Analysis Of Arkansas Fur Harvest Records - 1942-1984: I. State And Regional Accounts, Gary A. Heidt, James H. Peck, Tiny Sheldon, Joseph D. Clark

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fur harvest records maintained by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission from 1942-1984 summarized the number of pelts sold by region (Ozark Mountains, Ouachita Mountains, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Delta) and the average price per pelt for 16 furbearers. Analysis of these records showed that in the 1979-80 trapping season (the record year for both harvest and value both in Arkansas and the nation), the value of the Arkansas fur harvest ranked 14th nationally (2.12% of total national value). Fur harvests in Arkansas were high in the 1940's, declined in the 1950's and 1960's and then experienced a rapid …

Industrial Simulation With Animation, Edward T. Hammerand Jan 1985

Industrial Simulation With Animation, Edward T. Hammerand

Masters Theses

"This thesis examines and evaluates the new simulation language PCModel. Prior to the arrival of PCModel, simulation via computer typically resulted in pages of statistics compiled over the duration of the simulation. PCModel's approach is to simulate the model on the display before the user in real time. Additionally, user interaction is supported to allow changes to be made throughout the simulation run.

The evaluation of PCModel is accomplished through inspection of a pair of examples already simulated in a conventional simulation language. The examples show the relative strong and weak points of the language, as well as demonstrating how …

A Pleistocene Jaguar From North-Central Nebraska, C. B. Schultz, Larry D. Martin, M. R. Schultz

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A nearly complete skull of an extinct jaguar, Panthera onca augusta from the Mullen Assemblage in Cherry County, Nebraska, provides new information concerning North American jaguars. The presence of Cervalces, Symbos, Tapirus, and Panthera onca in the Mullen Assemblage seems to indicate an extension of the Pleistocene spruce taiga into north-central Nebraska in the Early to Middle Illinoian.

Biological Effects Of Dredging In An Offshore Borrow Area, Robert O. Johnson, Walter G. Nelson Jan 1985

Biological Effects Of Dredging In An Offshore Borrow Area, Robert O. Johnson, Walter G. Nelson

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Changes in benthic fauna were monitored following excavation of an offshore borrow area in the vicinity of Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida. Sampling stations were established along 2 transects located in the borrow area, 1 control transect north of the borrow area, and 1 control transect south of the borrow area. Results suggest that relatively larger reductions in abundance, but not number of species, of the benthic fauna occurred in the borrow area following dredging as compared with the controls. Therefore the decrease observed appears greater than can be accounted for on the basis of seasonal changes alone. Both parameters returned …

Sex-Specific Feeding Habits Of Brown-Headed Cowbirds In Northern Ohio In January, Richard A. Dolbeer, Cynthia R. Smith

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined the stomach contents of 57 brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) collected from a roost in Erie Co., Ohio, on 12 January 1983. Corn was by far the predominant food, averaging 66% of the stomach contents by weight. Seeds from at least five grasses, but primarily Setaria spp., were the second most abundant food category, averaging 21% of the stomach contents. Ragweed {Ambrosia artemisiifolia) seeds (2.6%) were third. Male cowbirds consumed more corn than did the smaller females, whereas females consumed more of the smaller grass seeds. The abundance of corn in harvested fields and feedlots, combined with mild winter …

Fisheries Report No 71 - An Investigation Of The Mortality Of The Pearl Oyster, Pinctada Maxima, In Western Australia, Rand Dybdahl, David A. Pass

Fisheries Research Reports

A three year investigation into the cause of abnormally high mortality rates of the pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, on the cultured pearl industry's lease sites in the North West of Western Australia was completed on 30 June 71983. The objective of this study was to determine environmental, physiological and pathological factors predisposing farm oysters to excessive Levels of mortality and, if possible, make recommendations to alleviate this problem.

