The Geology Of The Interstate Highway 244 And 44 Exchange, Kirkwood, Missouri, John Neil Thomas Jan 1965

The Geology Of The Interstate Highway 244 And 44 Exchange, Kirkwood, Missouri, John Neil Thomas

Masters Theses

"During the summer of 1964, construction was completed on the intersection of Interstate Highways 244, 44 and U.S. Highway 66, one mile southwest of Kirkwood, Missouri. during the construction of the interchange, numerous artificial exposures of rocks of the middle Mississippian Meramecian Series were exposed. This provided an excellent opportunity for examining fresh exposures near the type Meramecian Series. The formations of the area were studied, and startigraphic [sic] sections were prepared from three of the more complete sections that were measured and described. The highway cuts expose complete sections of the Warsaw and Salem formations, and the lower part …

Les Chauves-Souris Cavernicoles De La Suisse, Villy Aellen Jan 1965

Les Chauves-Souris Cavernicoles De La Suisse, Villy Aellen

International Journal of Speleology

Bats, familiar to speleologists, play an important part in animal ecology in caves. Indirectly by their guano, they provide a source of food for numerous cave-dwelling animals and directly, by their own more or less constant presence. 26 species of bats are known from Switzerland, 15 of which occur in caves. Miniopterus schreibersi is considered the only true cave-dweller. The exact distribution of the rare species, including those occurring outside caves, is found in the text and is also indicated on the accompanying maps.

Contribution À L'Étude De Certains Lithobiidae (Chilopoda) Des Grottes De Roumanie, Stefan Negrea Jan 1965

Contribution À L'Étude De Certains Lithobiidae (Chilopoda) Des Grottes De Roumanie, Stefan Negrea

International Journal of Speleology

This paper comprises the ecological and zoogeographical data of 21 systematic units of Lithobiidae coming from 100 Romanian caves (Transylvania, Banat, Oltenie and Dobroudja). Initially the author describes in a summarising way the provenance of the studied material, after which he exposes for every species the results of observations carried out by several authors and by himself. Finally he formulates the conclusions concerning ecology and biogeography resulting from his observations. These data are summarised in a synoptic table in which three species can be considered troglobionts, two of which are blind; these are Harpolithobius oltenicus Negrea; Lithobius decapolitus Matic, Negrea …

Faune Des Eaux Souterraines Saumâtres De L'Asie Centrale, J. A. Birstein, S. I. Ljovuschkin Jan 1965

Faune Des Eaux Souterraines Saumâtres De L'Asie Centrale, J. A. Birstein, S. I. Ljovuschkin

International Journal of Speleology

In the cave Kaptar-Khana (south-western Turkmenistan) was discovered a lake filled with water with a salinity of 11,68‰. This lake is inhabited by a fauna of marine origin - Foraminifera (three species), Molluscs (Pseudocaspia ljovuschkini sp.n.), Harpacticoida (genera Ectinosoma, Schizopera and Nitocra), Isopoda (Microcharon halophilus sp.n.) and possibly Nematoda (Oncholaimidae). The majority of the discovered species are related to species of circum-Mediterranean origin. Geological data do not permit to consider this fauna as a relict of any of the tertiary seas. The same applies to all other cases when animals of marine origin were discovered …

Recherches Phréatobiologiques Ii: La Capture Des Niphargus Adultes Par Le Procéde Des Sondages Karaman-Chappuis. Les Crues Et La Biocenose De La Nappe Phréatique, Constantin Motas, Eugène Serban Jan 1965

Recherches Phréatobiologiques Ii: La Capture Des Niphargus Adultes Par Le Procéde Des Sondages Karaman-Chappuis. Les Crues Et La Biocenose De La Nappe Phréatique, Constantin Motas, Eugène Serban

International Journal of Speleology

The present note calls into question the opinion of different authors concerning the presence or lack of adult Niphargus near the phreatic table (superior layer of phreatic water) in zones prospected by Karaman-Chappuis method. Our investigations have proved the reason for which Niphargus adults were less frequent in the superior layer of the phreatic water is rather concerned with our investigation means - which are very approximate - than with the ecological or ethological requirements of these animals. The assertion that the phreatic fauna performs downward migrations during the floods must be considered as doubtful. During floods it is impossible …

Algological Investigations In Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, H. J. Jones Jan 1965

Algological Investigations In Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, H. J. Jones

International Journal of Speleology

Algological investigations carried out in the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, revealed the presence of twenty-seven taxa representing all divisions of the Algae except the Pyrrhophyta and Phaeophyta; diatoms although observed in the samples were not dealt with in the present paper. One species, Oscillitoria clausiana spec. nov. and a form Lyngbya pusilla fa. tenuior fa. nov., both belonging to the Cyanophyta are new to science. In addition, several other rare and interesting algae were found. A comparison is made between the algal flora of the Mammoth Cave and algae found in several European caves. The ecology of the cavernicole algae is …

Diatoms From Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Sam L. Van Landingham Jan 1965

