Using the computer as a sub-optimizing tool in the registration of students, however, can cut scheduling time dramatically and relieve the guidance department of an onerous chore. The technique described in this investigation uses a conflict matrix that schedules the student's request and keeps the class load level within the course sections. "The adsorption of dichromate ion with the surfactants, tetradecylpyridinium bromide and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-solution interface was studied by surface tension and turbidity measurements in order to better understand the process of ion flotation. Surface tension measurements were used to study the effect of dichromate ion concentration on precipitation in dilute surfactant solutions. At higher concentration, near and above the cmc, light scattering was used to detect precipitation. The concentration of dichromate required to cause precipitation decreases with increasing surfactant concentration until the erne is approached, after which increasing concentrations of dichromate are required with increasing concentration of surfactant. …

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

"A linear acceleration technique, LAT, is developed which is applied to three conjugate direction algorithms: (1) Fletcher-Reeves algorithm, (2) Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm and (3) Grey's Orthonormal Optimization Procedure (GOOP). Eight problems are solved by the three algorithms mentioned above and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The addition of the LAT algorithm improves the rate of convergence for the GOOP algorithm in all problems attempted and for some problems using the Fletcher-Reeves algorithm and the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm. Using the number of operations to perform function and derivative evaluations, the algorithms mentioned above are compared. Although the GOOP algorithm is relatively unknown outside of the …

"As part of a project directed towards elucidating the characteristics of ligands which coordinate to give complexes having tetrahedral structures, a study of chelates containing the bulky quinuclidine group has been made. With 2-(N-morpholinylmethyl)-3-quinuclidinone (MQN), complexes having the general formula M(MQN)X₂ were prepared where the metal ion was Co(II), Ni(II), Fe(II), Cu(II), and Mn(II). The ligands 2-(N-piperidinylmethyl)-3-quinuclidinone (PQN) and 2-(N-dimethylaminomethyl)-3-quinuclidinone (DQN) were prepared along with the analogous cobalt(II) chloride complexes. The series of complexes Co(MQN)X₂ where X = Cl, Br, or I were prepared, and magnetic susceptibilities and spectral data obtained. They have room temperature magnetic moments in the range …

In the theory of linear statistical models, one frequently encounters consistent systems of linear equations Ax= y. If A is nonsingular then a unique solution is given by x - 1 A y. If A is singular or rectangular however, then there are an infinite number of solutions; and the theory of generalized matrix inverses can be used to generate and characterize the solution set.

This thesis examines properties of generalized matrix inverses, and their use in solving linear equations, and in particular the role they play in treating the concept of estimability.

Glucose-6-P occupies a strategic crossroad position in a variety of carbohydrate metabolic pathways. This hexosephosphate ester may serve as a substrate for glycogen synthesis (1), glycolysis (2), or oxidation through the pentose shunt. This ester may also undergo hydrolysis to form glucose (3). The last process is the terminal reaction in glucose synthesis from gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis and is catalyzed by glucose6-phosphatase.

The crystal structure at room temperature and the low-temperature heat capacity and magnetic susceptibilities of single crystals of [(CH3)3 NH]CuCl3 2H2O are reported. The monoclinic crystals belong to the space group P21c with a=7.479(10), b=7.864(11), c=16.730(23), =91.98(3)°, and Z=4. The structure consists of chains of edge-sharing [CuCl4(OH2)2] octahedra running along the a axis. Each copper atom is coordinated in a square plane by two water molecules and two chlorine atoms, with two more chlorine atoms at a longer distance. The susceptibility data can be fitted adequately between 1.5 and 20°K by a CurieWeiss law [ga=2.080.01, gb=2.020.01; gc=2.110.01; a=(0.380.03)°K, b=(0.360.03)°K, c=(0.410.03)°K], …

Late spring frosts commonly reduce yields and affect the quality of grain in wheat crops, especially in the southern, eastern and north-eastern districts. The damage is usually localised on individual farms, but is sometimes widespread.

Barley, and oats to a lesser extent, are also affected. Average losses of wheat in Western Australia have been estimated at 3 to 5 per cent, per year, or about 2 million bushels on current production figures.
