Visionglow: Evaluating Minimal-Disruption Smart-Home Control In Apple Vision Pro, Hongxiao Zheng Dec 2025

Visionglow: Evaluating Minimal-Disruption Smart-Home Control In Apple Vision Pro, Hongxiao Zheng

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Smart-home control in mixed-reality environments like Apple Vision Pro often relies on disruptive, application-based paradigms, such as using a smartphone or a windowed virtual interface. These methods create a “mode switch” that imposes cognitive load and pulls users from their primary tasks. We present VisionGlow, a minimal-disruption spatial interaction technique for Vision Pro. VisionGlow represents devices as spatially-anchored “orbs.” To control a device, the user looks at its orb and performs a pinch gesture, which invokes a compact, contextual control panel. We conducted a within-subjects study (N=18) comparing VisionGlow against two baselines: the standard Apple Home app on a smartphone …

Making Deep Neural Networks Trustworthy: Intelligibility And Safety Through Symbolic Methods, Eleanor Catherine Quint Dec 2025

Making Deep Neural Networks Trustworthy: Intelligibility And Safety Through Symbolic Methods, Eleanor Catherine Quint

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The rapid adoption of deep learning has come at the cost of properties long valued in artificial intelligence: intelligibility and safety. This dissertation develops methods that restore these properties by coupling neural networks with symbolic structure.

First, for supervised classification, I propose a differentiable decision tree integrated with a supervised variational autoencoder. The resulting model maintains competitive accuracy and generative performance while exposing clear macro-features in its latent space, improving interpretability.

Second, for reinforcement learning, I extend constrained Markov decision processes by specifying constraints in formal languages. This formal language constrained MDP enables the use of automata for state augmentation, …

Predicting Major Solar Flares Using Convolutional Neural Networks And Multivariate Magnetic Field Time-Series Data, Arash Azizian Foumani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Major solar flares are sudden, intense bursts of X-ray energy from the Sun, capable of severely impacting critical technological infrastructure like satellites, communication networks, and power grids on Earth. Accurate prediction of these high-intensity events is crucial but presents a significant challenge. This is largely due to their infrequent occurrence and the complex, dynamic nature of the Sun's underlying magnetic activity which drives these events. This research focuses on improving the prediction of major solar flares by utilizing detailed historical data that tracks the evolution of magnetic properties within solar active regions over time. This time-based data, however, contains inherent …

Integrating Manager Perspectives Into The Evaluation Of Wetland Revegetation Strategies, Loren F. Taylor Dec 2025

Integrating Manager Perspectives Into The Evaluation Of Wetland Revegetation Strategies, Loren F. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Ecological restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded and is dependent on complex and context-specific decisions. The decision-making process influencing restoration is rarely examined alongside ecological processes. There is a need for research that incorporates the social, economic, institutional, and logistical considerations that shape real-world practices, as well as ecological processes. Decisions made by restoration practitioners and land managers (hereon “manager”) are challenged by the lack of information shared regarding the practical constraints (e.g., cost, labor, specialized equipment) they face. Revegetation, particularly in wetlands, poses challenges due to site conditions and degradation …

Using Luminescence Of Quartz Temper From Archaeological Pottery To Infer Wildfire Intensity In The Southwestern Us, Brooklyn D. Dib

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The size and frequency of wildfires have increased recently, impacting ecosystems, communities, and human health. This research uses the heat-sensitive luminescence signals of quartz sand temper within archaeological pottery to record past wildfire conditions. Pottery sherds, which are fragments of archaeological pottery, from the forest floor in sites in New Mexico and Arizona were collected from different fire contexts (no fire exposure, historical fires, prescribed burns, and modern wildfires). These forests are primarily Ponderosa Pine with a grassy understory. The interior sand grains of each sherd sample were analyzed using optically stimulated luminescence, which dates when the mineral grains were …

Navigating Ai-Nature Frictions: Autonomous Vehicle Testing And Nature-Based Constraints, Prerona Das, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

In cities, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being directed towards transforming different aspects of urban life. These applications take material form in urban spaces, with autonomous vehicles (AVs) providing a prominent example. AI systems rely on large volumes of data on their surroundings to refine the algorithms and enhance the accuracy of prediction for operational efficiency and safety. However, such algorithmic learning and execution can present challenges when dealing with the unpredictable, complex, and dynamic aspects of urban spaces. Nature is a paradigmatic example of such unpredictability, because natural phenomena usually defy consistent patterns and precise data-based modelling. …

