A Topological Approach To Molecular Chirality, Erica Flapan Jan 2011

A Topological Approach To Molecular Chirality, Erica Flapan

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Topology is the study of deformations of geometric figures. Chemistry is the study of molecular structures. At first glance these fields seem to have nothing in common. But let’s take a closer look to see how these fields come together in the study of molecular symmetries.

Synthesis Of Molecular Containers Based On Modifications Of Resorcin(4)Arene And Calix(4)Arene, Anupama Makineni Jan 2011

Synthesis Of Molecular Containers Based On Modifications Of Resorcin(4)Arene And Calix(4)Arene, Anupama Makineni

Masters Theses

This research work was mainly focused on the synthesis of molecular containers based on modifications ofresorcin[4]arene and calix[4]arene.

The modifications of resorcin[ 4 ]arene include the attempts to attach a phthalimide featured linker onto the phenol hydroxyl groups of resorcin[4]arene. A few halogen leaving groups were used, including fluorine, chlorine, and bromine. The substitution with tetraflorophthalimide resulted in a mixture of regio-isomeric products, whereas for 4,5-dichloro- and 4,5-dibromophthalimides, no desired substitution product was formed. It was, however, discovered that both 4,5-dichloro- and 4,5-dibromophthalimides forms monoclinic crystals. The second modification of resorcin[4]arene focused on functionalizations of both upper and lower rims …

Evaluating Methods For Optimizing Classification Success From Otolith Tracers For Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In The Chesapeake Bay, Stacy Kavita Beharry Jan 2011

Evaluating Methods For Optimizing Classification Success From Otolith Tracers For Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In The Chesapeake Bay, Stacy Kavita Beharry

OES Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the natal sources of fish is an important step in understanding its population dynamics. Adult recruits are often sourced from multiple nursery areas, with good quality locations contributing disproportionately more fish to the adult stock. Because population persistence is strongly influenced by nursery habitat, methods that correctly identify the source of recruits are necessary for effective management. Within the last decade, otolith chemistry signatures have been increasingly used as a natural marker to delineate fish from a mixture of nursery sources. Despite the widespread use of otolith trace element and stable isotope ratios as habitat markers, the statistical approaches …

Creative Exercises In General Chemistry: A Student-Centered Assessment, Scott E. Lewis, Janet L. Shaw, Kathryn A. Freeman

Faculty Articles

Creative exercises (CEs) are a form of assessment in which students are given a prompt and asked to write down as many distinct, correct, and relevant facts about the prompt as they can. Students receive credit for each fact that they include that is related to the prompt and distinct from the other facts they list. With CEs, students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and the opportunity to select the information that they believe is related to the prompt. In addition, CEs encourage students to connect concepts because any relevant information presented can assist them in completing the …

Accretion is a fundamental process which establishes the dynamics of the protoplanetary disk and the final properties of the forming star. In solar-type stars, the star–disk coupling is determined by the magnetic field structure, which is responsible for funneling material from the disk midplane to higher latitudes on the star. Here, we use pan-chromatic data for the Herbig Ae star MWC 480 to address whether similar processes occur in intermediatemass stars. MWC 480 has X-ray emission typical of actively accreting Herbig Ae stars, but with ∼10× more photoelectric absorption than expected from optical and FUV data. We consider three sources …

Cell surface carbohydrates existing as parts of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and other conjugates present the first information about cell to the outside world and are intimately involved in various biological events such as intercellular communication, and molecular and cellular targeting. However, mechanisms of most processes at the molecular level are still unclear. Therefore, it is very important to develop carbohydrate-specific binding molecules for rapid, efficient, sensitive purification and accurate analysis of complex carbohydrate structures as well as their functions. Furthermore, carbohydrate-specific binding molecules can be expected to be used in medical diagnostic applications for carbohydrate biomarkers. In this thesis study, oriented …

Using an Integrated Assessment (IA) framework, we consolidated and utilized existing data from the Detroit River to develop models that both identify possible drivers of elevated fish contaminant body burdens, and to facilitate a more risk-based approach of tissue trigger-levels for consumption advisories. This integrated assessment approach was particularly useful for consumption advisories as it provided the ability to integrate and organize complex data in a manner that can help inform management decisions. In addition, the IA framework explicitly fosters collaboration and participation of multiple interested groups. We have capitalized on this component of IAs, by seeking the active participation …

The Use Of Fourier Transform (Ft) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering For Biochemical Analysis, Robert Butler Jeffers Jul 2009

The Use Of Fourier Transform (Ft) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering For Biochemical Analysis, Robert Butler Jeffers

