Part I. Catalytic Hydrocarbon Reforming By Technetium Catalysts.|Npart Ii.|Pacetone Azine And 3,5,5-Trimethyl-2-Pyrazoline Adducts Of Palladium Chloride, James Lynn Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
Technetium catalyzes hydrocarbon reforming reactions of dehydrocyclization, isomerization, hydrogenolysis, and coke formation. A kinetic equation was derived and E_a and A_o evaluated for dehydrocyclization of n-heptane, isomerization of n-pentane, and dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane and cyclohexane. The results were related to the metal, the form of the catalyst, catalyst support, and the deactivation of the catalyst. The effect of sulfur compounds was determined. No residual radioactivity in the product was observed. The ligands, acetone azine (AA) and 3,5,5-trimethyl-2- pyrazoline (Py), reacted with (C_6H_5CN)_2PdCl_2 to form adducts, L_2PdCl_2 and (LPdCl_2)_n. Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods and some molecular weights determined. …
Thermodynamic Stability Constants Of Silver Bromide Complexes In Water And Water-Acetone Mixtures Determined By Ion-Selective Electrode Measurements, Arthur Lee Cummings
Thermodynamic Stability Constants Of Silver Bromide Complexes In Water And Water-Acetone Mixtures Determined By Ion-Selective Electrode Measurements, Arthur Lee Cummings
Theses and Dissertations
Thermodynamic equilibrium constants for silver(I) bromide complexes were determined by ion-selective membrane electrode potential measurements in water and in mixtures of water and acetone of approximately 5, 10 and 15 percent acetone by weight. Values of the solubility product constant were determined in each solvent system by calibration of a silver bromide membrane electrode with silver nitrate solutions and with sodium bromide solutions. Stability constants of silver(I) bromide complexes were determined using a silver ion-selective, silver sulfide membrane electrode in unsaturated solutions in which the formal concentrations of silver(I) and of bromide ranged from approximately I x 10-8 to 7 …

The Benthic Communities Of The Eastern Rocky Shore Areas Of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Thomas Whitney Toole
The Benthic Communities Of The Eastern Rocky Shore Areas Of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Thomas Whitney Toole
Theses and Dissertations
Information about the benthic macroinvertebrate populations along the eastern shore of Goshen Bay, Utah Lake, Utah, can be used, in part, to determine future management of the lake. In the project herein reported, cement artificial substrate samplers were used to sample two types of substrate: rubble and compacted calcareous tufa. Monthly samples were obtained from each type of substrate from March 1972 to May 1973. An amphipod, Hyalela azteca and a chironomid, Dicrotendipes fumidus were the dominant organisms in numbers and tiomass. Amphipod numbers were dependent upon the amount of algal standing crop. Elimination of this area could affect the …
Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter
Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter
Dissertations and Theses
Let a probability driven switch be defined as a switch of three input paths and three output paths. The status of the input paths defines a probability for each output path (as to whether it will generate a signal or not.) One output path is linked to one input path, so the results of the switch at time t can affect the switch at time t+1. A switch so constructed can be defined (by the probabilities) to take on the function of the standard logic gates (AND, OR, …) A net constructed of these switches can be “taught” by …

Growth Line Analysis Of A Recent Scallop Population And It's [Sic] Potential For Paleoecology, John F. Dillon
Growth Line Analysis Of A Recent Scallop Population And It's [Sic] Potential For Paleoecology, John F. Dillon
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Periodic growth lines can be used to construct a record of variations in the growth rate of a fossil or recent shell. Because growth rate is largely dependent upon environmental conditions, such a record serves also as an indication of variations in the environment during the lifetime of the shell. Although the very presence of such variations is of some paleoecologic interest, the main potential of growth lines in paleoecology lies in an extension of this argument. This is the concept that the contemporaneity of fossil organisms could be tested by examining their growth rate records for similarities; these would …
A Petrologic And Quantitative Compositional Study Of Four Rocks From The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Jonathan A. Green
A Petrologic And Quantitative Compositional Study Of Four Rocks From The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Jonathan A. Green
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The composition of major mineral phases in four rocks from the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge, as determined by electron microprobe analysis and supplemented by additional mineralogic and petrographic study, have provided data for comparison with continental mafic assemblages. The compositional range of coexisting minerals in the samples: a nepheline-normative gabbro (teschenite), an olivine tholeiite, and two uralitized norites, is similar to the ranges of comparable continental suites. The teschenite contains pyroxene (Wo48-46 En37-23Fs15-31) with high amounts of CaO (20.3-22.2 wt %), Al2O3 (2.9-6.8 wt. %), and Ti02 (1.2-2.9 wt. %) characteristic of continental …
Levi Structures For Polynomial Ideals., Richard Michael Grassl
Levi Structures For Polynomial Ideals., Richard Michael Grassl
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Let R be the ring of polynomials in a denumerable set of independent indeterminates over a field F and let I be an ideal (Xo,x1,x2, ... ) in R. A Levi structure for I provides bases for I and R as vector spaces over F and an associated algorithm for determining whether an element of R is in I.
