Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer Apr 1984

Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The most disastrous oil spill the western hemisphere has ever witnessed occurred during the 10 months between June 1979 and March 1980, when the experimental well IXTOC I blew out off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The disaster's effects on South Texas virtually destroyed a year's earnings for the region's tourism industry and cut into the profits of many commercial fishermen. The activities at the well that caused the blowout and subsequent spill, the effects of the oil on Texas' Gulf Coast, and the legal attempts to recover against losses suffered as a result of the spill will be …

Part I: The Synthesis Of New Potential Insecticides. Part Ii: New Aromatic Nucleophililic Subsitution Reactions, Fluoroalkoxylation And N,N-Dimethylamination, Cesar Colon

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A series of routes are described for the synthesis of new potential insecticides which are symmetrical or asymmetrical similogs of 2,5-Bis (dichloropheny1)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and its precursor diacyl hydrazine. Also two new aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions are discussed. Activated aryl halides are reacted with fluorinated alkoxide anions. In all cases, substitution of the halogen by a fluoroalkoxy group was observed, and activated aryl halides are reacted with HMPA as an N, N-dimethyl aminating agent. In all cases, substitution of the halogen by a dimethyl amino group was observed. The effect of the activating group and the leaving group is described and a …

A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester Jul 1983

A Model Of The Population Dynamics Of The Blue Crab In Chesapeake Bay, Betty Springer Hester

OES Theses and Dissertations

This study has particular application to the blue crab fisheries in Chesapeake Bay, an economically important industry whose successful management has been hindered by relatively poor understanding of the population dynamics. Recent biological studies have indicated a systematic spawning behavior which seems designed for ejection of larvae seaward from the bay entrance where they spend their pre-metamorphosis stages in the neuston. A physical mechanism for retention of the larvae in sufficient proximity to the bay entrance for their return at the proper time which involves the action of wind stress in shallow waters is proposed. Since the supply of blue …

Kentucky's Ipm Program For Alfalfa, Chris M. Christensen Feb 1983

Kentucky's Ipm Program For Alfalfa, Chris M. Christensen

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a concept that encourages the use of a variety of strategies in the management of crop pests. It is very important to have an indepth understanding of the crop production system when implementing an IPM program. An IPM program is dynamic requiring a continual evaluation of the status of the crop, the associated pest complex, the effects of the pests and the biological deterrents to those pests. If a pest population gets "out of hand" and begins to cause economic damage, pest management techniques may need to be applied. These pest management measures may be …

Drainage Basin Characteristics Of The Minnesota River, Paul Fasching Jan 1983

Drainage Basin Characteristics Of The Minnesota River, Paul Fasching

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The geomorphology of the Minnesota River Basin is poorly understood, yet much of modern fluvial ecology requires this information as a prerequisite to physical, chemical, or biological studies. The purpose of this paper is to provide background descriptive geomorphological river basin data for the Minnesota River. Eleven descriptive parameters (river gradient, Form f, Shape 1, Shape 2, circularity ratio, elongation ration, stream order, bifurcation ratio, average area by order, number of lakes per order and number of lower order streams entering higher streams) were determined for the Minnesota River Basin as a whole as well as for ten subbasins. A …

Synthesis Of Potential Insecticides And New Synthetic Applications Of Vinamidinium And Azavinamidinium Salts: Reactions With Reducing Agents And Nitro Compounds, Michael J. Lizzi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses the research conducted in two areas: the synthesis of potential insecticides and the investigation of vinamidinium and azavinamidinium salt chemistry. Firstly, four classes of compounds were synthesized and characterized in the investigation of new potential insecticides. These classes of compounds include a-formamidine methyl esters, amidines, diacylhydrazines and 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and were characterized via NMR and infrared spectroscopy. This account also reveals and discusses the experimental conditions and procedures necessary for the preparation of these potential insecticides. Secondly, the reaction of [ 3-(dimethyl amino)-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene] dimethyl ammonium chloride (Gold's Reagent) with nucleophiles such as activated (nitro) methylene compounds was examined …

Aspects Of Larval Ecology Of Squilla Empusa (Crustacea, Stomatopoda) In Chesapeake Bay, Steven G. Morgan

OES Faculty Publications

Larvae of Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton and were laboratory-reared in 16 combinations of temperature and salinity to determine their tolerances. Larvae survived longer and molted more frequently when reared at 25%, and 20° or 25° C, which corresponds to the natural conditions of Chesapeake Bay when the larvae were collected.