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique that has created exciting opportunities in the field of bioanalytical chemistry, where it combines ultrasensitive detection of biologically relevant molecules with vibrational spectroscopy. Due to the difficulties in preparing reproducible SERS active substrates, SERS has been mainly used as a qualitative tool. In order for SERS to be utilized as a viable tool for quantitative analysis, simple, facile SERS substrates which generate clean, highly reproducible signals must be developed. This dissertation deals with the evaluation of three different methods of SERS that led to the development of a novel substrate for …

Web Based Classes For Enhancement Of Prelaboratory Lectures, Tiffany Hesser, Michael Collura Jun 2009

Web Based Classes For Enhancement Of Prelaboratory Lectures, Tiffany Hesser, Michael Collura

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The use of web classes, such as Tegrity Campus1, as a supplement to pre laboratory reading or a replacement for pre laboratory lectures could become a standard tool in laboratory education protocol. In classes with multiple lab sections and instructors, pre laboratory lectures can lack consistency and it can be difficult to gauge the students’ level of preparation. With the ever increasing exposure to technology, students generally prefer information in a digital and multimedia form, rather than textbook readings. Therefore, this method can prove to better prepare students prior to laboratory experiments, increasing the overall understanding of the chemical reactions …

Anthropogenic Osmium In Rain And Snow Reveals Global-Scale Atmospheric Contamination, Cynthia Chen, Peter N. Sedwick, Mukul Sharma May 2009

Anthropogenic Osmium In Rain And Snow Reveals Global-Scale Atmospheric Contamination, Cynthia Chen, Peter N. Sedwick, Mukul Sharma

Dartmouth Scholarship

Osmium is one of the rarer elements in seawater, with typical concentration of approximately 10 x 10(-15) g g(-1) (5.3 x 10(-14) mol kg(-1)). The osmium isotope composition ((187)Os/(188)Os ratio) of deep oceans is 1.05, reflecting a balance between inputs from continental crust (approximately 1.3) and mantle/cosmic dust (approximately 0.13). Here, we show that the (187)Os/(188)Os ratios measured in rain and snow collected around the world range from 0.16 to 0.48, much lower than expected (>1), but similar to the isotope composition of ores (approximately 0.2) that are processed to extract platinum and other metals to be used primarily …

Β-Diketonate, Β-Ketoiminate, And Β-Diiminate Complexes Of Difluoroboron, Felipe P. Macedo, Chengeto Gwengo, Sergey V. Lindeman, Mark D. Smith, James R. Gardinier

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A series of β-diketonate, keto(aryl)iminato, and β-bis(aryl)iminato complexes of difluoroboron, twenty in total, have been prepared to assess the impact of chelate ring and aniline substitution on the structural, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of these ubiquitous chelates. DFT (B3LYP/6-31G*) calculations supplemented the experimental results and both demonstrated that replacing oxygen with the more electron-donating aniline groups serves to only fine-tune the electronic properties because both the HOMO and LUMO energies are affected by such substitution. The electronic properties of all compounds are most greatly influenced by the nature of the substituents bound to the carbon portion of the chelate ring. …

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty Jan 2008

Palaeoclimate Research In Villars Cave (Dordogne, Sw-France), Dominique Genty

International Journal of Speleology

Villars Cave is a typical shallow cave from South-West France (45.44°N; 0.78°E; 175 m asl) that has provided several speleothem palaeoclimatic records such as the millennial scale variability of the Last Glacial period and the Last Deglaciation. Monitoring the Villars cave environment over a 13-year period has helped in the understanding of the stable isotopic speleothem content and in the hydrology. For example, it was demonstrated that most of the calcite CaCO3 carbon comes from the soil CO2, which explains the sensitivity of the δ13C to any vegetation and climatic changes. Drip rate monitoring, carried …

Electrochemical Behavior Of Dill Pipe In 31%(By Mass) Nacl Solution Based New Type Inhibitor, Fu-Guo Liu, Min Du, Qing-Zhang Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The inhibitive effect of compound inhibitor including emulsifier(P), zinc sulfate, sodium polyphosphate, Glucose Gluconate was studied in 31% NaCl (by mass) solution. The inhibitory mechanism was analyzed by polarization curve and EIS. The results showed that the compound inhibitor was anodic-type inhibitor and its inhibitive effect on anodic and cathodal reaction was the most obvious at 200×10-6g·L-1. And the results of EIS revealed that the inhibition efficiency increased and the film formed on electrode surface was more and more compact with time. Inhibition mechanism was different with concentration of inhibitor.