Such structures have been developed previously for certain principal differential ideals [i.e., ideals (Xc),x1 , ... ) with xj the j-th derivative of Xol in which the generator is homogeneous and isobaric and for a family of related ordinary ideals. The …
Branching Processes With Cataclysmic Environmental Changes., Juan F. Corona-BurgueñO
Branching Processes With Cataclysmic Environmental Changes., Juan F. Corona-BurgueñO
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this dissertation we consider a continuous time branching process with a random environment in which the environment changes according to a continuous time Markov chain. The extinction problem for this model is posed and solved by two distinct methods: by the method of random evolutions of Griego and Hersh and by the results of Athreya and Karlin on branching processes with random environments. Limit theorems for the population size as well as a system of partial differential equations for the expected number of particles (as functions of time) are obtained.
General Geodesic Motion In The Extended Kerr Manifold, Richard H. St. John
General Geodesic Motion In The Extended Kerr Manifold, Richard H. St. John
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The timelike and null geodesics in the Kerr metric describe important properties of the space surrounding a rotating black hole. The general characteristics of these geodesics, with an emphasis on those on the axis of symmetry and the equatorial plane, are found in this paper. On the axis of symmetry, the behavior of all timelike and null geodesics is completely described. The accessibility of various spaces added for geodesic completeness in the extended manifold is found by making local observations of geodesics in one coordinate patch from geodesics in another. The analysis on the equatorial plane shows that for a …
Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations In A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham
Existence And Comparison Results For Differential Equations In A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The study of the Cauchy problem for differential equations in a Banach space has taken two different directions. One direction is to find compactness type conditions that guarantee only existence of solutions and the corresponding results are extensions of the classical Peano's theorem. The other approach is to employ monotonicity (accretive or dissipative) type conditions that assure existence as well as uniqueness of solutions. In fact, this latter method shows that uniqueness conditions imply existence of solutions also [37] and therefore may be regarded as extensions of the classical Picard's theorem.
Differential Equations On Closed Subsets Of A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham
Differential Equations On Closed Subsets Of A Banach Space, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The problem of existence of solutions to the initial value problem [see pdf for notations], where [see pdf for notations], F is a locally closed subset of a Banach space E. Nonlinear comparison functions and dissipative type conditions in terms of Lyapunovlike functions are employed. A new comparison theorem is established which helps in surmounting the difficulties that arise in this general set-up.
A Technic In Perturbation Theory, G. S. Ladde, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham
A Technic In Perturbation Theory, G. S. Ladde, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
A study of the effect of perturbations of differential equations depends on the method employed and on the nature of perturbations. One of the most used technics is that of Lyapunov method and the other is the nonlinear variation of parameters formula [3]. These methods dictate that we measure the perturbations by means of a norm and thus destroy the ideal nature, if any, of the perturbing terms. Recently an effort was made to correct this unpleasant situation [1,2]. In this paper, we wish to develop a new comparison theorem that connects the solutions of perturbed and unperturbed differential systems …
On The Redundancy Of Monotony Assumption, V. Lakshmikantham
On The Redundancy Of Monotony Assumption, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
It is well known that all the results in integral inequalities of Bellman-Gronwall-Reid type demand an assumption of monotony on the functions involved. Since the corresponding theory of differential inequalities does not require the monotonic assumption, it is believed that this extra condition is due to the technics employed rather than the necessity. It is also well known that in proving the convergence of successive approximations, it becomes crucial to suppose an additional restriction of monotony on the functions satisfying uniqueness criteria. The question whether this additional assumption is really needed has been open for many years. This problem was …
Effect Of Molecular Angular Momentum On The Thermal Conductivity Of A Multicomponent Gas Mixture, Louis Biolsi Jr., Edward Allen Mason
Effect Of Molecular Angular Momentum On The Thermal Conductivity Of A Multicomponent Gas Mixture, Louis Biolsi Jr., Edward Allen Mason
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of molecular angular momentum (spin polarization) on the thermal conductivity of a multicomponent gas mixture are considered. The Wang Chang-Uhlenbeck approach to the kinetic theory of gases with internal states is used. Formal results are obtained for the thermal conductivity of a gas mixture of uniform composition. These results are given in terms of the quantum mechanical degeneracy-averaged cross section.

