The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay
The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.
Conventional mice were challenged intraperitoneally with a single near LD50 dose of Listeria. Fecal Listeria were detected by collecting specimens from each mouse daily for the first 4 days and every second day thereafter. The feces was held at 7°C for 14 …

Chapter I
Introduction
Climate and the City
Studies made of temperature in and around cities have shown the climate of the city to be anomalous in relation to its regional climate. The extent of this anomalous condition and the reasons for its occurrence vary from city to city and from season to season. So many variable factors are present in the generation or regeneration of heat within the city that no study has yet satisfactorily explained the total factors involved, or has indicated the percentage for which any one factor might be responsible. This being the case, the only objective …
Isolation Of A Toxic Substance From Centaurea Repens, Merton E. Sprengel
Isolation Of A Toxic Substance From Centaurea Repens, Merton E. Sprengel
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A poisonous steroid-type compound was isolated from Centaurea repens. After extraction with absolute ethanol, removal of the solvent, addition of 2% HCl to precipitate the pigments, and filtering, the pH was adjusted to 9 with aqueous anunonia. This solution was exhaustively extracted with chloroform, evaporated to dryness, and extracted with ethyl ether.
This fraction was chromatographed on silica-gel plates, using 10:1 1,2-dichloroethane-methanol as the developer. The band at Rf 4.2 was removed and found toxic to mice. Labored, slow, gasping respiration and frequent involuntary muscular contractions became apparent within a few minutes following the intraperitoneal injection into each animal. Death …

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool
Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Nebraska is not to be classified as a forested state since less than 3 per cent of the area of the state is covered by natural timber. However our native forest trees are numerous as to different kinds and their distribution in the state is characterized by many interesting facts. The every-day life of our people is not so commonly associated with trees as is that of peoples in the more wooded states where lumbering and the wood-working industries are very important occupations because of the proximity of great forests of coniferous or broadleaved trees. The people of Nebraska use …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.
The results indicated that those on the 5-meal …
Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson
Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson
Faculty Honor Lectures
Several preceding honor lectures have dealt with water. The title of a recent one, "Water and Man," by Dr. Sterling Taylor closely resembles the one for this paper. Dr. Taylor's paper dealt primarily with the physical science of water. This one will consider the nature of the use of water by man and the technological and institutional structure related to that use. Thus there should be no serious overlap. My friends in the social sciences may be surprised, too, to find that somehow this lecture has spilled over into their territory. But engineering is the implementation of science and technology. …
The Course Or Behavior Of Applied Zinc To Soil Containing Different Levels Of Freshly Applied Organic Matter, Artnel Samuel Henry
The Course Or Behavior Of Applied Zinc To Soil Containing Different Levels Of Freshly Applied Organic Matter, Artnel Samuel Henry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Soil organic matter consists of a heterogenous mixture of plant, animal, and microbial material in various stages of decomposition. It possesses characteristics which at present are not very well known. Careful studies have been directed towards the behavior of organic matter as it affects plants directly and man indirectly. Consequently, much tire is devoted to its study from the point of metal inactivation and chelation, the earlier investigations failed to produce results worthy of the efforts expended, so a loss of interest in the continued pursuit of knowledge resulted, about two decades ago when it was learned that many polyvalent …
The Influence Of Organic Matter And Ph On Transformations Of Nitrites To Elemental Nitrogen, Mohammad A. Rashid
The Influence Of Organic Matter And Ph On Transformations Of Nitrites To Elemental Nitrogen, Mohammad A. Rashid
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Nitrogen occupies an important and prominent place in plant and animal nutrition. Large quantities are required by plants and must be available in the soil. Recently the use of nitrogenous fertilizers has increased manyfold. In view of the importance of this element in crop production, even greater use is anticipated in the coming years. In order to make full use of the applied nitrogen, continued investigations of soil-nitrogen relationship are imperative; however, this element presents many complex and challenging problems to investigators.
Simultaneous Flow Of Heat And Water In Plant Tissue, Gaylon Sanford Campbell
Simultaneous Flow Of Heat And Water In Plant Tissue, Gaylon Sanford Campbell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although biological phenomena may be partially described in a general way without the use of mathematics and physics, the experimental results may be more meaningful if they are analyzed on the basis of physical and mathematical laws. The complexity of biological systems has made the application to them of mathematics and physics rather difficult, and only recently has much progress been made. Although it has yet been possible to describe only a few simple biological systems by actual equations, a great deal of qualitative information may be obtained by applying physics and mathematics. Russell (1960, p. 439) said

Fisheries Report No 3 - Western Australian Freshwater Fisheries, Donald D. Francois
Fisheries Report No 3 - Western Australian Freshwater Fisheries, Donald D. Francois
Fisheries Research Reports
Most of the Australian States have a comprehensive system of inland waterways, Western Australia, however, is in a less fortunate position. True, the maps of the State show many rivers, but in much of the southern, more populous part, with no summer rain and no winter snow, the majority are virtually a chain of waterholes during the long summer months. At the same time, in a relatively small section in the south-west corner, there is a series of permanent streams flowing through what was originally dense forest. But apart from the three indigenous freshwater crustaceans, the marron (Cherax tenuimanus), the …