A Computational Chemistry Study Of Spin Traps., Jacob Fosso-Tande

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many defects in physiological processes are due to free radical damage: reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radicals have been implicated in the parthenogenesis of cancer, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis. We herein characterize the phenyl-N-ter-butyl nitrone (PBN) type spin traps in conjunction with the most studied dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) type spin traps using the hydroxyl radical. In this study, theoretical calculations are carried out on the two main types of spin traps (DMPO and PBN) at the density functional theory level (DFT). The energies of the optimized structures, hyperfine calculations in gaseous and aqueous phases of the spin traps …

Hydrothermally Altered Rock And Hot-Spring Deposits At Yellowstone National Park—Characterized Using Airborne Visible- And Infrared-Spectroscopy Data, K. Eric Livo, Fred A. Kruse, Roger N. Clark, Raymond F. Kokaly, W. C. Shanks Iii

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The hydrothermal system in Yellowstone National Park has created altered rock and hot-spring deposits that were mapped using AVIRIS (airborne visible and infrared imaging spectrometer) data. The mapped minerals are indicative of the geologic processes and environments that controlled their formation. Ongoing volcanic activity is expressed at the surface by geothermal features, earthquakes, and geologically recent caldera formation. Precipitated minerals such as siliceous sinter and travertine on the surface are derived from chloride-rich alkaline solutions that are leaching silica and calcite from the underlying country rock. Siliceous sinter and montmorillonite are associated with hydrothermal systems abundant in hot water, whereas …

The Hydrology And Sediment Transport Of Low-Gradient, Forested Headwater Streams, Philip Saksa Jan 2007

The Hydrology And Sediment Transport Of Low-Gradient, Forested Headwater Streams, Philip Saksa

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding stream hydrology of headwater regions is critical in effective land management for downstream water quantity and quality. Although extensive research has been performed on headwater streams in topographically variable areas, fewer studies examine low-gradient headwater stream systems, such as those existing on much of the southeastern coastal plain. This study aims to investigate spatial and temporal variation of headwater stream hydrology in a low-gradient forested watershed, quantify mass loading of suspended and dissolved solids in the watershed, and assess the applicability of a spatially distributed model in predicting hydrologic responses of a flat terrain landscape. Stream discharge and sediments …

On 28 February 2000, a volcanic cloud from Hekla volcano, Iceland, was serendipitously sampled by a DC-8 research aircraft during the SAGE III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE I). It was encountered at night at 10.4 km above sea level (in the lower stratosphere) and 33–34 hours after emission. The cloud is readily identified by abundant SO2 (≤1 ppmv), HCl (≤70 ppbv), HF (≤60 ppbv), and particles (which may have included fine silicate ash). We compare observed and modeled cloud compositions to understand its chemical evolution. Abundances of sulfur and halogen species indicate some oxidation of sulfur gases but …

Theses

Solvent is the largest-volume raw material used at Janssen Pharmaceutical (Ire) Ltd. Over 2.2 million m3 were used in 2004. The top 13 solvents make up 99% of this amount. There are two main uses for solvent on site, processing and cleaning. Processing uses 55% of the total solvent used on site, cleaning uses the remainder.

Waste solvent forms the majority of the hazardous waste produced at Janssen. Three treatment options exist at present for this waste: incineration, recovery for reuse and energy recovery. All of the hazardous waste produced on site must be exported for these treatment options, …

Solution-Based Synthesis Of Nitride Fuels, Kenneth Czerwinski, Thomas Hartmann Jan 2006

Solution-Based Synthesis Of Nitride Fuels, Kenneth Czerwinski, Thomas Hartmann

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

A wide variety of fuel concepts are considered for advanced reactor technology including metals, metal oxides or metal nitrides as solid solutions or composite materials. Nitride fuels have appropriate properties for advanced fuels including high thermal conductivity, thermal stability, solid-state solubility of actinides, fissile metal density, and suitable neutronic properties. A drawback of nitride fuels involves their synthesis. A key parameter for preparing oxide fuels is the precipitation step in the sol-gel process. For nitride fuels, the current synthetic route is carbothermic reduction from the oxide to the nitride. This process step is based on solid phase reactions and for …

Synthesis Of Vic-Dioxime Derivatives With Hydrazone Side Groups And Their Metal Complexes, İlknur Babahan, Hüseyi̇n Anil, Nursabah Sarikavakli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two novel vic-dioxime (L^1H_2, L^2H_2) compounds bearing hydrazone side groups and their transition metal complexes Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) were synthesized. The vic-dioxime ligands bearing hydrazone side groups were synthesized by reacting anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2) with 4-nitroacetophenone and 4-methylacetophenenone, respectively. Ligands form mononuclear complexes [(LH)_2M] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:2 with M=Co(II)(H_2O)_2, Ni(II), and Cu(II). Zn(II) forms complexes [(LH)(H_2O)(Cl)Zn] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:1. The Co(II) complexes of the ligands are proposed to be octahedral with water molecules as axial ligands, the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes are proposed to be square planar, and the …
