New Developments In Rodenticides, William B. Jackson Dec 1979

New Developments In Rodenticides, William B. Jackson

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Rodenticides have become the "standard" for rodent control, and Anti-coagulants have been the quid pro quo. For three decades warfarin(and other dicoumarols) and then the indandiones have been the control element for commensal rodents. However, excessive and indiscriminant uses have selected for resistant populations of Norway rats, roof rats, and house mice in many parts of the U.S. (Jackson and Ashton, 1979). Though resistance is often referenced to warfarin, it is a cross-resistance to all of the currently available, "first-generation" anticoagulants.

Mesurol As A Bird Repellent On Grapes In Ohio, Hailu Kassa, Willaim B. Jackson

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Schafer and Brunton (1971) determined that methiocarb [3,5-dimethyl-4-(methylthio)phenol methylcarbamate] was efficaceous as a bird repellent, reporting low R50 and LD50 values for several bird species. Guarino (1972) suggested that bird damage to corn, soybeans, rice, sorghum, cherries, and grapes could be reduced by spraying with methiocarb. Crase and DeHaven (1976) concluded that methiocarb could be an effective broad-spectrum bird repellent and crop protectant. Bollengier et al. (1973), Stone et al. (1974), Ali (1978), Teklehaimanot (1978), and Jackson et al. (1978) reported that bird damage to blueberries was significantly lower in methiocarb-treated fields than in the untreated fields. Rogers (1974) describes …

Cooling Towers As Obstacles In Bird Migrations, Manfred Temme, William B. Jackson Nov 1979

Cooling Towers As Obstacles In Bird Migrations, Manfred Temme, William B. Jackson

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Tall, man-made structures, such as radio and television towers, monuments, smoke stacks, light houses and other buildings, are known to be lethal obstructions to migrating birds. Not only the tower itself, but the associated guy and electrical wires may cause injury or death to birds, especially the nocturnal migrants. A vast number of mortality reports have already emerged across the country, indicating the seriousness and extent of this problem. Tall TV towers seem to be the most hazardous to avian migrants, causing losses up to 2000 birds in several nights during fall migration in Florida (Stevensen 1956, 1958). Dur- ing …

Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Nebraska Lakes, F. A. Morris, M. K. Morris, W. D. Taylor, L. R. Williams, S. C. Hern, V. W. Lambou

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:

  • develop and optimize systems and strategies for monitoring …

Non-Game Bird Habitat Associated With Haul Roads And Surface Mining For Bentonite Clay, Tim A. Schaid Jan 1979

Non-Game Bird Habitat Associated With Haul Roads And Surface Mining For Bentonite Clay, Tim A. Schaid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A 2 year study was conducted to investigate possible differences in density and diversity of birds in relation to distance from mining haul roads and various aged mine spoils. Winter bird surveys and breeding bird counts were conducted during 1977 and 1978. Bird density and diversity were estimated and compared between the following habitat areas: old spoils (mined ≥20 years ago, unreclaimed), new spoils (mined ≤20 years ago, reclaimed) and unmined areas. Within unmined areas density and diversity of birds 100m, 300m, 500m, and 900m from a mining haul road were compared to detect differences in density and diversity with …

Modelling The Influence Of Eutrophication On The Coldwater Fishery Habitat Of Lake Mcconaughy, A "Two-Story" Reservoir, Melvin W. Taylor Jan 1979

Modelling The Influence Of Eutrophication On The Coldwater Fishery Habitat Of Lake Mcconaughy, A "Two-Story" Reservoir, Melvin W. Taylor

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The lifespan of the existing coldwater habitat in Lake McConaughy is unknown, To promulgate effective management and regulatory strategies, a method of predicting this lifespan was needed, Ideally, this procedure should also provide potential management philosophies that would retard eutrophication, The LAKSCI computerized simulation model of Systems Control, Inc, was modified to assist in solving this problem, Data for model input were collected from August 1976 to August 1978. When calibrated the model proved satisfactory for predicting water level and temperatures, but unsatisfactory in prediction of water chemistry without additional data and refinement,