Piggery Septic System, N E. Macintyre
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ONE of the problems of intensive houses for pigs is the disposal of the dung and urine.
If proper arrangements are not made to remove this, it soon accumulates in an offensive pile at one end of the piggery, making an excellent breeding ground for flies.
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Egg Shell Quality, R J. Bishop
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Recent overseas work and local industry developments indicate that the calcium content of feed for laying hens in Western Australia should be increased to achieve satisfactory egg shell strength.
Age, temperature and breeding are other important influences on egg shell quality.
The Relationship Of Flooding And Saline Water Tables, Stanley Thomas Smith
The Relationship Of Flooding And Saline Water Tables, Stanley Thomas Smith
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN Western Australia there are several ways in which salt manifests itself but the most serious and extensive of these is in the valley systems where shallow saline water tables occur.
This type of salt problem is called "valley waterlogging" and occurs in most of the flat valleys throughout the wheatbelt of W.A.
Dieldrin Residues In Eggs And Fat Of Penned Pheasant Hens, Donald Wayne Lamb
Dieldrin Residues In Eggs And Fat Of Penned Pheasant Hens, Donald Wayne Lamb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
At present, there is considerable interest in the effects of insecticides upon our wildlife populations. It is well known that chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides are present in tissues and eggs of birds that receive these chemicals in their diets. Some workers, for example Gene11y and Rudd (1956) and DeWitt (1956), studied the effects of different levels of ingested insecticides on the reproduction of game birds. Additional studies are needed to relate the amount of insecticide in the diet to the level in the egg and that in turn to reproduction and effects on young birds. Work on pheasants is of special …

The Activity Of Succinic Dehydrogenase And Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase In Cell-Free Preparations Of Hygrophorous Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta
Masters Theses
"The enzyme indole acetic acid oxidase is produced by the fungus Hygrophorous conicus when it is grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA).
The rate of growth and the rate of formation of the enzyme IAA oxidase by H.conicus were studied in different media. Of these, a nitrate medium containing 0.5 per cent Yeast extract (Y.E.) was found to be the best for the production of H.conicus …
Limnology Of Three Farm Ponds In South-Central South Dakota, Larry Kim Graham
Limnology Of Three Farm Ponds In South-Central South Dakota, Larry Kim Graham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of three farm ponds in south-central South Dakota were studied from June 1964 until December 1965. Maximum water temperature at the surface reached 25.2 C, while water temperatures at the bottom of the ponds were about 2 to 4C lower than the surface. Light transmission was influenced by turbidity but generally penetrated to the bottom of the ponds except during periods of cloudy ice and snow cover. Dissolved oxygen was near saturation during periods of open water. Most chemical ions in the ponds increased annually from a winter minimum to a spring maximum. Total dissolved …

A Preliminary Study On The Effects Of Organic Pollution Of Banners Corner Cave, Virginia, John R. Holsinger
International Journal of Speleology
Four pools were observed in Banners Corner Cave, Russell County, Virginia, over a 28 month period from November 1961 to February 1964. Three of these pools were visibly polluted with sewage which had seeped into the cave from septic tanks located on the hill above. All four of these pools, at one time or another during the study, contained large populations of planarians, Phagocata subterranea Hyman and isopods, Asellus recurvatus Steeves. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses of the pool waters indicated that oxygen tension is a low as 2.8 mg./l. in one pool and that coliforms and other forms of bacteria …
Ecology And Distribution Of Foraminifers Of A Traverse In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Faiz Nassir Thomas
Ecology And Distribution Of Foraminifers Of A Traverse In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Faiz Nassir Thomas
Masters Theses
"Foraminiferal populations have been analyzed from five bottom samples along a traverse in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, approximately 27⁰20' to 97⁰15' north latitude and 97⁰20' to 97⁰05' west longitude. Eighty-eight species and twenty-nine genera, belonging to eighteen families, were recorded. Species were identified and described.
Statistical studies indicate that probably five benthonic foraminiferal depth facies could be recognized in the area at the following approximate depths: 4 fathoms, 4-8 fathoms, 8-12 fathoms, 12-16 fathoms, and 16-20 fathoms. Determination of facies is based largely on the range of species. The frequency distribution of species of foraminifers was plotted against change …
Origin And Factors Affecting Distribution Of Solid Oil In Mid-Western Missouri, Rafid Abdul-Halim Jasim
Origin And Factors Affecting Distribution Of Solid Oil In Mid-Western Missouri, Rafid Abdul-Halim Jasim
Masters Theses
"A textural analysis was made of the heavy oil-bearing sandstones in the Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Warner and Bluejacket formations of mid-western Missouri in order to determine and compare their depositional environments.
Grains of the Bluejacket sandstones are smaller and more rounded than grains of the Warner sandstones. The Bluejacket sandstone is also better sorted than the Warner sandstone.
The Bluejacket sandstone is thin-bedded; the Warner is mostly massive-bedded. These differences in bedding between the two formations have affected distribution of oil in the area of study.
Both the Bluejacket and Warner sandstones are better sorted than the Warrensburg sandstones; the …
Mobility And Behavior Of Raccoons In Eastern South Dakota, George L. Geis
Mobility And Behavior Of Raccoons In Eastern South Dakota, George L. Geis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Increasing populations of raccoons (Procyon lotor) and reports of depredation on upland game, poultry, and garden crops indicated a need for research concerning behavior, mobility, and range of raccoons. The raccoon has seemingly adapted to the dry environment of the northern agricultural plains. According to records, the original range apparently did not extend into South Dakota. Lewis and Clark did not report raccoons when they traveled along the Missouri River in 1804 and 1806 (Coues, 1893). Although Visher (1918) noted that raccoons were not rare in wooded areas along streams in western South Dakota, he made no mention of …