A 2 year planktonic survey conducted in the lower region of the bay by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences was compared with a survey made at the bay mouth in 1976. The seasonal occurrence of Squilla empusa larvae extended from the last week of July until …

Ocean Chlorophyll Studies From A U-2 Aircraft Platform, Hongsuk H. Kim, Charles R. Mcclain, Lamdin R. Blaine, William D. Hart, Larry P. Atkinson, James A. Yoder Jan 1980

Ocean Chlorophyll Studies From A U-2 Aircraft Platform, Hongsuk H. Kim, Charles R. Mcclain, Lamdin R. Blaine, William D. Hart, Larry P. Atkinson, James A. Yoder

CCPO Publications

Chlorophyll gradient maps of large ocean areas were generated from U-2/OCS data obtained over test sites in the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. The delineation of oceanic features using the upward radiant intensity relies on an analysis method which presupposes that radiation backscattered from the atmosphere and the ocean surface can be properly modeled by using a measurement made at 778 nm. The calculation of atmospheric radiance was performed by using a method developed by J.V. Dave. An estimation of the chlorophyll concentration is performed by properly ratioing radiances measured at 472 and 548 nm after removing the atmospheric effects. …

Fisheries Report No 38 - The Shark Bay Prawn Fishery (1970 - 1976), J. W. Penn, R. W. Stalker

Fisheries Research Reports

The existence of prawn stocks in Shark Bay, Western Australia, has been known since 1904 when the sailing ketch "Rip" on charter to the Western Australian Government, trawled large quantities of prawns from the area between Bernier Island and the mainland, Gale (1905). Although the Fisheries research vessel "Lancelin" trawled potentially commercial quantities of prawns from Shark Bay in the early 1950's, it was not until 1962 that a regular fishery was begun.

Today the prawn stocks of Shark Bay support Western Australia's largest and most consistent prawn fishery, having an annual production currently exceeding 2 000 tonnes. The catch …

Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed May 1978

Multicollinearity And The Estimation Of Regression Coefficients, John Charles Teed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The precision of the estimates of the regression coefficients in a regression analysis is affected by multicollinearity. The effect of certain factors on multicollinearity and the estimates was studied. The response variables were the standard error of the regression coefficients and a standarized statistic that measures the deviation of the regression coefficient from the population parameter.

The estimates are not influenced by any one factor in particular, but rather some combination of factors. The larger the sample size, the better the precision of the estimates no matter how "bad" the other factors may be.

The standard error of the regression …

Electromagnetic Repellers—Fact Or Fiction?, William D. Fitzwater Mar 1978

Electromagnetic Repellers—Fact Or Fiction?, William D. Fitzwater

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 8th (1978)

The effectiveness of devices that supposedly repel a large number of invertebrate and vertebrate animals by emitting oscillating electromagnetic impulses is investigated. While scientific support that electromagnetic forces affect biological systems exists, these data are based on animals confined under higher intensity fields than are seemingly produced by commercial units. A number of instances of field use of the devices is discussed. These indicate little objective support for the units.

The Invertebrate Fauna Of Tropical American Caves, Part Iii: Jamaica, An Introduction, Stewart B. Peck Jan 1975

The Invertebrate Fauna Of Tropical American Caves, Part Iii: Jamaica, An Introduction, Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

The scattered literature on the physical speleology and biospeleology of the West Indian island of Jamaica is brought together. As a result of recent field work, a summary of the Jamaican vertebrate and invertebrate caves is given. The invertebrate fauna is known to include some 150 free-living macroscopic species. These are mostly troglophilic scavengers and predators associated with guano accumulations. However, some 25 species, mostly terrestrial and undescribed, are known to be troglobites. This is one of the largest known assemblages of tropical troglobites. Brief descriptions are given for the 54 cave sites which have been biologically studied.

A Review Of Coyote Control Research, Donald S. Balser Mar 1974

A Review Of Coyote Control Research, Donald S. Balser

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

Research on coyote control has lagged behind operational control for several decades. With the current controversy over toxicants and control of coyotes, attention has suddenly been given to the research needs of the problem. In the past research on annual damage problems, particularly predators, was concentrated on coming up with new lethal methods. The picture has changed with a definite need to study the entire problem, including the measurement of losses, the ecology of predators and prey, their behavior, and means of solving loss problems by non-lethal methods or mechanical protection. In any lethal control research, selectivity must be emphasized. …

The Effects Of Fenthion On A Nesting Population Of Quelea During Experimental Control By Aerial Spraying, Jeffrey J. Jackson, Peter O. Park Oct 1973

The Effects Of Fenthion On A Nesting Population Of Quelea During Experimental Control By Aerial Spraying, Jeffrey J. Jackson, Peter O. Park

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Quelea quelea is probably the most important avian pest of cereal crops in the sahelian areas of Africa. Its depredations reduce the cereal production of many African nations that lie within its range. To prevent this damage, bird control organizations carry out campaigns to reduce their numbers. Frequently these efforts have given poor crop protection for the cost of control because of inadequate control technology. Factors contributing to the difficulty of carrying out this kind of control are the migrations of the birds which are still incompletely understood, the inaccessability of many nesting areas, the relatively high reproductive potential of …
