Juvenile Life Without Parole In Pennsylvania: Age, Cognitive Immaturity, And Culpability, Margaret E. Leigey, Marco Granston May 2024

Juvenile Life Without Parole In Pennsylvania: Age, Cognitive Immaturity, And Culpability, Margaret E. Leigey, Marco Granston

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law

While there has been momentum at both the federal and state levels to curtail extreme punishments for justice-involved juveniles (The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, 2023), 22 states continue to permit the sentence of juvenile life without parole (JLWOP). Pennsylvania is among them. This essay focuses on judicial rationale in five JLWOP re-sentencing cases in the state, and more specifically, how the appellant’s age and implied adult-level culpability were used by the judge to justify permanent incarceration. In the re-sentencing documents, judges neglected the ample research in the areas of neuroscience and developmental psychology that indicates reduced legal …

Digital Currencies And Macroeconomic Performance: A Global Perspective, Tirimisiyu F. Oloko, Ahamuefula E. Ogbonna, Idris A. Adediran

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

In this study, we explore the IS-LM-BP framework in analysing the effect of digital currencies on macroeconomic performance from a global perspective. We augment the global macroeconomic dataset by Mohaddes and Raissi (2020) with digital currencies, and analyse the relationship between 2010Q1 and 2019Q4. Overall, we find digital currencies to have significantly positive short-run and no long-run impact on global output, inflation rate, interest rate, and equity stock return. Our results suggest that digital currencies have enhanced global macroeconomic performance, on average. Thus, we recommend that appropriate regulations, rather than an outright ban on digital currencies, should be implemented.

Towards Non-Intrusive Real-Time Monitoring Of Behind The Meter Residential Distributed Energy Resources, Pranjol Sen Gupta, Yichen Zhang, Mohammad A. Islam, S M Shafiul Alam

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The growing adoption of residential distributed energy resources (DERs) introduces more uncertain variability in power grid operation. More importantly, the residential DERs operate behind customers’ energy meters, and therefore, the utility cannot “directly” monitor them. Prior approaches to enable visibility into behindthe- meter (BTM) DERs either depend on estimations or require intrusive instrumentation on the customer side. To address the critical need for direct real-time monitoring of BTM DERs, in this paper, we propose a novel approach for utility-side direct real-time monitoring of residential BTM DERs. We utilize high-frequency (> 10kHz) conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) from residential DERs’ grid-tied inverters …

Learning On The Go: Elements Of A Mobile Learning Strategy, Matt Hales

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

As a Learning and Development (L&D) professional working within the context of mobile learning, I spend my time addressing the issue of learning on the go. In this paper, I share the concept of a Mobile Learning Strategy canvas, created to assist a more strategic approach to mobile learning by L&D practitioners. I assert that the ongoing evolution of training and development, specifically within the realm of mobile learning, requires specific strategic frameworks to be effective. As work becomes more technical and more complicated, workers benefit more and more from training and development. I explore both strategy as a solitary …

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya May 2024

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Culture is the expression of life that has been held by society for centuries, but it is possible for it to be hijacked by right-wing groups for their own purposes. Since it is an essential component in the formation of collective identities, it is misappropriated by the group to cultivate its ideology and to fragment social cohesion. The case between Indonesia and Germany has been chosen to analyse the similarities of right-wing characters in exploiting culture, including music, through the lens of Margareth Archer's cultural theory and Ulrich Beck's risk society theory, and later compared using Midlarsky’s extremism perspective. …

Endogenous Uncertainty: Does Investment Inefficiency Contributes To Uncertainty?, Rita Juliana, Irwan Adi Ekaputra, Zaäfri Ananto Husodo, Sung Suk Kim

