Management Of Human-Raccoon Interaction In The Midst Of A Race Rabies Outbreak, Charles V. Trimarchi, John G. Debbie Feb 1991

Management Of Human-Raccoon Interaction In The Midst Of A Race Rabies Outbreak, Charles V. Trimarchi, John G. Debbie

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

The rabies epizootic that had affected raccoon (Procyon lotor) populations in the southeastern United States since the mid-1950s jumped to West Virginia in 1977, the apparent result of importation of raccoons from Florida. During the following 14 years, the disease spread through raccoon populations in the mid-Atlantic states, so that by early 1991 infected raccoons had been identified in areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Although raccoons have remained the primary vector of the disease throughout the affected areas, spillover has occurred into other wildlife, including skunks …

Perspectives On Wildlife Nuisance Control: Results Of A Wildlife Damage Control Firm's Customer Survey, Lynn A. Braband, Kevin D. Clark

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Customers of Critter Control, Ins, offices were surveyed in 1990 and 1991 to examine their views and experience nuisance wildlife. Most of the survey respondents were having problems with raccoons (Procyon lotor), squirrels (Sciurus), skunks (Mephitis mephitis), woodchucks (Marmata monax), and moles (Talpidae). Approximately 25% of the respective attempted to control the nuisance situation themselves before contacting Critter Control. Most customers approved of the control of rats/mice (Muridae), moles, snakes, bats (Chiroptera), pigeons (Columba livia), and skunks. Most disapproves lethal control of deer (Odocoileus spp. ), geese (Branta …

Data for high-interest species groups were sorted according to site, time of day, and month. Raptors were present at the airport and landfill throughout the year. …

The Jovian Ionospheric E Region, Y. H. Kim, Jane L. Fox Feb 1991

The Jovian Ionospheric E Region, Y. H. Kim, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

We have constructed a model of the Jovian ionosphere that includes direct photoionization of hydrocarbon molecules. A high resolution solar spectrum was synthesized from Hinteregger's solar maximum spectrum (F79050N) and high resolution cross sections for photoabsorption by H2 bands in the range 842 to 1116 Å were constructed. Two strong solar lines and about 30% of the continuum flux between 912 and 1116 Å penetrate below the methane homopause despite strong absorption by CH4 and H2. We find that hydrocarbons (mainly C2H2) are ionized at a maximum rate of 55 cm−3 …

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectrometry Study Of Conjugate Shakeup Processes In The Li 1s Threshold Region, B. Langer, J. Viefhaus, Oliver Hemmers, A. Menzel, U. Becker

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Partial cross sections and angular-distribution asymmetry parameters of diagram and satellite lines associated with Li 1s photoionization were measured using synchrotron-radiation excitation. Special emphasis was given to a high-resolution study of the 1P and 3P conjugate shakeup satellite lines testing qualitative predictions of the conjugate shakeup model: increasing σ and decreasing β values towards threshold, both being verified. Comparison with recent relaxed Hartree-Fock calculations shows good agreement for the 1P satellite, but demonstrates also that the present theory does not seem to be able to describe the cross-section behavior of the 3P satellite correctly.

A Practical Hierarchial Model Of Parallel Computation: The Model, Todd Heywood, Sanjay Ranka Feb 1991

A Practical Hierarchial Model Of Parallel Computation: The Model, Todd Heywood, Sanjay Ranka

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

We introduce a model of parallel computation that retains the ideal properties of the PRAM by using it as a sub-model, while simultaneously being more reflective of realistic parallel architectures by accounting for and providing abstract control over communication and synchronization costs. The Hierarchical PRAM (H-PRAM) model controls conceptual complexity in the face of asynchrony in two ways. First, by providing the simplifying assumption of synchronization to the design of algorithms, but allowing the algorithms to work asynchronously with each other; and organizing this "control asynchrony" via an implicit hierarchy relation. Second, by allowing the restriction of "communication asynchrony" in …

An Analysis Of East Pond And The Serpentine Watersheds In Relation To Water Quality, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: East and North Ponds (2011, 1999, 1996, 1991)

The Belgrade Lakes in central Maine are important local ecological and recreational resources. The belgrade chain includes the following lakes: East Pond, North Pond, Great Pond, Long Pond, Salmon Lake and Messalonskee Lake. These lakes are all interconnected within the system driving into the Kennebec River through the Messalonskee Stream (Garrity and Putnam, 1971). East Pond is the first lake in the lake chain and it plays a pivotal role in influencing subsequent lakes. Therefore, the water quality of this lake is important not only to East Pond residents but to the residents of the entire lakes region.

Scatter Scheduling For Problems With Unpredictable Structures, Min-You Wu, Wei Shu

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

An extended scatter scheduling was applied to problems with unpredictable, asynchronous structures. It has been found that with this simple scheduling strategy, good load balance can be reached without incurring much runtime overhead. This scheduling algorithm has been implemented on hypercube machines, and its performance is compared with other scheduling strategies.

