pretrained models that need powerful hardware, which limits their use in the field, especially in areas with limited resources. To tackle this, we designed a custom lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) built from scratch using 20,000 carefully selected images from the PlantVillage tomato dataset. Traffic signal management is a critical challenge due to its environmental, economic, and public health impacts. The maximum weighted flow method (MaxWeightedFlow) was developed to optimize traffic flow at isolated and coordinated urban intersections. This study proposes a new method, the novel MaxWeightedFlow, which includes two key strategies to enhance the classical approach. The first strategy reduces computational burden by estimating vehicle approach times based on instantaneous speeds, improving real-time performance. The lack of protection coordination poses a significant threat, compromising overall system reliability. Accurate delineation of inland waterbodies is critical for applications such as hydrological monitoring, disaster response preparedness and response, and environmental management. While optical satellite imagery is hindered by cloud cover or low-light conditions, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) provides consistent surface observations regardless of weather or illumination. This study introduces a deep learning-based ensemble framework for precise inland waterbody detection using high-resolution X-band Capella SAR imagery.