Lidar And Radar Investigations Of Gravity Wave Activity In The Middle Atmosphere At Pfrr, Chatanika, Alaska, Satyaki Das

Atmospheric Sciences

The middle atmosphere, spanning the stratosphere and mesosphere, plays a critical role in global atmospheric circulation, particularly in the Arctic, where phenomena like Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) significantly perturb the circulation patterns. This dissertation investigates the dynamics of the polar middle atmosphere using four-year (20218-2022) temperature and wave activity measurements collected by the three-channel Rayleigh Density Temperature Lidar, Sodium Resonance Wind-Temperature Lidar, and Poker Flat Meteor Wind Radar at Poker Flat Research Range, Chatanika, Alaska (650N,1470W). The primary contributions are the development of a new lidar signal retrieval technique to combine the signal from three-channels and improve the lidar signal …

Generating Predictive Gene Expression Signatures For Alzheimer's Disease Using Postmortem Brain Tissue, Ashley Duche Dec 2025

Generating Predictive Gene Expression Signatures For Alzheimer's Disease Using Postmortem Brain Tissue, Ashley Duche

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau protein aggregates. These pathological features develop in specific brain regions, but why some areas are more vulnerable to early AD-related changes remains unclear. To address this, predictive gene expression signatures were developed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying regional susceptibility to AD pathology.

Methods: This was performed using postmortem brain (PMB) tissue from participants in the Religious Orders Study and Memory and Aging Project (ROSMAP), Mayo Clinic, and Mount Sinai Brain Bank (MSBB) to generate gene expression signatures from six brain …

Fractional Order Hierarchical Decompositions Using Multigrid Components, Panayot S. Vassilevski Dec 2025

Fractional Order Hierarchical Decompositions Using Multigrid Components, Panayot S. Vassilevski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Motivated by the fractional order multilevel decompositions of finite element spaces developed previously, we exploit additive representations of popular multigrid (MG) cycles to design fractional order MG decompositions. The additive representations enable us to scale the individual hierarchical components thus ending up with fractional order hierarchical decompositions that are based on the readily available MG components. This results in a highly efficient and scalable (in terms of high-performance) fractional order hierarchical MG decompositions that we tested in the setting of finite element white noise sampling as an alternative to PDE-based white noise sampling using fractional order shifted Laplacians.

Auction Consensus Algorithm With Loss Mechanism For Decentralized Task Allocation, Jose Rodriguez, Wenjie Dong, Constantine Tarawneh, Qi Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents an Auction-Consensus Algorithm with a Loss Mechanism (ACALM), a decentralized task allocation method for multi-robot systems that enhances the existing Consensus-Based Auction Algorithm (CBAA) by incorporating a novel loss propagation mechanism. In contrast to purely greedy bidding strategies, it enables agents to dynamically update task priorities based on the accumulated loss from previously unsuccessful bids. This extended work reduces globally inefficient allocations caused by early suboptimal decisions. The proposed approach is evaluated through large-scale simulations in thousands of randomized scenarios and swarm sizes ranging from 5 to 120 robots. Compared to existing CBAA and GCAA algorithms, ACALM …

Characterizing Stellar Flares On Low-Mass Stars Tic 144217628 And Proxima Centauri Using Transiting Exoplanet Space Satellite (Tess) Optical Data, Charles Edward Holloway Dec 2025

Characterizing Stellar Flares On Low-Mass Stars Tic 144217628 And Proxima Centauri Using Transiting Exoplanet Space Satellite (Tess) Optical Data, Charles Edward Holloway

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Low-mass stars account for more than 70% of stars within our galaxy. Their ob?servational interest can be attributed to their smaller radius and luminosity, making them ideal for detecting terrestrial planets inside their habitable zones. These magnetically active stars produce frequent stellar flaring events that can impact the atmospheric composition of nearby planets and interfere with the prebiotic processes for carbon-based life. Using TESS optical data, I have detected, measured astrophysical properties, and modeled the behavior of 44 flares from two low-mass stars: TIC 144217628 and Proxima Centuari. Given similar observational periods, Proxima Cen has shown to produce larger amplitudes …

