Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey May 1941

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. Paleontologic evidence suggests that the Nounan formation is of Upper …

The Ancestral Ursid, Hemicyon, In Nebraska, Edwin H. Colbert Jan 1941

The Ancestral Ursid, Hemicyon, In Nebraska, Edwin H. Colbert

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

During the summer of 1928, a University of Nebraska State Museum field party, composed of Dr. A. L. Lugn and the writer, made a collection of upper Miocene and lower Pliocene mammals in Brown and Cherry counties, Nebraska. This collection was sponsored and made possible by the generosity of the late Hon. Charles H. Morrill.

Guide For A Field Conference On The Tertiary And Pleistocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Thompson M. Stout, Alvin Leonard Lugn, M. K. Elias, F. W. Johnson, M. F. Skinner

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The earliest record of the Museum states that in June of 1874 Professor Samuel Aughey was appointed Director of Cabinets. He was succeeded by Professor Lewis E. Hicks in June, 1885. Little work was carried on in paleontology, however, until Dr. Erwin H. Barbour took charge in 1891 and organized the first expeditions. In 1893, Mr. Charles H. Morrill began his generous support of the field work, and since that time important contributions by him and others have enabled this work to continue. The search for fossil remains has taken Museum parties to every county in Nebraska, and to several …

The Effect Of Catalyst And Time Upon The Oxidation Of Cotton Seed Oil Air Blown At 115 Degrees C, Joseph Toth Jun 1940

The Effect Of Catalyst And Time Upon The Oxidation Of Cotton Seed Oil Air Blown At 115 Degrees C, Joseph Toth

Bachelors’ Theses

Of late years, the manufacture of oils oxidized by the direct action of air upon them, has greatly increased. ’’Blown oils”, as these are called, render non-drying or semi-drying oils (rape, cotton seed, etc.) more suitable for paint, either directly or as ingredients in paint mixtures. In the case of drying oils (linseed oil, etc.), oxidation changes necessary to produce more rapid absorption of oxygen from the air by the oil, is brought about more rapidly.

This experimentation was suggested by the work of A. Ivanova, who blew air through cotton seed oil at 115°C until required drying properties were …

The Separation And Identification Of The Solid Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization Of Acetone, Albert J. Schlaeger May 1940

The Separation And Identification Of The Solid Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization Of Acetone, Albert J. Schlaeger

Bachelors’ Theses

It Is surprising to note in the literature that oils and fats like linseed, tung, tea seed, soya bean and other oils although employed in the arts for many centuries still have their exact composition unknown. The fatty acids composing most of our common fats and oils are recognized but many of their properties still remain to be known. Up to the lat fifteen years the examination of oils was concerned only with the purity of a sample and with crude methods only rough compositions were calculated.

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of Castor Oil, Anthony Toth May 1940

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of Castor Oil, Anthony Toth

Bachelors’ Theses

The intention of the author in doing this research was to obtain some data on the effect of time, temperature, and pressure on the hydrogenation of castor oil at 100°C. The author is also interested to see if a method could be devised by which the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids could be separated from the hydroxy acids of hydrogenated castor oil.

A Determination Of The Melting Points Of Binary Mixtures Of Halowax 1014 And Natural Waxes By The Dropping Pellet Method, Leslie Jones May 1940

A Determination Of The Melting Points Of Binary Mixtures Of Halowax 1014 And Natural Waxes By The Dropping Pellet Method, Leslie Jones

Bachelors’ Theses

The original intent of this thesis was twofold: First, to adapt the dropping pellet method of determining melting points to the determination of the melting points of various binary mixtures of Halowax 1014 and natural waxes. This work follows up the investigation of Kroening who used the ball and ring method of determining the melting points of mixtures of various Halowaxes and natural waxes. Second, to attempt to ascertain whether there are formed in these binary mixtures chemical compounds which would account for their peculiar behavior as regards melting points.

The Effect Of Alcohols On Paramecia, William C. Lawler May 1940

The Effect Of Alcohols On Paramecia, William C. Lawler

Bachelors’ Theses

A phenomenon of surpassing biological interest is the adjustment of living substance to its surroundings. That living things should so act as to promote their own welfare is indeed wonderful; that such acts are common is evident on every hand.