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

We investigate the endogenous relationship between firm-level investments and macro-level uncertainty for U.S publicly listed firms from 1996 Q1 to 2019 Q4. Based on the Vector AutoRegressive analysis, we learn that underinvestment tends to increase news-based Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU); overinvestment increases macroeconomic uncertainty; and both under- and over-investment lead to increasing financial uncertainty. Furthermore, the information flow explanation is closely linked to a positive relationship between underinvestment and EPU. Meanwhile, the positive relationship between overinvestment and macroeconomic uncertainty is related to the excessive growth speculation explanation. The small (large) firm subsample analysis also reiterates the explanation of the information …

Pediatric cancers are frequently driven by genomic alterations that result in aberrant transcription factor activity. Here, we used functional genomic screens to identify multiple genes within the transcriptional coactivator Spt-Ada-Gcn5-acetyltransferase (SAGA) complex as selective dependencies for MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma, a disease of dysregulated development driven by an aberrant oncogenic transcriptional program. We characterized the DNA recruitment sites of the SAGA complex in neuroblastoma and the consequences of loss of SAGA complex lysine acetyltransferase (KAT) activity on histone acetylation and gene expression. We demonstrate that loss of SAGA complex KAT activity is associated with reduced MYCN binding on chromatin, suppression of …

Prediction Accuracy Of Soil Chemical Parameters By Field- And Laboratory-Obtained Vis-Nir Spectra After External Parameter Orthogonalization, Konrad Metzger, Frank Liebisch, Juan M Herrera, Thomas Guillaume, Luca Bragazza

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

One challenge in predicting soil parameters using in situ visible and near infrared spectroscopy is the distortion of the spectra due to soil moisture. External parameter orthogonalization (EPO) is a mathematical method to remove unwanted variability from spectra. We created two different EPO correction matrices based on the difference between spectra collected in situ and, respectively, spectra collected from the same soil samples after drying and sieving and after drying, sieving and finely grinding. Spectra from 134 soil samples recorded with two different spectrometers were split into calibration and validation sets and the two EPO corrections were applied. Clay, organic …

Charting A Path To The Quintuple Aim: Harnessing Ai To Address Social Determinants Of Health, Yash Shah, Zachary Goldberg, Erika Harness, David Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

The Quintuple Aim seeks to improve healthcare by addressing social determinants of health (SDOHs), which are responsible for 70-80% of medical outcomes. SDOH-related concerns have traditionally been addressed through referrals to social workers and community-based organizations (CBOs), but these pathways have had limited success in connecting patients with resources. Given that health inequity is expected to cost the United States nearly USD 300 billion by 2050, new artificial intelligence (AI) technology may aid providers in addressing SDOH. In this commentary, we present our experience with using ChatGPT to obtain SDOH management recommendations for archetypal patients in Philadelphia, PA. ChatGPT identified …

Machine Learning Based Analysis Of Civil Infrastructure In The Presence Of Sparse Data, Megan Butcher

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The high computational cost of estimating engineering demand parameters (EDPs) via finite element (FE) models, which incorporate uncertainties in earthquake events and material properties, limits the application of the Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) framework. Previous efforts to replace FE models with surrogate models have typically focused only on building parameters, necessitating re-training for new, unseen earthquakes. This paper introduces a machine learning-based surrogate model framework that addresses both earthquake and material parameter uncertainties to predict responses for unseen seismic events. Earthquakes are characterized by their projections on an orthonormal basis, computed using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of a representative ground …

The Impact Of Age On Second Language Vocabulary Learning, Steven J. Dessenberger May 2024

The Impact Of Age On Second Language Vocabulary Learning, Steven J. Dessenberger

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Second language (L2) vocabulary learning is challenging for many would-be language learners, regardless of their cognitive abilities. The volume of to be learned vocabulary can be a roadblock to language fluency (Nation, 2006), especially for older adults who have diminished memory capabilities due to age-related memory decline, a degradation in our ability to remember information that naturally occurs as we age (Salthouse, 2009; Schaie, 1993). The process of L2 vocabulary acquisition can be separated into three components, the native language (L1) meaning of the new word (cat), the new L2 word form itself (gato) and the connection between the new …