Predicting Stock Price Movement With Llm-Enhanced Tweet Emotion Analysis, An Vuong

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurately predicting short-term stock price movement remains a challenging task due to the market’s inherent volatility and sensitivity to investor sentiment. In this thesis, we present a published paper that discusses a deep learning framework integrating emo- tion features extracted from tweet data with historical stock price information to forecast significant price changes on the following day. We utilize Meta’s LLaMA 3.1-8B-Instruct model to preprocess tweet data, thereby enhancing the quality of emotion features derived from three emotion analysis approaches: a transformer-based DistilRoBERTa classifier from the Hugging Face library and two lexicon-based methods using National Research Council Canada (NRC) resources. …

Evidence Of Backwater Morphodynamics In Stratigraphy On Earth And Mars: Implications For Ancient Mars, Cory Mitchell Hughes Dec 2025

Evidence Of Backwater Morphodynamics In Stratigraphy On Earth And Mars: Implications For Ancient Mars, Cory Mitchell Hughes

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Geologic evidence indicates that liquid water once flowed in abundance across the martian surface. For this reason, in the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life, Mars represents a prime target for scientific inquiry. River systems encode climatic and environmental signals in their deposits on Earth and Mars, often in fan-shaped landforms (e.g., alluvial fans, river deltas, etc.). Distal fan-shaped deposits (i.e., river deltas), in particular, act as a relatively high-fidelity record of dynamic geologic processes. As such, NASA frequently sends rovers to locations on Mars’ surface with hypothesized river deltas (e.g., Perseverance and Jezero crater). Problematically, there are many different …

Solar Powered Conservation: The Effects Of Solar Photovoltaic Facilities On Avian Community Composition, Michael Christopher Ferrara Dec 2025

Solar Powered Conservation: The Effects Of Solar Photovoltaic Facilities On Avian Community Composition, Michael Christopher Ferrara

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The expansion of solar photovoltaic energy infrastructure is transforming landscapes worldwide. Increasingly, facilities are planted with native vegetation, yet how vegetation characteristics and landscape variables shape wildlife communities in solar facilities remains poorly understood. Because avian populations have been in decline and are sensitive to habitat changes, understanding how solar facilities influence avian communities is important. In Chapter 1, we used autonomous recording units, local vegetation measurements, and land use and land cover data to quantify how avian community occupancy is influenced by solar cover in solar facilities and comparable reference sites. We used a Bayesian multi-species occupancy model to …

The emerging trend of digital communications between firms and investors through online question-and-answer (Q&A) platforms is recognized as a vital strategy for managing investor relations, contributing to enhanced market efficiency and information transparency through increased information exchange. Potential investors can seek responses from firm managers to address their information needs, thereby mitigating market uncertainties. To provide foundational insights, we conduct a survey of investors to assess their awareness, usage, and perceptions of firm-investor Q&A platforms. In the subsequent empirical study, we specifically focus on the substance of managers’ responses, which are primarily aimed at clarifying firm events or information. In …

Island-Based Evolutionary Computation With Diverse Surrogates And Adaptive Knowledge Transfer For High-Dimensional Data-Driven Optimization, Xianrong Zhang, Yuejiao Gong, Zhiguang Cao, Jun Zhang Dec 2025

Island-Based Evolutionary Computation With Diverse Surrogates And Adaptive Knowledge Transfer For High-Dimensional Data-Driven Optimization, Xianrong Zhang, Yuejiao Gong, Zhiguang Cao, Jun Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in data-driven evolutionary algorithms (DDEAs) employing surrogate models to approximate the objective functions with limited data. However, current DDEAs are primarily designed for lower-dimensional problems and their performance drops significantly when applied to large-scale optimization problems (LSOPs). To address the challenge, this paper proposes an offline DDEA named DSKT-DDEA. DSKT-DDEA leverages multiple islands that utilize different data to establish diverse surrogate models, fostering diverse subpopulations and mitigating the risk of premature convergence. In the intra-island optimization phase, a semi-supervised learning method is devised to fine-tune the surrogates. It not only facilitates …

