Fate Of Nitrogen From The Disposal Of Poultry Litter: A Simulation Approach, B. A. Ibrahim, H D. Scott

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A computer program was written to simulate the transport of nitrogen after an application of poultry litter to a pasture. The program was written in FORTRAN 77 to run on an IBM PC/AT or compatible personal computer or on a Sun SPARCSTATION. Simulation of water, solute and heat transport was by finite difference. Partition of rainfall into infiltration and runoff was by the SCS curve number method. A comparison was made of the computer model output with the results of a field experiment established at the Main Agricultural Experiment Station at Fayetteville. Poultry litter was applied at a rate of …

Intercellular Structure In A Many-Celled Magnetotactic Prokaryote, Frank G. Rodgers, Richard P. Blakemore, Nancy A. Blakemore, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Denise Maratea, Christine Rodgers Jun 1990

Intercellular Structure In A Many-Celled Magnetotactic Prokaryote, Frank G. Rodgers, Richard P. Blakemore, Nancy A. Blakemore, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Denise Maratea, Christine Rodgers

Physics

A many-called magnetotactic prokaryote obtained from brackish water was observed to possess intercellular connections at points of contact between the outer membranes of constituent cells. Each aggregate organism consisted of 10 to 30 individual Gram-negative cells containing material with the appearance of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate and magnetosomes of unusual arrangement, structure and composition. The aggregate, which possessed prokaryotic-type flagella arranged at the outwards surfaces of each cell, showed motility indicative of co-ordination between individual component cells. These results suggest that this organism could be a multicellular prokaryote.

Coke Oven Emissions: A Case Study Of Technology-Based Regulation, John D. Graham, David R. Holtgrave

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

After examining and analyzing the experience with coke ovens, the authors conclude that attempts to force technology beyond its demonstrated competence can be both expensive and ineffective in controlling hazards. They also suggest implications for pending proposals to further control air pollution.

Geology Of The Butler Basin, Grant And Wheeler Counties, Central Oregon, Martin R. Aguirre Jun 1990

Geology Of The Butler Basin, Grant And Wheeler Counties, Central Oregon, Martin R. Aguirre

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Butler Basin lies along the John Day River in Central Oregon, astraddle the boundary of Wheeler and Grant counties. Strata exposed in this geomorphic basin, formed by an erosionally breached anticline, range in age from Permo-Triassic to Neogene. The basement rocks of the basin are poorly exposed but lithologically similar to the Permo-Triassic Blue Mountains island-arc rocks which crop out to the south and southeast of the basin in the John Day Inlier. Overlying the basement rocks are Early Cretaceous conglomerates with lenses of sandstone and siltstone informally named the "Goose Rock Conglomerate." Pebble and cobble lithologies present in …

Impacts Of Treated Municipal Waste-Waters On Development And Growth Of Hudson-Raritan Estuary Fishes, Chien-Min Chen May 1990

Impacts Of Treated Municipal Waste-Waters On Development And Growth Of Hudson-Raritan Estuary Fishes, Chien-Min Chen

Theses

The Hudson—Raritan Estuary, known as one of the worst polluted estuaries in the world, receives pollutants from many point sources. Treated municipal wastewater (TMW) counts for 13% of its total freshwater input and more than 98% of the chemicals classified as priority pollutants been infused. Because of the complexity of the input, treatment facilities cannot remove toxicants efficiently. In addition, generation of new compounds by water treatment such as chlorination occurs. Batch-to-batch variability in the chemistry of this effluent was reflected in the early life stage toxicity bioassays using mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) embryos.

TMW has …

Cascading Of Arithematic Coding Method With The Lzw Algorithm, Venkat R. Maram, Nageshwar R. Kadakuntla May 1990

Cascading Of Arithematic Coding Method With The Lzw Algorithm, Venkat R. Maram, Nageshwar R. Kadakuntla

Theses

Two known compression algorithms appropriate for communication are the LZW algorithm and the Arithmetic Coding method. Both algorithms are adaptive and require no extra communication from the encoder to the decoder. We present a scheme to cascade these algorithms into an adaptive algorithm which achieves higher compression ratio and is appropriate for communication.