Diatoms From Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Sam L. Van Landingham

International Journal of Speleology

Samples collected in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, revealed the presence of a diversified but not too abundant diatom community in the cave. As the material was not subjected to culturing experiments but was investigated immediately after arrival, both in native and permanent preparations, it was possible to: 1. ascertain that the majority of the diatoms contained well developed, apparently healthy and functioning chloroplasts and 2. to get a rough estimate of the actual number of specimens present in a microhabitat. The identifications resulted in the recognition of 16 diatom taxa of which possibly 4 are new to science. Further studies are, …

Seed And Pasture Rates For New Dairy Pastures, F E. Ryan Jan 1965

Seed And Pasture Rates For New Dairy Pastures, F E. Ryan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE success or failure of pasture establishment on new land often depends on the interaction of rate of seeding and rate of superphosphate application.

Every year large areas of virgin land are cleared and sown to pasture in the higher rainfall areas, and all-too often the new pasture is not as successful as it should be because too little super is applied, and, in some cases, too little seed.

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie Jan 1965

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY THINGS must be considered in planning a feed lot.

The site must be well chosen, fencing, gates and yards must be adequate for the cattle carried and feeding and watering facilities should be of a high standard.

Other things to consider are the provision of shelter and shade for the cattle and buildings for feed storage and other purposes.

Anomers Of D-Galactosamine Benzoates, Robert Stanley Strong Jan 1965

Anomers Of D-Galactosamine Benzoates, Robert Stanley Strong

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

D-Galactosamine has been known as one of the rarer amino sugars, occurring widely distributed in small concentrations in living organisms. The biological importance of D-galactosamine and its derivatives was thought to justify a study of the chemical properties of this group of compounds. As a result of this study the reactions of D-galactosamine have been found to differ more than previously thought from those of D-glucosamine, the more common amino sugar

For this investigation D-galactosamine hydrochloride was isolated from chondroitin sulfate, a polysaccharide obtained from the cartilaginous tissues of animals. This was changed by appropriate reactions to the 1,3,4,6-tetra-0-benzoyl-N-carbobenzoxy-α-β-D-galactosamine (III). …

This is caused by the fact that we are unable to incorporate inflec¬tions of voice, mood, …

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender Aug 1964

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender

Theses and Dissertations

To investigate the possibility that thiamine has more than one vital role in the mammalian system, it was decided to use the antagonists pyrithiamine and oxythiamine, and to utilize carbon-14 labeled compounds to more effectively study the vitamin and the above-named antagonists. To make it more effective, we felt that perhaps differences between the localization of oxythiamine and pyrithiamine could be detected in the brain. We also considered and tested the possibility that either or both of the antagonists would alter the localization of thiamine. Essentially, two procedures were used in this study. One was a counting method and the …

Potential Pharmaceutical Derivatives Of Β-Aminoethylpiperazine, Brian A. Dementi Jul 1964

Potential Pharmaceutical Derivatives Of Β-Aminoethylpiperazine, Brian A. Dementi

Master's Theses

This thesis is concerned with the design and preparation of certain organic compounds which are expected to have medicinal properties. A discussion will be given which has essentially a two-fold purpose. The first is to discuss somewhat briefly the currently accepted method of rug design, and the second to show to what extent this method has been followed in the design of the compounds prepared.

Molybdenum-L-Histidine Complexes, Jiing-Yun Lee May 1964

Molybdenum-L-Histidine Complexes, Jiing-Yun Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

L- Histidine is a very important amino acid and is widely distributed in living systems. In the growth and multiplication of animal cells, it was found that L-histidine is one of the amino acids that must be present. From the kinetic studies of certain enzymes such as chymotrypsin and ribonuclease, it has been proposed that the imidazolyl group of the histidine residue may serve as the basic electron donor, and that the histidine residue in some cases may be the active site of the enzyme. The interactions of L-histidine with heavy metal ions, including Ni (II) (1), Zn (II) (1, …

The Interaction Of Water And Salt Flow In Unsaturated Soils, Mahmoud Hassan Abd-El Aziz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The movements of salt and water, particularly in fairly dry soils or compacted shales, are important processes in both agronomic studies and hydraulics of deep ground water which is important in the location of oil.