Coresets For Clustering Under Stochastic Noise, Lingxiao Huang, Zhize Li, Nisheeth K. Vishnoi, Runkai Yang, Haoyu Zhao Dec 2025

Coresets For Clustering Under Stochastic Noise, Lingxiao Huang, Zhize Li, Nisheeth K. Vishnoi, Runkai Yang, Haoyu Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the problem of constructing coresets for $(k, z)$-clustering when the input dataset is corrupted by stochastic noise drawn from a known distribution. In this setting, evaluating the quality of a coreset is inherently challenging, as the true underlying dataset is unobserved. To address this, we investigate coreset construction using surrogate error metrics that are tractable and provably related to the true clustering cost. We analyze a traditional metric from prior work and introduce a new error metric that more closely aligns with the true cost. Although our metric is defined independently of the noise distribution, it enables approximation …

Design Principles For Customer‑Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Accuracy-Enabling Differential Privacy-Preserving Truth Discovery, Man Zhang, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Bin Luo, Siqi Ma, Robert H. Deng Dec 2025

Accuracy-Enabling Differential Privacy-Preserving Truth Discovery, Man Zhang, Xinghua Li, Yinbin Miao, Bin Luo, Siqi Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Perturbation-based privacy-preserving truth discovery requires the Service Provider (SP) to calculate the truthful aggregation result from perturbed data of the Data Sources (DSs), which inevitably damages the aggregation accuracy due to perturbation noise added in the data. Thus, the existing works attempt to relieve the perturbation errors by reducing noise amounts or adjusting aggregation weights of DSs. However, the former sacrifices DSs’ privacy preservation and the latter has the limited accuracy recovery performance. Aiming at it, we propose an accuracy-enabling differential privacy-preserving truth discovery consisting of an independence-guaranteed data perturbation module and a progressive-private noise elimination module. Specifically, in the …

Genscore: Agent-Based Short-Answer Question Generation And Scoring In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Lwin Khin Shar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Short-answer questions are commonly used in educational assessments, as they are often viewed as a more effective way than multiple-choice questions to determine whether students have achieved the intended learning outcomes. However, manually creating appropriate questions targeting different cognitive levels such as those defined by the Bloom’s Taxonomy, and grading text answers from students are not trivial tasks for instructors. Existing work on auto-question generation and scoring in computing education typically targets coding-based questions. However, in software engineering courses, assessments can extend beyond coding to understanding of processes, DevOps methodologies, system design, etc. This work aims to address the dual …

Development Of A Handy Tool For The Selection Of Urban Stormwater Best Management Practices, Aaron T. Kenny

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The City of Norfolk, Virginia faces substantial stormwater management challenges due to shallow groundwater, tidal influence, dense urban development, and limited right-of-way. These constraints limit the applicability of many Best Management Practices (BMPs) and require the early identification of feasible practices before detailed hydrologic modeling. This thesis introduces a decision-support tool that quickly and systematically identifies and prioritizes BMPs that are both feasible and well-suited to Norfolk’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program, streamlining early-stage selection and saving time and resources.

The tool implements a two-stage methodology. First, feasibility gates are applied using catalog attributes derived from the Virginia …

When Less Language Is More: Language-Reasoning Disentanglement Makes Llms Better Multilingual Reasoners, Weixiang Zhao, Jiahe Guo, Yang Deng, Tongtong Wu, Wenxuan Zhang, Yulin Hu, Xingyu Sui, Yanyan Zhao, Wanxiang Che, Bing Qin, Tat-Seng Chua, Ting Liu Dec 2025

When Less Language Is More: Language-Reasoning Disentanglement Makes Llms Better Multilingual Reasoners, Weixiang Zhao, Jiahe Guo, Yang Deng, Tongtong Wu, Wenxuan Zhang, Yulin Hu, Xingyu Sui, Yanyan Zhao, Wanxiang Che, Bing Qin, Tat-Seng Chua, Ting Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multilingual reasoning remains a significant challenge for large language models (LLMs), with performance disproportionately favoring high-resource languages. Drawing inspiration from cognitive neuroscience, which suggests that human reasoning functions largely independently of language processing, we hypothesize that LLMs similarly encode reasoning and language as separable components that can be disentangled to enhance multilingual reasoning. To evaluate this, we perform a causal intervention by ablating language-specific representations at inference time. Experiments on 10 open-weight LLMs spanning 11 typologically diverse languages show that this language-specific ablation consistently boosts multilingual reasoning performance. Layer-wise analyses further confirm that language and reasoning representations can be effectively …

