On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth Apr 1991

On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The main difficulty in enforcing global serializability in a multidatabase environment lies in resolving indirect transitive conflicts between multidatabase transactions. Indirect conflicts introduced by local transactions are difficult to resolve because the behavior or even the existence of local transactions is not known to the multidatabase system. To overcome these problems, we propose to incorporate additional data manipulation operations in the subtransactions of each multidatabase transaction. We show that if these operations create direct conflicts between subtransactions at each participating local database system, indirect conflicts can be resolved even if the multidatabase system is not aware of their existence. Based …

Flotation Data Sampling Strategies In Archaeological Research: An Experiment At The Elam Site (20ae195), Allegan County, Michigan, Brian David Deroo Apr 1991

Flotation Data Sampling Strategies In Archaeological Research: An Experiment At The Elam Site (20ae195), Allegan County, Michigan, Brian David Deroo

Masters Theses

Studies of prehistoric Native American subsistence patterns have benefited greatly from data recovered through the technique of flotation, which allows investigators to recover small scale organic remains which would otherwise be missed using standard excavation procedures. Using data recovered through flotation researchers have been able to more fairly evaluate the role of plant foods, both wild and cultivated, in the aboriginal diet.

A common method of obtaining a flotation sample is to define a column through the center of the cultural feature or midden and removing a specified volume of soil matrix (usually 10 liters) from this column. This thesis …

The Paleoethnobotany Of Schwerdt (20ae127): An Early Fifteenth Century Encampment In The Lower Kalamazoo River Valley, Gregory R. Walz Apr 1991

The Paleoethnobotany Of Schwerdt (20ae127): An Early Fifteenth Century Encampment In The Lower Kalamazoo River Valley, Gregory R. Walz

Masters Theses

Carbonized macrobotanical remains from the Schwerdt Site, an Upper Mississippian sturgeon fishery in the Lower Kalamazoo River Valley are identified and analyzed in terms of their implications for localized subsistence-settlement systems operating during the Berrien Phase in southwestern Michigan. The exploitation of wild plant foods at this limited-activity, spring sturgeon fishery and the environmental composition of the site environs are reconstructed from their representation in flotation samples derived from excavated feature and midden contexts.

Botanical data indicate a strong wetland-aquatic orientation in plant procurement, with aquatic tubers being the primary plant resource exploited at the site. Data from several sites …

Simulated Annealing On The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Kevin Alons Apr 1991

Simulated Annealing On The Composite Graph Coloring Problem, Kevin Alons

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The composite graph is a finite undirected graph G with no loops and no multiple edges and with positive integers associated with each vertex of G. The number of integers associated with each vertex is the chromaticity of the vertex. The chromatic degree of a vertex v is the sum of the chromaticity of v and the chromaticities of all vertices adjacent to v. The graph G is a v-composite graph if the chromaticities are not equal.

An Overview And Evaluation: Computer Software To Aid Students In Prewriting, Writing, And Revision, Mary Lou Shomaker

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The research on computer software to aid inexperienced writers was done from May, 1990 through August, 1990, and involved examining software that would help students improve their writing. The softwares also were evaluated according to their value for use in computer assisted writing classes. The project had three objectives: 1) to evaluate software designed to aid the writer in the pre-writing, writing, and revising stages; 2) to identify the components of this type of software; 3) to recommend software for the beginning academic writer.

Mathematica Calculus Illustrations, Jeremy Squires Apr 1991

Mathematica Calculus Illustrations, Jeremy Squires

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The purpose of this project was to create a collection of computer illustrations that would represent certain concepts of calculus. These illustrations were to be performed on a calculus based program called Mathematica. Another of the underlying objectives of this project was the potential of using these illustrations as classroom demonstrations. These demonstrations might convey an idea that is not easily understood on just verbal communication alone.

Biological Effectiveness Of High-Energy Protons: Target Fragmentation, Francis A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, Ferenc Hajnal Apr 1991

Biological Effectiveness Of High-Energy Protons: Target Fragmentation, Francis A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, Ferenc Hajnal

Robert Katz Publications

High-energy protons traversing tissue produce local sources of high-linear-energy-transfer (LET) ions through nuclear fragmentation. We examine the contribution of these target fragments to the biological effectiveness of high-energy protons using the cellular track model. The effects of secondary ions are treated in terms of the production collision density using energy-dependent parameters from a high-energy fragmentation model. Calculations for mammalian cell cultures show that at high dose, at which intertrack effects become important, protons deliver damage similar to that produced by γ rays, and with fragmentation the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons increases moderately from unity. At low dose, where …