Mars And Beyond: The Solar System Beckons, Frank J. Redd May 1990

Mars And Beyond: The Solar System Beckons, Frank J. Redd

Faculty Honor Lectures

To space zealots, 1989 was the year the drought ended. The space shuttle was operational again; Voyager's grand reconnaissance of the Solar System climaxed with the glorious encounter with the planet Neptune and its startling moon, Triton; the launches of the Magellan spacecraft to Venus and the Gallileo to Jupiter broke a decade long hiatus in the launch of U.S. planetary missions; and, for the first time in over twenty years, a U.S. president announced a daring new initiative in human exploration with the goal of first returning humans to the Moon, then going on to Mars.

Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of A Late-Holocene Subfossil Coleopteran Fauna From Starks, Maine, Heather A. Hall

Senior Scholar Papers

The Sandy River in central Maine Is flanked along much of its length by low terraces. Approximately 100 kg of sediment from one terrace in Starks, Somerset County, Maine was wet-sieved in the field. Over 1100 subfossil Coleoptera were recovered representing 53 individual species of a total of 99 taxa. Wood associated with the fauna is 2000 +/-80 14C Yr in age (1-16,038). The fauna is dominated by species characteristic of habitats apparent in modern central Maine. The subfossil assemblage is indicative of a wide vartety of environments including open ground (e.g., Harpalus pensylvanicus), dense forest (e.g., pterostichus honestus), aquatic …

A Neural Network Simulator For The Connnection Machine, N. Asokan, Ravi V. Shankar, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra, Sanjay Ranka May 1990

A Neural Network Simulator For The Connnection Machine, N. Asokan, Ravi V. Shankar, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra, Sanjay Ranka

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

In this paper we describe the design, development, and performance of a neural network simulator for the Connection Machine (CM)3. The design of the simulator is based on the Rochester Connectionist Simulator(RCS). RCS is a simulator for connectionist networks developed at the University of Rochester. The CM simulator can be used as a stand-alone system or as a high-performance parallel back-end to RCS. In the latter case, once the network has been built by RCS, the high-performance parallel back-end system constructs an equivalent network on the CM processor array and executes it. The CM simulator facilitates the exploitation of the …

Dynamic Range Partitioning In Multiprocessor Database Implementations, Ophir Frieder May 1990

Dynamic Range Partitioning In Multiprocessor Database Implementations, Ophir Frieder

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Multiprocessor implementation of the relational database operators has recently received great attention in literature [1-4, 8, 11]. As the complexity of implementing the relational operators rests on the inter-node communication patterns involved in an operation, greater research attention has been focused on Join algorithms. The Join traffic patterns subsume those of the remaining relational operators. To effectively exploit parallelism in bucket based join implementations, the domain of the joining attributes must be partitioned into equal subranges. That is, the processing of each subrange requires roughly the same amount of time. A skewed distribution of workload significantly hinders performance. As relations …

Rate Equation And Scaling For Fragmentation With Mass Loss, Boyd F. Edwards, M. Cai, H. Han May 1990

Rate Equation And Scaling For Fragmentation With Mass Loss, Boyd F. Edwards, M. Cai, H. Han

All Physics Faculty Publications

A linear rate equation describes fragmentation with continuous and discrete mass loss typified by consumption of porous reactive solids and two-phase heterogeneous solids. For a mass-dependent fragmentation rate xα and a continuous-mass-loss rate εxγ,σ=γ-α-1<0 yields a>‘‘recession regime’’ where small particles lose mass continuously without breaking, σ>0 yields a ‘‘fragmentation regime’’ where all particles break, and σ=0 yields scaling for α>0. Shattering for α<0 and>σ≥0 is runaway fragmentation producing an infinte number of particles in a finite time, Exact and asymptotic solutions, exponent relations, and connections with static percolation are found.

