Effects Of Grazing Systems On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Habitat, Samuel N. Mattise
Effects Of Grazing Systems On Sharp-Tailed Grouse Habitat, Samuel N. Mattise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Effects of grazing systems on sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi) nesting and brooding habitats in the Little Missouri National Grasslands of southwestern North Dakota were evaluated. Three grazing allotments with deferred-rotation grazing systems and three allotments with season-long grazing systems were randomly selected for study. Fifty measurements of vegetation were taken using the height-density pole on line transects in each of three range sites; rolling grasslands, upland grasslands and lowland draws. Vegetation was sampled in late spring, summer and fall of 1976 and early spring of 1977. Average height-density of vegetation for the season-long grazing system was significantly greater than …

Wildlife Habitat In The James River Valley, South Dakota, L. Paul Schneider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A wildlife habitat inventory was conducted on the 12 485 ha study area of the James River floodplain in north-eastern South Dakota. Included were vegetation mapping, small mammal trapping, waterfowl breeding pair counts, waterfowl brood counts, bird census routes, and general observations. Natural vegetation consisted of 3181 ha of grassland, 2002 ha of woodland, 1115 ha of savannah, and 392 ha of marshland. Small mammal trapping revealed low densities of mostly white-footed mice (Peromyscus spp.). No vegetation type was more valuable to small mammals than any other. Waterfowl breeding pairs, mostly mallard, blue-winged teal, and wood duck, numbered 244 in …

Studies On The Role Of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation In "Natural" Water Purification By Aquatic Ecosystems, John Calkins, Jeanne A. Barcelo, Perry Grigsby, Stephen Martin
KWRRI Research Reports
The possibility that pollution might deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and intensify solar UV at the earth's surface focuses attention on the role of solar UV in the various ecosystems at the earth's surface. Previous studies suggested that solar UV might contribute to bacterial die off in wastewater and the studies reported here were directed toward elucidating the action of solar UV in "natural" waters.
It has been assumed that solar UV action on aquatic ecosystems can be evaluated (using proper models) on the basis of the following four independently measurable quantities: I) the intensity of solar UV at the …

Breeding Biology And Prey Selection Of Ferruginous Hawks In Northwestern South Dakota, Charles L. Blair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study of the breeding biology and prey selection of ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis) was conducted in northwestern South Dakota during 1976 and 1977. Twenty four pairs were located in 1976 and 18 pairs attempted to nest; 17 pairs located in 1977 attempted to nest. The ecological density of breeding pairs was approximately one per 100 km2. Young fledged per nesting attempt averaged 1.89 in 1976 and 2.29 in 1977. All but one nest were located in unbroken, lightly grazed prairie and all were situated on hills, buttes, or river cutbanks. General nest orientation was toward the south and west. …
Studies On The Gas Given Off By Yeast When It Goes From An Anaerobic To Aerobic Metabolism, David C. Potts
Studies On The Gas Given Off By Yeast When It Goes From An Anaerobic To Aerobic Metabolism, David C. Potts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Several investigators have observed that when yeast cells (yeast) go from a strictly anaerobic environment to an aerobic oner and glucose is added a negative value is recorded on the manometer. This phenomenon indicates that a gas has been given off by the yeast. The purpose of this research was to identify the gas and determine how it arises.
Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley
Molybdenum(V) Solutions In Hydrobromic Acid, Edwin Charles Perley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the coordination chemistry of molybdenum has increased greatly in recent years because of the discovery that molybdenum plays an active role in several redox enzymes. Model systems have been devised to gain insight into the function of molybdenum in these enzymes. Most model systems are believed to contain an oxomolybdate(V) dimer in equilibrium with a redox active monomer or dimer. A relatively simple system that shows important similarities to model systems is a molybdenum(V) solution in hydrobromic or hydrochloric acid. As in the model systems, these solutions are believed to contain monomers and dimers in equilibrium. The equilibria …

Geology Of The Flathead Formation (Middle Cambrian) On The Perimeter Of The Bighorn Basin, Beartooth Mountains, And Little Belt Mountains In Wyoming And Montana, Joel A. Degenstein
Theses and Dissertations
The Flathead Formation, which is 4 to 60 metres thick in the middle and northern Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Montana, contains cross-bedded and parallel-bedded, quartz sandstone. The formation contains marginal-marine and shallow-marine sediment that was deposited unconformably on Precambrian crystalline and sedimentary rock by an eastward-transgressing sea during middle Cambrian time.
This field study of the Flathead Formation on the perimeter of the Bighorn Basin, Beartooth Mountains, and Little Belt Mountains reveals that the formation consists of three intervals. The lower interval contains medium to very coarse, pebbly, cross-bedded sandstone and conglomerate. The middle interval contains medium to coarse, …
Comprehensive Plan For Fish And Wildlife On Nebraska National Forest System Lands
Comprehensive Plan For Fish And Wildlife On Nebraska National Forest System Lands
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Wildlife and fish are integral and functional parts of forest and grassland environments. Application of this plan should improve and maintain habitats, as well as the types and populations of wildlife species within them. Various types of habitat manipulation are effective means of improving such environments to produce a diversified and sustained supply of wildlife. and fish. Direct habitat improvement and coordination with other resource management programs will be used to help realize the management objectives as they concern lands under Forest Service administration. However, this plan is not a "recipe book," requiring specified ingredients or actions. Rather it provides …