Simulator For Concurrent Processing Data Flow Architectures, Mahyar R. Malekpour Apr 1991

Simulator For Concurrent Processing Data Flow Architectures, Mahyar R. Malekpour

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A software simulator capable of simulating execution of an algorithm graph on a given system under the Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model (ATAMM) rules is presented in this thesis. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large-grained algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. Investigating the behavior and determining the performance of an ATAMM based system requires the aid of software tools. The ATAMM Simulator presented in this thesis is capable of determining the behavior, performance, and reliability of a system without having to build a hardware prototype. Case studies are performed on four algorithms to demonstrate the capabilities of …

Third‐Order, Nonlinear Optical Interactions Of Some Benzporphyrins, D.V.G.L.N. Rao, Francisco J. Aranda, Joseph F. Roach, David E. Remy

Physics Faculty Publications

We measured third‐order, nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) for a series of tetrabenzporphyrins in solution in tetrahydrofuran at 532 nm using degenerate four‐wave mixing with picosecond pulses and obtained values of molecular second hyperpolarizability 〈γ〉. The corresponding macroscopic χ(3) values calculated for nine compounds with different substituent groups are four to five orders larger than CS2. For five of the compounds the χ(3) values are in the range 1.2–2.8×10−8 esu. Our experiments indicate that the nonlinearity is predominately electronic in origin with a response time faster than the 15 ps resolution of our system.

Multiphoton Ionization Of Nitrobenzene In Non-Aqueous Solutions: Characterization Of The Cation And Ion-Molecule Chemistry, G. Siuzdak, J. J. Belbruno

Dartmouth Scholarship

The phenoxy cation has been generated in polar and nonpolar solutions by multiphoton ionization of nitrobenzene using nanosecond pulses of 266 nm and 355 nm light. The ions have been characterized by pulsed conductivity (ion mobility) measurements and transient absorption spectroscopy. The involvement of the phenoxy ion in ion-molecule chemistry with either neutral solute or solvent molecules has also been observed and the photochemical products and quantum yields of the ion-molecule products are presented and compared with the neutral photochemistry results.

Nonadiabatic Electronic Interactions In The Ion-Pair States Of Nelcl, Thomas Alex Stephenson, Y. Hong, M. I. Lester Mar 1991

Nonadiabatic Electronic Interactions In The Ion-Pair States Of Nelcl, Thomas Alex Stephenson, Y. Hong, M. I. Lester

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Nonadiabatic interactions in the NeIC1 van der Waals complex have been explored in the lowest energy triad of IC1 ion-pair states (approximately 39 000 cm-1). Dispersed fluorescence measurements reveal emission characteristic of multiple ion-pair electronic states, with the relative contributions from the E(O+ ), beta(1), and D'(2) states changing with the initial IC1 vibrational excitation (v(IC1)). Emission directly from NeIC1 (v(IC1) = O) complexes indicates that the initially prepared NeIC1 levels have mixed electronic character and that the IC1 electronic parentage changes with the initial van der Waals vibrational level selected. NeIC1 complexes prepared with 1-4 quanta of IC1 stretch …

Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer Mar 1991

Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

There are several guides to good mathematical writing for professionals, but few for undergraduates. Yet undergraduates who write mathematics papers need special guidance. For instance, professionals may need help writing clear definitions, but at least they know why explicit definitions are needed and know the basic format. In general, mathematics has many special formats that are not mere technical conventions but instead serve important purposes. Often students are not conscious of these conventions, and they rarely know their purposes. This paper contains a guide for students written in light of these observations.

Polarized X-Ray-Emission Studies Of Methyl Chloride And The Chlorofluoromethanes, Dennis W. Lindle, P. L. Cowan, T. Jach, R. E. Lavilla, R. D. Deslattes, Rupert C. Perera Mar 1991

Polarized X-Ray-Emission Studies Of Methyl Chloride And The Chlorofluoromethanes, Dennis W. Lindle, P. L. Cowan, T. Jach, R. E. Lavilla, R. D. Deslattes, Rupert C. Perera

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

A new technique sensitive to molecular orientation and geometry, and based on measuring the polarization of x-ray emission, has been applied to the Cl-containing molecules methyl chloride (CH3Cl) and the chlorofluoromethanes (CF3Cl, CF2Cl2, and CFCl3) in the gas phase. Upon selective excitation using monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the Cl K-edge (Cl 1s) near-threshold region, polarization-selective x-ray emission studies reveal highly polarized molecular valence x-ray fluorescence for all four molecules. The degree and the orientation of the polarized emission are observed to be sensitive to the incident excitation energy near …