As mass mortalities may have complex causes, complementary field and laboratory studies were instigated. The culture industry's method of collection, transportation and farm husbandry were examined. Environmental parameters were monitored. Various empirical …

A Study Of Trihalomethane Precursors In Deer Creek Reservoir, Megan J. White, V. Dean Adams

Reports

Deer Creek Reservoir and tributaries were monitored from May to December 1983 in a study of the occurrence of trihalomethane (THM) precursors in the reservoir and nutrient dynamics of the reservoir system. Microcosms were used to study the effect of the following parameters on THM precursor production in the reservoir system: phosphorus loading, sediment, algal growth, and application of algicide. Additionally, THM precursor concentrations of interstitial water were analyzed in reservoir and microcosm sediment samples. Microcosms treated with ahigh phosphorus loading (70 ug/1) had THM precursor concentrations significantly higher than those measured in microcosms treated with a low phosphorus loading …

Preliminary Identification, Analysis, And Classification Of Odor-Causing Mechanisms Influenced By Decreasing Salinity Of The Great Salt Lake, C. Earl Israelsen, Darwin L. Sorensen, Alberta J. Seierstad, Charlotte Brennard Jan 1985

Preliminary Identification, Analysis, And Classification Of Odor-Causing Mechanisms Influenced By Decreasing Salinity Of The Great Salt Lake, C. Earl Israelsen, Darwin L. Sorensen, Alberta J. Seierstad, Charlotte Brennard

Reports

Introduction: The rising level of the Great Salt Lake has received a great deal of attention because of the resulting physical damage to adjoining properties, threatened distruption of major transportation facilities, and environmental damage to feeding and resting areas for migratory waterfowl. Another problem of growing concern is that some zones of the lake are producing odors that are objectionable to nearby populated areas. These odors are most offensive during the warm summer months and appear to be increasing with the rising levels and decreasing salinity of the lake water. This report presents the approach taken and the findings of …

Reports

Preface: Water Activites for Elementary Children is based upon the assumption that children learn best by doing. In education, and especilly in science, talking is not necessarily teaching. The most desireable types of learning involve direct, first hand experience, not just a teacher's interpretation of these experiences. This set of learning experiences has been designed for teachers, teachers-in-training, and children, Each concept includes background information for the teacher and learning activities for the children. Lessons are designed so taht a teacher can successfully teach a unit or lession with a minimum of knowledge, preparation, and equipmnet. Most of the suggested …

Computer Aided Simulation Of A Heating, Ventilating, And Air Conditioning System In A Building, Sunil Shrikrishna Kulkarni

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Godwin Life Science Building on the Old Dominion University campus presents an interesting problem in terms of energy conservation. The building is the maximum energy resource consumer on the campus, having a criterion value of 234 KBtu/sq.ft-year (2657 MJoules/sq. rneter-year). A Simplified Energy Analysis Method (ASEAM) loads and systems computer program was used to simulate the building and its heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) plant in order to understand the building's high annual energy resource consumption rate, and to devise ways to overcome it. The main goal was to assess and propose energy conservation improvements to the existing …

The Anatomy And Histology Of The Alimentary Tract Of The Blind Catfish Horaglanis Krishnai Menon, T. V. Anna Mercy, N. Krishna Pillai

International Journal of Speleology

H. krishnai is a blind catfish inhabiting the dug-out wells at Kottavam Kerala, South India. Studies on the alimentary tract of the fish show that, the alimentary tract, though typically teleostean, shows several adaptive modifications. The bulbous stomach helps in storing food which is helpful in an environment chronically deficient in food. The ileo-rectal sphincter helps in retaining the digested food in the intestine for a long duration to facilitate maximum absorption. This is very helpful as the intestine is short. The liver is well developed.