Observations Sur Les Comportements De Lucifuga Subterranea Poey (Pisces, Ophidiidae), Poisson Cavernicole De Cuba, G. Thinès, M. Piquemal
International Journal of Speleology
The swimming behaviour and the sensory reactions of the blind Cuban cave fish Lucifuga subterranea Poey were studied on a single individual during a period of 6 months. Mechanical stimulation elicits but slight reactions. Gustatory substances in solution elicit fairly typical motor responses which are not followed by systematic exploration behaviour, the same being true for stimulations by odours of prey. The presence of moving prey provokes an oriented exploration with a slight plunging movement of the kind evidenced in other cave fishes. Actual seizing of the prey requires an active approach of the latter towards the anterior part of …

The Chemical And Biological Effect Of A Gulf Stream Intrusion Off St. Augustine, Florida, Larry P. Atkinson, Gustav-Adolf Paffenhöfer, William M. Dunstan
CCPO Publications
During a 3-day anchor station in shelf waters off St. Augustine, Florida we observed the effect of an intruding mass of deeper Gulf Stream water. The shelf waters were relatively low in nutrients and salinity while the Gulf Stream waters were high in salinity and nutrients. Onshore currents correlated with increases in nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations.
The advection of higher nutrient Gulf Stream water coincided with high chlorophyll (∼ mg chl a m−3) concentrations and dense populations of Phaeocystis pouchetii (up to 3.12 × 10°1−1). Zooplankton sampling was impossible in the bottom layer because of the …

Movement And Migration Patterns Of Red-Winged Blackbirds: A Continental Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer
Movement And Migration Patterns Of Red-Winged Blackbirds: A Continental Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
From 1924 through 1974, about 11,000 recoveries accumulated from the banding of over 700,000 Red-winged Blackbirds(Agelaius phoeniceus) in North America. A few studies have examined some of these data for specific localities during certain times of the year; however, no attempt has been made to examine the total recovery data to compile a general picture of continental movement and migration patterns. Increasing attention is being given to blackbird (Icteridae) and Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) populations in North America because of their reported crop depredations, health hazards, and nuisance aspects, especially when congregating in large roosts (Meanley,1975;Graham, 1976). Solutions to these problems …

The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel
The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel
Masters Theses
Extensive studies have been reported on the air pollutant sulphur dioxide (SO2), and its effects on vascular and nonvascular plants. It has been shown to interrupt normal physiology, metabolism, reproduction, and alter the plant’s morphology.
Of the cryptogams, lichens have been extensively used as biological indicators of air pollution. More recently, bryophytes have been shown to be as sensitive to contaminates as lichens, and may exhibit responses to the pollutant similar to those of vascular and nonvascular plants. The threshold sensitivity of these cryptogams is about 0.5 ppm over a 12 hour period. However no study to date …

Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade
Direct Determination Of Pentachlorophenol By Differential Pulse Polarography, Albert L. Wade
Theses and Dissertations
Concern over environmental contamination leading to the introduction of pentachlorophenol into human and animal systems has resulted in the need for a rapid and direct method for determining trace concentrations of this highly toxic compound. A direct electrochemical procedure has been developed for determining trace conccentrations of this phenol dovm to 0.27 ppm. This method uses the electrochemical techniques of differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode, and differential pulse voltammetry at the carbon paste electrode to reduce pentachlorophenol for this determination. Cyclic voltammetry at the hanging mercury drop electrode has been used to characterize the reaction behavior of …

Based on the equations of continuity and motion for sediment transport and the dynamic equation of spatially varied open channel flow, a computer simulation of erosion is developed. The water source for the erosion simulation may be rainfall or snowmelt. To provide snowmelt a computer simulation giving the rate of snowmelt from limited climatic data has been adapted to work conjunctively with the erosion model to provide a dynamic solution to erosion and overland flow, from precipitation and other limited climatic data. The computer simulation model has been tested using climatic data at and near the phosphate mine in Southeastern …

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The logical steps performed when doing a factor analysis can be classified into three operation s. The first step concerns the exact mode of analysis and involves the type of centering, scaling and formation o f sums of squares . The second step involves extraction of initial factors. The algebraic basis of the factors are rotated in the last step to obtain a more easily interpreted set of factors. At each step several different methods have been suggested and appear in the literature. Two primary modes of factor analysis are commonly used an d they are denoted as R-mode and …

Studies Of The Cave Crayfish, Orconectes Inermis Inermis Cope (Decapoda, Cambaridae). Part Iv: Mark-Recapture Procedures For Estimating Population Size And Movements Of Individuals, Horton H. Hobbs Iii
International Journal of Speleology
Several methods for permanently marking cavernicolous crayfishes were investigated prior to initiation of field work in Pless Cave, Lawrence County, Indiana. Internally injected ink complemented with external “painting” proved to be a most satisfactory tagging procedure. During the two-year study period 211 individuals of the troglobitic crayfish Orconectes inermis inermis Cope were marked; 96 tagged individuals were recaptured at least once, a 46% recapture rate. The population size was estimated to be 1586 +/- 79 (95% C.L.) over the 540 m subterranean stream study area and remained relatively stable during the period of 1970 to 1972. The home range of …

In Constant temperature the troglobite beetles Aphaenops cerberus and pluto, Geotrechus orpheus and Speonomus diecki are aperiodically active. By periodogram analysis neither circadian nor ultradian or infradian periodic components can be found. Moreover there are no relevant correlations between the lengths of successive activity bursts and rest pauses. Consequently the activity patterns are stochasticly structured. In cases with constancy of activity respectively rest behaviour the probabilities for the transition from activity to rest and from rest to activity are computed using the Frequency histograms of lengths of activity bursts and rest pauses. The transition probability is time-invariant if the …
