A New Series Of Selective Rodenticides, David L. Peardon

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

A new series of target-specific, single-dose rodenticides has been discovered by Rohm and Haas Company (Peardon, 1972; Peardon et al., 1972). One compound, RH-787, best exemplifies the balance of desirable qualities of a good rodenticide. It is effective against a broad spectrum of pest rodents, has a desirable margin of safety in non-target animals, is well accepted in baits, causes no secondary hazard problems and is effective against "Warfarin-resistant" (anticoagulant-resistant) rats. This material will become commercially available upon receipt of registration from the EPA.

A Field Study Of Infiltration On Various Agricultural Soils, Stephen J. Stephen

The purpose of the study was to ascertain if infiltration and temperature varied significantly among the selected soil types of the Smithfield, Otonabee, Wendigo and Farmington Series. These data were gathered from field tests performed during the summer months in Ontario and Victoria Counties.

A stopwatch was used to measure the number of seconds that were required for 0.8 inches of water to disappear into the soil inside a 4 inch diameter single ring infiltrometer which had been placed one inch into the soil surface. The soil temperature was recorded at the same time.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the largest single Federal agencies involved in the planning, design and construction of public waterborne transportation facilities. A critical review of a typical corps of Engineers survey report on the improvements to a harbor should provide an insight to the means of allocating the costs and benefits resulting from government expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to review this process using as a vehicle the proposed improvements to the navigation channel at New London, Connecticut

Ic0 flow directions on the glaciated Appalachian Plateau in central New York were from the Adirondack Hountains. This is demonstrated by both striae directions and erratic provena..-1ce studies. No evidence for more than one Wisconsin glaciation as suggested by Rich (1935) could be found. Theories for local glaciation during the decline and after the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet were also unsubstantiated. The East and West Branches Delaware River had different styles of daglaciation. The West Branch is characterized by zones of stagnation. An extensive compiliation and general evaluation of the literature is presented which describes the temperature interaction with toxicity. Recent literature is summarized and made accessible along with a few generalized relationships such that researchers may design studies in a manner that will increase the utility of their results. A detailed indexing system is employed which makes the information contained in the report accessible by author, toxicant, and text organism. Summary tables of the most pertinent literature are also presented for easy subject retrieval. The Fifth Vertebrate Pest Conference drew a registered attendance of 239 with an estimated additional 50-75 persons who attended portions of the conference but did not register. As in past conferences, the attendance was made up of individuals having varying interests in vertebrate pest problems from twenty two states plus the District of Columbia. Participants from Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, India and New Zealand contributed greatly to the success of the conference and provided further exchange of information on an international level.

Resistance of commensal rodents to anticoagulant rodenticides is not a new phenomenon. Its confirmed presence in several areas of northern Europe is wel1-documented (Jackson 1969, 1972; Bentley 1969; Lund 1969). Not until 1971 was a similar situation with the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) to be demonstrated in the United States (Jackson et al. 1971). Because it represents an initial occurrence, the site and background observations will be described in some detail. The deleterious effects and downstream distribution of pollutants from domestic sewage discharged at Bemidji, Minnesota, are examined with reference lo parameters for pollution as defined by the state's Pollution Control Agency (PCA). Periodic overloading of the resort city's sewage treatment plant also is considered, along with problems pertinent to a community upstream of popular vacation facilities on a lake and river system.

In Western Australia, provisions for its control are written into the Health Act and many other Acts besides the Environmental Protection Act of 1971.

The Stratigraphy And Economic Potential Of Permo-Pennsylvanian Strata In Southwestern North Dakota, Harold C. Ziebarth

This study of the Fermo-Pennsylvanian Minnelusa Group in North Dakota was designed to clarify the stratigraphy, illustrate association of depositional environments, and to relate the geologic history and economic potential of these strata.

The Minnelusa Group is defined here to include strata above the unconformity on the Madison and Big Snowy Groups and below the Opeche Formation. The Minnelusa Group in North Dakota contains the Tyler, Alaska Bench, Amsden and Broom Creek Formations. The Amsden has been divided into three marker defined lithozones designated, in ascending order, Medora, Dickinson, and Bismarck.