Ground Water Quality And Management In Minnesota, Jeanette H. Leete Jan 1991

Ground Water Quality And Management In Minnesota, Jeanette H. Leete

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Minnesota is known for its abundant surface water - lakes, rivers, and streams - and much emphasis is placed on managing these priceless resources, yet it is ground water that supplies drinking water to about 75 percent of the state's population, and ground water that agriculture depends on for 88 percent of irrigation water. While ground water quality can be and is impacted by activities at the land surface, the greatest proportion of Minnesota's ground water is still suitable for most uses.

Over 175 units and several levels of government are involved in water resource protection and planning. Choices are …

On A Lower Bound For The Redundancy Of Reliable Networks With Noisy Gates, Nicholas Pippenger Jan 1991

On A Lower Bound For The Redundancy Of Reliable Networks With Noisy Gates, Nicholas Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A proof is provided that a logarithmic redundancy factor is necessary for the reliable computation of the parity function by means of a network with noisy gates. This result was first stated by R.L. Dobrushin and S.I. Ortyukov (1977). However, the authors believe that the analysis given by Dobrushin and Ortyukov is not entirely correct. The authors establish the result by following the same steps and by replacing the questionable part of their analysis with entirely new arguments.

Observation Of Eliminative Cationic Polymerization Within Van Der Waals Clusters, M. Samy El-Shall, K. E. Schriver

Chemistry Publications

We report the first observation of eliminative cationic polymerization within van der Waals (vdW) clusters following electron impact ionization at pressures of 10−8 Torr. The elimination reactions of C2H3Cl+ within the clusters terminate after three successive steps, each involving elimination of HCl or Cl. The results provide a mechanism for the early stages of gas phase cationic polymerization of vinyl chloride and demonstrate the feasibility of using vdW clusters as a means of studying gas phase cationic polymerization.

An upper bound asymptotic to $2n\log _e n$ is established for the number of comparators required in a network that classifies $n$ values into two classes, each containing $n / 2$ values, with each value in one class less than or equal to each value in the other. (The best lower bound known for this problem is asymptotic to $(n / 2)\log _2 n$.)

Field-Aligned Current Associated With A Distorted Two-Cell Convection Pattern During Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1991

Field-Aligned Current Associated With A Distorted Two-Cell Convection Pattern During Northward Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

A systematic study of the influence of the ionospheric conductance on the field-aligned current associated with a distorted two-cell convection pattern during northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been conducted. Our modeling results indicate that the NBZ current can be associated with the distorted two-cell convection for most of the ionospheric conductivity conditions. It is shown that the conductivity conditions related to the seasonal variation and the aurora activity can significantly influence the basic features of the field-aligned current associated with a distorted two-cell convection pattern. It is found that the increase of the field-aligned current in the polar cap …

Performance Prediction For Distributed Load Balancing On Multicomputer Systems, Ishfaq Ahmed, Arif Ghafoor, Kishan Mehrotra Jan 1991

Performance Prediction For Distributed Load Balancing On Multicomputer Systems, Ishfaq Ahmed, Arif Ghafoor, Kishan Mehrotra

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

This paper presents a performance evaluation approach to compare different distributed load balancing schemes on a unified basis. This approach is an integration of simulation, statistical and analytical models, and takes into account the fundamental system parameters that can possibly affect the performance. We show that all the sender-initiated distributed load balancing strategies can be modeled by a central server open queuing network. Furthermore, these load balancing strategies can be characterized by only two queuing parameters – the average execution queue length and the probability that a newly arrived task is executed locally or migrated to another node. To capture …

Optimal Parallel Lexicographic Sorting Using A Fine-Grained Decomposition, Ramachandran Vaidyanathan, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Pramod Varshney Jan 1991

Optimal Parallel Lexicographic Sorting Using A Fine-Grained Decomposition, Ramachandran Vaidyanathan, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Pramod Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Though non-comparison based sorting techniques like radix sorting can be done with less "work" than conventional comparison-based methods, they are not used for long keys. This is because even though parallel radix sorting algorithms process the keys in parallel, the symbols in the keys are processed sequentially. In this report, we give an optimal algorithm for lexicographic sorting that can be used to sort n m-bit keys on an EREW model in Ө (log nlogm) time with Ө (mn) "work". This algorithm is not only as fast as any optimal non-comparison based algorithm, but can also be executed with less …

In Vitro Assembly Of Apophytochrome And Apophytochrome Deletion Mutants Expressed In Yeast With Phycocyanobilin, Lily Deforce, Ken-Ichi Tomizawa, Naoko Ito, Dave Farrens, Pill-Soon Song, Masaki Furuya Jan 1991

In Vitro Assembly Of Apophytochrome And Apophytochrome Deletion Mutants Expressed In Yeast With Phycocyanobilin, Lily Deforce, Ken-Ichi Tomizawa, Naoko Ito, Dave Farrens, Pill-Soon Song, Masaki Furuya

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Recombinant pea type I phytochrome apoprotein expressed in yeast is shown to assemble in vitro with phycocyanobilin to produce a photoreversible phytochromelike adduct. As an initial investigation of the amino acid sequence requirements for chromophore incorporation, three phyA gene product deletion mutants were produced in yeast. Truncation of the N-terminal tail to residue 46 demonstrates that this region is not critical to bilin attachment, but a deletion mutant lacking 222 amino acids from the N terminus failed to yield holophytochrome in vitro, under the same conditions. A mutant comprising a deletion of the C terminus to residue 548 …