Intercellular Junctions, Motility, And Magnetosome Structure In A Multicellular Magnetotactic Prokaryote, Frank G. Rodgers, Richard P. Blakemore, Nancy A. Blakemore, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Denise Maratea, Christine Rodgers

Physics

A many-celled, magnetotactic, prokaryote obtained from brackish water possessed intercellular connections at points of contact between the outer membranes of constituent cells. These connections structurally resembled the "gap junctions" found in eukaryotes. Each aggregate organism consisted of 10 to 30 individual gram-negative cells containing material with the appearance of poly-𝛽-hydroxybutyrate and magnetosomes of unusual arrangement, structure and composition. The aggregate, which possessed prokaryotic-type flagella arranged at the outward surfaces of each cell, showed motility indicative of coordination between individual component cells. These results suggest that this organism is a multicellular prokaryote.

Optimal Iterative Task Scheduling For Parallel Simulations, Joann M. Sartor Mar 1991

Optimal Iterative Task Scheduling For Parallel Simulations, Joann M. Sartor

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate purpose of this research is to reduce the time needed for execution of parallel computer simulations. In particular, the impact of task assignment strategies is determined for parallel VHDL circuit simulations. The classical scheduling problem, which assigns n precedence-constrained tasks to m processors is NP-complete in all but the simplest cases. The problem of assigning simulation tasks is further complicated by the iterative nature of computer simulations: each task is required to execute multiple times as the simulation executes. This investigation develops a polynomial-time algorithm (the level strategy) which provides optimal assignment for iterative systems with specific constraints. …

A Computer Simulation Of Braitenberg Vehicles, Eric B. Werkowitz Mar 1991

A Computer Simulation Of Braitenberg Vehicles, Eric B. Werkowitz

Theses and Dissertations

In his treatise, Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology, Valentino Braitenberg used simple, autonomous vehicle designs to illustrate the principles behind animal nervous system organization and operation. The goal of this effort was to produce a computer program to allow a researcher to experiment with these concepts and to analyze their performance using methods employed by experimental psychologists. The resulting program allows the user to design vehicles that respond to changes in their environments and that have the ability to adapt their behavior, using a learning algorithm developed by Teuvo Kohonen. The vehicle designer is free to select sensor attributes, …

A Network Flow And Goal Programming Approach To Modeling The Impact Of Pre-Accession Training To The Trained Personnel Requirements Process, William J. Beveridge Mar 1991

A Network Flow And Goal Programming Approach To Modeling The Impact Of Pre-Accession Training To The Trained Personnel Requirements Process, William J. Beveridge

Theses and Dissertations

HQ ATC was tasked to analyze the impact of pre-accession training to the Trained Personnel Required (TPR) and training production process. Pre- accession training is a policy of providing contracted initial skills training to enlistees prior to entering basic military training. The purpose of this study was to develop a method to model the impact of pre-accession training. A network modeling and goal programming approach was used. Comparisons between the current training policy and a pre-accession training policy were made. Sensitivity was conducted on the impact of a balk rate on the new policy. The balk rate is the percent …

Fkb1 Encodes A Nonessential Fk 506-Binding Protein In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae And Contains Regions Suggesting Homology To The Cyclophilins, Gregory Wiederrecht, Leonardo Brizuela, Keith Elliston, Nolan H. Sigal, John Siekierka

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

FK 506, a powerful immunosuppressant that blocks allograft rejection by preventing T-cell activation, binds to an 11-kDa protein called the FK 506-binding protein (FKBP). Like cyclophilin, a cytosolic protein that binds another immunosuppressant, cyclosporin A, FKBP possesses peptidylprolyl cis-trans isomerase activity. We have isolated a genomic clone encoding the yeast FKBP (FKB1). The gene encodes a protein of 114 amino acids having a calculated M(r) of 12,158. Disruption of the gene shows that FKB1 is not essential for growth. A search of translated nucleic acid data bases revealed bacterial FKBP homologs in Neisseria meningiditis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Comparison of the …

Wildlife Damage Education And College Curricula, James Caslick Feb 1991

Wildlife Damage Education And College Curricula, James Caslick

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

University students, particularly those enrolled in natural resources programs, make up one of the smallest, yet potentially most important and influential audiences for wildlife damage professionals. Considering that these students will be tomorrow's natural resources technicians, biologists, and administrators, I feel that it is critical that we provide them factual information about wildlife damage to increase their awareness of potential problems and solutions, and increase their ability to make well-informed decisions.

An important aspect of education is accurate audience identification and association. This is not an easy task, however, as today's audience is collectively a moving target. Once primarily rural …