Changes In The Forest Composition In The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region Of Ontario And The Resultant Outbreaks Of The Spruce Budworm Choristoneura Fumiferana (Clem.), John F. Bowen Jan 1979

Changes In The Forest Composition In The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region Of Ontario And The Resultant Outbreaks Of The Spruce Budworm Choristoneura Fumiferana (Clem.), John F. Bowen

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana Clem. is the foremost forest pest in Canada. The species is endemic to eastern North America. Since the turn of the century the insect has become a major problem in the “Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region” of Ontario, an area where prior to recent times the insect did not occur in damaging numbers.

Analysis of the life cycle of the insect reveals that the only limiting factor capable of controlling outbreaks is a lack of food. The required tree species is balsam fir Abies balsama (L.) Mill. The forests of Ontario have been altered …

Spatial Context And Temporal Aspects Of The Sensitive Area Concept In Ontario, Barbara Elizabeth Anderson Jan 1979

Spatial Context And Temporal Aspects Of The Sensitive Area Concept In Ontario, Barbara Elizabeth Anderson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The term “sensitive area” is a product of planning initiatives which have developed within the province of Ontario since the early nineteen seventies. As there are a number of closely related terms utilized the sensitive areas concept generally is defined as the creation of a reserve or the removal of land from unfettered commercial development or intense human use. The concept has been associated with a broad range of environmental concerns such as, the protection of wildlife habitat, maintenance of ecological function, retention of scenic areas and preservation of historic sites. Similar initiatives across North America are surveyed and the …

Economic Feasibility Of Ethanol, Methanol And Alcohol-Gasoline Blends As Alternatives To Gasoline As Motor Fuels, Marjorie Diane Pettypool Jan 1979

Economic Feasibility Of Ethanol, Methanol And Alcohol-Gasoline Blends As Alternatives To Gasoline As Motor Fuels, Marjorie Diane Pettypool

Masters Theses

The major emphasis of this study is the economic feasibility of the use of alcohol-gasoline blends (gasohol) and alcohol fuels; but all major issues concerning the use of gasohol and alcohol fuels are explored. The specific objectives of the investigation include the determination of the specific performance properties of the fuels, their pollutant emissions (compared to gasoline), and their costs compared to gasoline.

While opponents to the use of alcohol fuels are more vocal than proponents, citing high cost and the lack of raw materials as objections, proponents believe new processes that can use any cellulose containing material as a …

State Government And Ocs Policy: An Analysis Of The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act And The Amendments Of 1978, Bruce Vild Jan 1979

State Government And Ocs Policy: An Analysis Of The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act And The Amendments Of 1978, Bruce Vild

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An Energy Research and Development Administration report indicates that the United States is increasing its dependence on oil from the countries that participated in the 1973 oil embargo. Given the volatile situation in the Middle East at this writing, the Carter Administration's peace initiatives notwithstanding, this seems an imprudent policy. And, at a time when "Project Independence" is a recent memory, there is a great deal of irony in increased importation. It seems in the Nation's best interest to reverse that trend. Natural gas is also in demand, of course, especially in the Northeast during the winter. The best solution …

Heavy Metal Patterns In Big And Aux Vases River Drainage Rolla 1⁰ X 2⁰ Quadrangle, Missouri, Behzad Afzali

Masters Theses

"Some 71 active stream sediment, bank sediment, biota, and stream water samples were collected at selected sites along the Big River and Aux Vases rivers and tributaries. The pH, alkalinity, specific conductance, temperature were determined and samples analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Ni, and Cd content.

Stream waters carry heavy metals in low parts per billion. Greatest heavy metal content is in the stream waters of Flat River and lower Big River.

Acid leachable heavy metal content of -80 mesh fractions of stream sediments for Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Ni, and Cd are orders of magnitude greater than that …