A Comparison Between Saponification And Iodine Values And Melting Point Curves For Mixtures Of Various Natural Waxes And Halowax 1012, William Kenneth Watts May 1940

A Comparison Between Saponification And Iodine Values And Melting Point Curves For Mixtures Of Various Natural Waxes And Halowax 1012, William Kenneth Watts

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis 1s concerned with the nature of the action of the lowering of the melting point of the various natural waxes by the addition of Halowax. The problem was suggested by the work of Louis Kroening in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on the Melting Points of the Various Waxes", and also by that of Joseph M. Sevenich in his thesis, "An Investigation of Halowaxes in Trinary Wax Mixtures". The former showed conclusively that the presence of Halowax in a wax mixture invariably lowered the melting point of the natural wax. The latter showed …

The Preparation Of Methyl, Ethyl, And Borneol Glucoside, Florence Margaret Berger May 1940

The Preparation Of Methyl, Ethyl, And Borneol Glucoside, Florence Margaret Berger

Bachelors’ Theses

The present research was undertaken to find methods suitable for the preparation of methyl, ethyl, and borneol glucoside. The problem was to prepare methyl, ethyl, and borneol glucoside, and to determine their constants in regard to the melting point and optical rotation. These results were then compared to the results obtained by Emil Fischer and J. Hamalaienen.

An Attempt To Correlate Certain Physical And Chemical Properties Of Various Commercial Animal Glues, Robert C. Andersen Jan 1940

An Attempt To Correlate Certain Physical And Chemical Properties Of Various Commercial Animal Glues, Robert C. Andersen

Bachelors’ Theses

The manufacture and use of glue involves many important industries, and up to recent times we, in America, have lost much by our old "rule of thumb" and traditional methods for testing glues. In recent times much work has been done on a strictly scientific basis to explain the actions of glue from both a colloidal and a physicochemical aspect.

This thesis is concerned in particular with the possibility of coordinating the different properties exhibited by the accepted glue tests so that a definite criterion might be postulated for a high-grade animal glue. This task, however, proved extremely difficult, for …

Nebraska In Relation To The Problems Of Pleistocene Stratigraphy, Alvin Leonard Lugn Dec 1939

Nebraska In Relation To The Problems Of Pleistocene Stratigraphy, Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is so peculiarly situated with respect to Pleistocene deposits of glacial, fluviatile, and eolian origin that it holds the key to the solution of many important problems of the stratigraphy of that period. A brief outline of the Pleistocene geology of Nebraska with several illustrations is followed by a statement of and brief discussion of several of these problems. The main problems touched upon are: age of the Loveland loess, Pleistocene classification, correlation with Europe, the need for a better understanding of what is meant by "glacial" and "interglacial," the problem of glacial and interglacial loess, the duration of …

A Method For Comparing And Measuring The Drying Time Of Glues, William C. Strutz Aug 1939

A Method For Comparing And Measuring The Drying Time Of Glues, William C. Strutz

Bachelors’ Theses

The measurements or quality in glue testing are arbitrary and are of value only when compared to a standard glue or when comparing one glue to another. Glues have been used for hundreds of years, but it has been only in the last forty or fifty years that any scientific investigations of any consequence have been made. Prior to this time glues were made by rule of thumb by practical men who learned the art of glue making from other practical men in the business and by contact with the industry. "When the United States entered the Great War and …

Copper Chromium Oxide As A Catalyst In The Hydrogenation Of Castor Oil, Mary Sebaldus Rueger Aug 1939

Copper Chromium Oxide As A Catalyst In The Hydrogenation Of Castor Oil, Mary Sebaldus Rueger

Bachelors’ Theses

Catalysts are essential to most hydrogenation reactions. Very few hydrogenations occur in the absence of some sort of catalyst. Thus, the earlier work of Bergius on coal hydrogenation was non-catalytic, but more recently the process has become practically entirely catalytic thru the development of the I. G. Farbenindustrie in Germany.

A Comparative Study Of The Proteolytic Activity Of Trypsin On Various Gelatins, Louis Hinkle Coggs Aug 1939

A Comparative Study Of The Proteolytic Activity Of Trypsin On Various Gelatins, Louis Hinkle Coggs

Bachelors’ Theses

Since 1839, the viscosity of liquids has been measured by means of capillary tubes. However, it was not until the year 1846, that the results of Poiaeu1lle's research were :made known to the public. Because of the comprehensiveness of Poiseuille's work, the concept of the laws controlling viscometry flow is attributed to him. For one hundred rears the subject of viscometry has been studied by many. During these years the principle a propounded by Poiseuille have been verified in general, but various corrections and modifications of viscometers in regard to drainage, surface tension, liquid head, and kinetic energy have been …

The Purification Of Linolenic Acid Of Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization From Acetone, Sylvester Ralph Taterzynski May 1939

The Purification Of Linolenic Acid Of Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization From Acetone, Sylvester Ralph Taterzynski

Bachelors’ Theses

Recently the fat and oil chemists are concerning themselves with a more thorough analysis of the fats and oils. In former years chemists in this field seemed to be satisfied with a relatively superficial analysis, used especially in detecting adulteration of oils.

This lack of detailed- analysis was, in great part, due to the fact -that there was no good methods of separation and analysis and especially of the higher unsaturated fatty acids. Only generalizations and approximate calculations were made. However, in the past few years, a decided step has been made toward a far more detailed investigation of the …