Instance-Adaptive Gated Fusion Of Multi-Transform Image Representations, Prince Appiah Dec 2025

Instance-Adaptive Gated Fusion Of Multi-Transform Image Representations, Prince Appiah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation proposes the Instance-Adaptive Gated Fusion (IAGF) framework, a novel deep learning architecture for adaptive and interpretable fusion of multiple time–series image transformations. While existing methods rely on static concatenation or dataset-level optimization, IAGF introduces a learnable gating mechanism that dynamically assigns per-instance weights to Recurrence Plots (RP), Gramian Angular Summation Fields (GASF), and Gramian Angular Difference Fields (GADF). The gating layer performs a convex fusion of transformation-specific embeddings under a softmax constraint, ensuring mathematical stability and interpretability. An entropy-regularized objective prevents dominance collapse and promotes balanced exploration of transformations during training. Comprehensive experiments across eighteen benchmark datasets, spanning …

Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon Dec 2025

Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Modern predictive systems frequently operate under conditions of limited annotated data, high uncertainty, and the need for reliable decision-making. When the predictive models expand across heterogeneous data types (e.g., spatial, temporal streams), the challenge lies not only in accurate prediction but also in adapting in data distributions shifts or label scarcity. To address these issues, this thesis explores an Intelligent Predictive Framework that operates robustly under data scarcity and uncertainty across two distinct domains: medical imaging (spatial) and time-series forecasting (temporal). In the first part of this work, a semi-supervised mean teacher (MT) paradigm is tailored for medical image segmentation …

Hubert-Based Models And Evaluation Strategies For Pragmatically-Faithful Speech To Speech Translation, Javier Vazquez Dec 2025

Hubert-Based Models And Evaluation Strategies For Pragmatically-Faithful Speech To Speech Translation, Javier Vazquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Pragmatic fidelity in speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) has largely been understudied, leading to communication tools inadequate to support non-superficial dialog. We aim to improve pragmatic faithfulness in English-Spanish translation through the development of machine learning models that are able to predict a corresponding pragmatic representation in the other language. To evaluate performance, we developed a pipeline that utilizes a recently-developed pragmatic similarity evaluation metric to compare models. Further, we developed models that exploit HuBERT features as these have been found suitable for various prosody and pragmatics related tasks. Our models outperformed human and state-of-the-art predictions, albeit the methodology being limited to …

Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora Dec 2025

Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Deep neural networks excel at a wide range of processing tasks across various disciplines. However, the quantity and quality of data significantly impact network performance. In specialized domains, high-quality datasets are often difficult to gather, interpret, and curate for effective learning. Few-shot learning techniques, including transfer learning, data augmentation, and meta-learning, have emerged to address these constraints.

We propose three physics-guided strategies for enhancing neural networks trained with limited data: (1) combining existing models like LSTMs with Physics-Informed Neural Networks through two-branch architectures that merge their outputs, (2) deriving custom physics-informed data augmentation algorithms to expand limited datasets, and (3) …

Is Noise Exposure Associated With Impaired Extended High Frequency Hearing Despite A Normal Audiogram? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sajana Aryal, Monica Trevino, Hansapani Rodrigo, Srikanta K. Mishra Dec 2025

Is Noise Exposure Associated With Impaired Extended High Frequency Hearing Despite A Normal Audiogram? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sajana Aryal, Monica Trevino, Hansapani Rodrigo, Srikanta K. Mishra

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the initial signature of noise-induced auditory damage remains a significant priority. Animal models suggest the cochlear base is particularly vulnerable to noise, raising the possibility that early-stage noise exposure could be linked to basal cochlear dysfunction, even when thresholds at 0.25-8 kHz are normal. To investigate this in humans, we conducted a meta-analysis following a systematic review, examining the association between noise exposure and hearing in frequencies from 9 to 20 kHz as a marker for basal cochlear dysfunction. Systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and the PICOS framework. Studies on noise exposure and hearing in the 9 …