Correlation Of The Maternal Interest And Attitude Toward Breast Feeding Of Senior Students In A Selected School Of Nursing, Bonnie Boyts Wilkens May 1964

Correlation Of The Maternal Interest And Attitude Toward Breast Feeding Of Senior Students In A Selected School Of Nursing, Bonnie Boyts Wilkens

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey study was carried out at a selected baccalaureate school of nursing in an effort to find out if the maternal interest of senior students of nursing would affect their attitudes toward breast feeding. It was hypothesized that a student who scored high on maternal interest would have a positive attitude toward breast feeding and conversely a student who scored low on the maternal interest scale would have a negative attitude toward breast feeding. Maternal interest was measured by the use of twelve questions adapted from a questionnaire formulated by D. M. Levy, a prominent psychiatrist. Attitudes towards …

Simulation Of Mathematical Models In Genetic Analysis, Dinesh Govindal Patel May 1964

Simulation Of Mathematical Models In Genetic Analysis, Dinesh Govindal Patel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years a new field of statistics has become of importance in many branches of experimental science. This is the Monte Carlo Method, so called because it is based on simulation of stochastic processes. By stochastic process, it is meant some possible physical process in the real world that has some random or stochastic element in its structure. This is the subject which may appropriately be called the dynamic part of statistics or the statistics of "change," in contrast with the static statistical problems which have so far been the more systematically studied. Many obvious examples of such processes …

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen May 1964

The Reaction Of Hospitalized Children To Food, Lois Masat Magnussen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospital personnel are becoming more aware of the fact that hospitalization is traumatic to the emotional life of the young child. Since eating habits and emotions are so closely allied, it is probable that the young child's eating pattern will be affected during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the reaction of children between the ages of one through four to food during the first three days of hospitalization at the White Memorial Hospital. The method chosen to obtain this information was the descriptive survey. The tools used were a checklist for the researcher to record her …

Geomorphic Features And History Of The Lower Part Of Logan Canyon, Utah, Edmund J. Williams May 1964

Geomorphic Features And History Of The Lower Part Of Logan Canyon, Utah, Edmund J. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Logan Canyon is located east of Logan, Utah, in the Bear River Range. The lower part of Logan Canyon is considered that section of the canyon from its mouth upstream to Tony Grove Canyon, a distance of 22 miles1, Figure 1. Some tributary canyons of the lower part of Logan Canyon have been included in this investigation because of their relationship to Logan Canyon. Grassy Flat Canyon, a south tributary of Logan Canyon 4.4 miles from Logan, exhibits several geomorphic features related to the geology of Logan Canyon. Because of its extensive use and close association with Logan …

Bait Mixing Equipment Used In Vertebrate Pest Control, Percy F. Wright Mar 1964

Bait Mixing Equipment Used In Vertebrate Pest Control, Percy F. Wright

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

I would like to discuss with you the reason why agricultural commissioners are in the poison bait business. The following are excerpts from the Agricultural Code of the State of California. Section 100 describes a pest as follows: "Pest means any of the following that is, or is liable to be dangerous or detrimental to the agricultural industry of this State" and for the purpose of this talk only part two of this section is cited which states, "any form of animal life." This is the part which covers vertebrate pests. Section 102 states, "Each commissioner is an enforcing officer …

Forest Animal Damage Control, Nelson B. Kverno Mar 1964

Forest Animal Damage Control, Nelson B. Kverno

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

As a nation we have gained world recognition for our ability to utilize our resources. In forestry our greatest accomplishments have been in the mechanization of harvest methods and in improvements in forest products. The renewal of this resource has been our greatest neglect. Though the end of the 19th Century marked the beginning of the conservation movement, it was not until a half century later that the force of economics through the demands of a growing population made forest re-establishment more than just a desire. Conservation in itself is a Utopian concept which requires other motivating forces to make …

Rabbit Control, Warren V. Johnson Mar 1964

Rabbit Control, Warren V. Johnson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

Common California rabbits comprise two major genera. One, the genus Sylvilagus, or true rabbit, is represented by the cottontail and brush rabbits. The second of the two major genera is the genus Lepus, or hares. These are erroneously called the jack rabbits and snow shoe rabbits. The common jack rabbit, Lepus californicus, is the most familiar one throughout California and portions of some of the other western states. Because of their size and abundance, they are by far the most destructive - so emphasis will be placed on this species throughout the balance of this report. The diet of the …

Animal Control In New Zealand, Walter E. Howard Mar 1964

Animal Control In New Zealand, Walter E. Howard

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

New Zealand has a multiplicity of challenging animal-control problems, and all of them concern animals which man has intentionally introduced either for sport, food or fur. Since the beginning of European settlement in the 19th Century, approximately 53 species of mammals and 125 species of birds have been deliberately or accidentally introduced into New Zealand, and 34 birds and 31 mammals have become established (Wodzicki, 1950). The principal reasons the exotic big game animals (Riney, 1955), fur bearers and feral domestic livestock have been so destructive to certain habitats in New Zealand are because 1) some of the soils are …

Closing Remarks: Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference, Maynard W. Cummings Mar 1964

Closing Remarks: Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference, Maynard W. Cummings

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The Second Vertebrate Pest Control Conference is concluded. We hope it has been, in some measure, educational and worthwhile to each one of you. Many of you who are here attended the first conference, which was held in Sacramento two years ago. The obvious spirit displayed at that meeting, a genuine intense interest in absorbing new knowledge presented by the speakers, the warmth of making and renewing acquaintances among fellow workers and the enjoyment of the truly rare opportunity to exchange information in this special field, vertebrate pest control, has, I feel, been reenacted here. For these reasons this second …