A Cephalometric Study Of Mandibulo-Facial Disostosis In Monozygotic Twins Using Computerized Methods, Lyn M. Lamberton
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An investigation using computerized cephalometrics has been conducted to consider the cephalometric factors responsible for the characteristic appearance evident in individuals afflicted with Mandibulo-Facial Dysostosis. A pair of Negro monozygotic affected twins were studied using the other 10 non-affected members of the family as a control to minimize the environmental and hereditary factors. The Rocky Mountain Data System was utilized to analyze the lateral and frontal cephalometric radiographs of each individual using Ricketts Analysis and the data were subjected to statistical tests to determine the factors contributory to the syndrome. Age and size were considered and adjustments were made to …
Eikonal Distorted-Wave Calculation For The Excitation Of H By He, Jerry Peacher, Richard H. Shields
Eikonal Distorted-Wave Calculation For The Excitation Of H By He, Jerry Peacher, Richard H. Shields
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The eikonal distorted-wave Born approximation developed recently by Chen, Joachain, and Watson is applied to hydrogen excitation by helium impact in the intermediate-energy range. The differential and total cross sections for the excitation of the hydrogen atom to the 2s, 2p±, or 2p0 state by helium impact are presented. These results are compared to experiment and previous calculations. The differential cross section for the excitation of hydrogen to the 2s state compares well with the experimental data of Thomas and Sauers in shape and slope, but has a discrepancy in magnitude.
Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik
Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik
Dissertations and Theses
Groundwater from thirty-three wells which are randomly distributed within 42 square miles of the residential, agricultural and industrial area of East Portland Terraces have been analyzed. The area is moderately wet with an annual precipitation of about 37 inches. Residual and transported sediments from different sources, dominantly volcanic, comprise the subsurface lithology. The sedimentary units that were deposited by means of rivers and lakes have filled an original structural and erosional valley in the area. This relatively unconsolidated valley filling is about 900 feet of predominantly lenticular, stratified and cross-bedded lenses of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders.

Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos
Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos
Dissertations and Theses
Carbon samples were electrically heated while immersed in liquid helium I. Their temperature rise was observed on an oscilloscope as a function of the time after the onset of the electric current. There was no indication of the temperature overshoot previously reported for the case of bismuth in liquid helium.
Reasons are presented for the difference in behavior of carbon and bismuth.
Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons
Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons
Dissertations and Theses
Present-day builders of harpsichords disagree as to the use of iron or carbon-steel wire in their attempt to duplicate the tonal qualities of the early 16th century instruments. The variations in tone produced by vibrating iron and steel wires may be due, at least in part, to differences in their decay characteristics. A wire was set into vibration by placing a section in a magnetic field and passing a variable-frequency alternating current through it. A condition of resonance was established by appropriately selecting frequencies, lengths, and tensions that would simultaneously satisfy the relationship: fr = n/2L(T/p)1/2. Then measurements of decay …

Lateral head Roentgenograms were obtained and cephalometric evaluation of the Skeletal and Dental Pattern was carried out using the Ricketts, Steiner, and Tweed Analyses.
The mean values for the Mexican were compared …
Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The consumption of alcohol is a problem not only in this country (U.S.), but also in many other places in the world. Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.