Optical Switching And Routing Architectures For Fiber-Optic Computer Communication Networks, Alok Choudhary, Salim Hariri, Wang Song, Partha Banerjee, Sanjay Ranka May 1990

Optical Switching And Routing Architectures For Fiber-Optic Computer Communication Networks, Alok Choudhary, Salim Hariri, Wang Song, Partha Banerjee, Sanjay Ranka

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Optical technology has become a significant part of communication networks. We propose an Optical Interface Message Processor (OPTIMP) that exploits high-bandwidth, parallelism, multi-dimensional capability, and high storage density offered by optics. The most time consuming operations such as switching and routing in communication networks are performed in optical domain in the proposed system. Our design does not suffer from the optical/electrical conversion bottlenecks and can perform switching and routing in the range of Gigabits/s. The proposed design can have significant impact in high-speed communication networks as well as high-speed interconnection networks for parallel computers. The source-destination (S-D) information from a …

Measuring Δh Using Dsc, Tga & Dta, Roland Hoffman May 1990

Measuring Δh Using Dsc, Tga & Dta, Roland Hoffman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to obtain greater accuracy in the measurement of the heat of reaction by combining data from various thermal analysis techniques. Conventional equations that calculate heat of reaction are limited because they do not take in to account mass change. Therefore, an enhanced equation was developed to integrate mass (weight) change to provide greater accuracy. The path chosen to implement this new equation employed simultaneous Thermogravimetric / Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA) that could provide both ΔT and weight data simultaneously. Computer programs were written in C and Pascal languages to provide communication capabilities between computers …

Infrared-Absorption Of Deep Defects In Molecular-Beam-Epitaxial Gaas-Layers Grown At 200°C - Observation Of An El(2)-Like Defect, M. O. Manasreh, David C. Look, K. R. Evans

Physics Faculty Publications

Infrared optical absorption and Hall-effect techniques were employed to study deep defects in As-rich molecular-beam-epitaxial GaAs layers grown at very low temperature (200°C). A large ir absorption band was observed between 0.55 eV and the band edge. This band is composed of photoquenchable and photounquenchable components. Photoquenching, thermal recovery from the metastable state, and ir absorption properties of the quenchable defect, of estimated concentration ~3x1018 cm-3, are identical to those of EL2. On the other hand, the unquenchable defect, of estimated concentration ~3x1019 cm-3, resembles the isolated AsGa, antisite observed in …

Enhancement And Monitoring Of The Procambarus Clarkii Population In Lake Mead, Mikell Beth Hager May 1990

Enhancement And Monitoring Of The Procambarus Clarkii Population In Lake Mead, Mikell Beth Hager

Publications (WR)

Procambarus clarkii are found in extremely low numbers throughout Lake Mead, AZ-NV. The crayfish are an important dietary component for game fish. Enhancement of the crayfish population would broaden the fishery forage base. Crayfish were stocked and monitored in a study cove on Saddle Island to determine if the Procambarus clarkii population could be enhanced. A trapping survey of the area after the following reproductive season yielded low numbers of crayfish. A comparison of pre-stocking and post-stocking catch per trap day (CPTD) values revealed no significant increase in the population. Procambarus clarkii growth is limited by environmental factors in Lake …

A Root Finding Algorithm For Parallel Architecture Machines, Stuti Moitra May 1990

A Root Finding Algorithm For Parallel Architecture Machines, Stuti Moitra

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a parallel algorithm for determining the zeros of any given analytic function is described. Parallelism is achieved by modifying the traditional bisection algorithm for architecture machines.

Given any user supplied function f(X), continuous on the interval Ao ≤ x ≤ B0, and the tolerance of accuracy an algorithm of determining up to ten roots, with error of approximation less than or equal to tolerance, on parallel systems like Distributed Array Processor (OAP) and N-cube is considered.

A variation of the bisection method has been adapted for this purpose. At each level of iteration a …