Artificial Intelligence: Myths And Realities, Hugo D'Alarcao Dec 1984

Artificial Intelligence: Myths And Realities, Hugo D'Alarcao

Bridgewater Review

Artificial intelligence the name conjures images of mechanical monsters, the Golem, Dr. Frankenstein’s creation and the rebellious computer Hal. We have always been fascinated by the possibility of creating a machine in our image, but this fascination is often accompanied by apprehension. We fear losing control of our creation and suspect that it might turn against us. It is this duality, this conflict between the desire to create and the fear of the consequences of the creation that has been so successfully exploited by writers. It is also, in part, this fascination that has recently brought the field of Artificial …

A Proposal To Fertilize The Overton Arm And Gregg Basin Areas Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson Nov 1984

A Proposal To Fertilize The Overton Arm And Gregg Basin Areas Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

Several limnological studies have been conducted in Lake Mead during the past decade. The recent studies clearly show that most of Lake Mead is deficient in nutrients, especially phosphorus, and very low in productivity. The reservoir-wide average total phosphorus concentration for 1981 - 1982 was only 9 mg/m3. This is below levels found In most oligotrophic lakes and reservoirs. Algal biomass, as measured by chlorophyll-a, averaged only 1.5 mg/m3. That also places Lake Mead in the oligotrophic range. Transparency, as measured by a Secchi disc, averaged 9-5 m in Lake Mead during 1981-1982. That far exceeds …

Success In Rat Control In Kuwait, K.S. Al-Sanei, T.M. Zaghloul, A.M. Salit, M.T. Omar, M.M. Balba

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

The preliminary rat survey prior to the actual attack phase of Rat Control Program in Kuwait revealed an infestation rate with the Norway rat, Rattus norveqicus, in buildings ranging between 32.7% and 70.7%. The comparatively high infestation was observed in 92.5% of Kuwait buildings. Moreover the infestation reached 99% in certain districts of the country. This high infestation was associated with an increase in rat-borne diseases particularly murine typhus, salmonellosis, rat-bite fever and certain parasitic diseases.

A programme for rodent control in Kuwait was initiated through a political decision by the cabinet which gave the full responsibility of rodent …

Hazards To Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels And Associated Secondary Hazard Potential From Strychnine For Forest Secondary Pocket Gophers, R. Michael Anthony, Gerald D. Lindsey, James Evans

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

Radio telemetry and capture-recapture techniques were used to evaluate the hazards to golden-mantled ground squirrels ( Spermophilus lateralis) from hand baiting with 0.5% strychnine-treated for western pocket gophers (Thomomys mazama) on conifer plantations in eastern Oregon. Toxicology data were collected on field-killed and caged ground squirrels and on caged mink (Mustela vison, great horned owls (Bubo virginianus), and red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). Ground squirrel populations were reduced 50% to 75% following underground baiting for pocket gophers. Maximum amount of strychnine found in cheek pouches and carcass of a field-killed golden-mantled ground …

Commingling Of Norway And Roof Rats With Native Rodents, Rex O. Baker Sep 1984

Commingling Of Norway And Roof Rats With Native Rodents, Rex O. Baker

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

The ecology of plague relies on the intermixing (commingling) of animal hosts and their ectoparasites. There has been a noticeable increase in commingling of rats and ground squirrels in Southern California in recent years. This paper discusses this phenomenon in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, where it occurs, how it results from man's activities, and the ecology of varying locations. The role of fleas as vectors of plague and the intermixing of fleas between hosts are discussed. Action to reduce the incidence of commingling and the threat of plague to the urban society is addressed.

Efficacy Of Three Anticoagulant Rodenticides For The Control Of Poison-Shy Rattus Rattus, Devendra Bhardwaj, Ishwar Prakash Sep 1984

Efficacy Of Three Anticoagulant Rodenticides For The Control Of Poison-Shy Rattus Rattus, Devendra Bhardwaj, Ishwar Prakash

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

House rats (Rattus rattus) which do not consume a lethal dose of zinc phosphide develop poison-shyness after a single exposure. The surviving poison-shy rats cannot be baited again with zinc phosphide for about three months. Poison-shy rats were separately given anticoagulant baits (brodifa-coum 0.005%, coumatetralyl and warfarin 0.025%) in no-choice tests. The first two anticoagulants were found to be the most efficient ones. It was observed that those R. rattus which had consumed 56.7 mg/kg or more zinc phosphide died sooner (P < 0.05 to 0.1) after anticoagulant poisoning when compared with normal rats. It is conjectured that prothrombin inhibition is accelerated in the liver of poison-shy R. rattus due to the action of phosphine present in the earlier ingested sublethal dose of …