In an effort to establish the cause for this behavior, we put Sprague-Dawley albino rats on either a poor or good basal diet. Once every other day the rats were injected with a solution of cocaine. …
The Numerical Solution Of The Generalized Eigenvalue Problem For Rectangular Matrices, Charles Henry Burris Jr.
The Numerical Solution Of The Generalized Eigenvalue Problem For Rectangular Matrices, Charles Henry Burris Jr.
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This paper studies the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem Ax=λBx for real, rectangular matrices A and B. Several current algorithms for solving this problem are examined, most of which involve a determination of the rank of B, or one of its submatrices. An example is given in which such a decision cannot be made without introducing unnecessary error into the problem. The QZR Algorithm is then introduced as an algorithm which uses unitary transformations to reduce the matrices to a prescribed canonical form. This canonical form provides the information necessary for making decisions about rank. Since A and B can be non …
Independence, Essential Independence And Zero Correlation Of Two Random Variables Conditioned On A Third., Chester Raymond Crain Jr.
Independence, Essential Independence And Zero Correlation Of Two Random Variables Conditioned On A Third., Chester Raymond Crain Jr.
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In a recent paper Stoughton Bell and William J. Zimmer defined three distinct types of conditional independence; which they call pointwise, intervalwise and strong; of two random variables given a third. They considered these and four closely related independence properties, and they examined the relationships among the 128 (=23+4) Boolean combinations. Bell and Zimmer also considered the kinds of assumptions in applied research that would give rise to each type of conditional independence.
I have searched published texts and papers in probability and statistics for the three types of conditional independence. The type considered by Alfred Renyi [Foundations of Probability …
Chronopotentiometric And Chronoamperometric Investigations Of Uranium (Vi) In Molten Condensed Phosphates, John J. Miglio
Chronopotentiometric And Chronoamperometric Investigations Of Uranium (Vi) In Molten Condensed Phosphates, John J. Miglio
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The diffusion coefficient, D, of U (VI) in molten sodium metaphosphate at 694°C was determined by two independent methods. D was also determined at R values of 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5, where R is the molar M2O to P2O5 ratio and M is univalent. The relative amounts of various phosphate species present in the molten state were determined by thin layer chromatography after rapidly cooling the melt and dissolving the resultant glass in water. With the above information it was hoped to determine if D is independent of the experimental method of …
Calculation Of Potential Functions For Pseudorotation In Five Membered Rings Using Energy Gradients In Extended HüCkel Theory, Thomas Robert Ferguson
Calculation Of Potential Functions For Pseudorotation In Five Membered Rings Using Energy Gradients In Extended HüCkel Theory, Thomas Robert Ferguson
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
The gradient of the energy in extended Hückel theory (EHT) was used in a variable metric algorithm to predict the energy along the pseudorotational path for several five membered ring molecules. The molecules studied were cyclopentane, tetrahydrofuran (THF), cyclopentanol, 4-tetrahydrofuranol, and cis- and trans-3,4-tetrahydrofurandiols. Comparisons of predictions for these molecules to experimental results were made to determine the capabilities of EHT prior to an intended study of sugar rings. A background chapter discusses the recent literature on nucleic acid constituents with emphasis on the geometries of five membered sugar rings. In crystals, these geometries are found to lie mostly in …
The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino
The U. S. Wind Power Program, Joseph M. Savino
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Today I would like to talk about wind energy in, basically, two parts. I would like to bring to your attention some of the developments that have occurred in the 20th century. Many of us who have gone through school in the last 25-30 years don't recall anywhere in our engineering education much information dealing with wind energy, and that may come as a surprise to you as it did to me, to learn how much has actually been done in the 20th century to develop large scale wind-driven machines. After I get through with that introduction I would like …
Alternate Energy Removal Modes For Nuclear Power Reactors, Robert L. Carter
Alternate Energy Removal Modes For Nuclear Power Reactors, Robert L. Carter
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
Attention is focussed upon the unique qualities of high energy fission particles, and upon the fundamental limits to the direct removal of their kinetic energy by electrostatic means and by cyclotron resonance deceleration. Efficiencies of secondary and tertiary product ionization and excitation produced by fission particles are examined. The potential for delivery of power through various non-thermal modes is discussed, and the significant unknowns relating thereto are identified.
