Dynamic Facial Reanimation For Facial Palsy: The Oman Experience, Sony P. Varghese, Shaikhan Nm Al Hashmi, Al Anood Al Hadhrami
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: The goal of facial reanimation for facial palsy is to restore resting facial symmetry and dynamic facial motion that mirrors the opposite side as closely as possible. This study aimed to evaluate the restoration of oral commissure symmetry at rest and during excursion among patients with facial paralysis treated with free gracilis muscle transfer. Methods: This study included 9 patients who underwent facial reanimation with free gracilis muscle transfer at Khoula Hospital, Muscat, Oman, from 2019 to 2022. Children under 14 underwent a 2-stage surgery, while those above 14 underwent single-stage reconstruction. Results: The average age among the cohorts …
Efficacy Of 6% Hydroxyethyl Starch And 2% Lidocaine In Reducing The Pain Of Propofol Injection: A Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Trial, Tapan K. Sahoo, Saurabh Trivedi, Monika Pedhadiva, Seema Gupta, Gaurav Trivedi
Efficacy Of 6% Hydroxyethyl Starch And 2% Lidocaine In Reducing The Pain Of Propofol Injection: A Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Trial, Tapan K. Sahoo, Saurabh Trivedi, Monika Pedhadiva, Seema Gupta, Gaurav Trivedi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Propofol administration is associated with pain, mediated by the activation of vascular endothelium. Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) inhibits endothelial membrane activation by various nociceptive substances. Thus, this study hypothesised that pre-administration of HES can reduce pain on propofol administration. This study aimed to compare the proportion of patients with no pain on propofol administration and to compare the severity of pain and any change in pre- and post-induction haemodynamic variables. Methods: This prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted at Chirayu Medical College & Hospital, Bhopal, India, between August 2023 and December 2023 and included patients undergoing elective surgery under …
Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain
Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain
Theological Studies Faculty Works
This paper examines the naming episode in the Quran's Adam story, in which God teaches Adam “the names, all of them”, to counter the angels' objection to the creation of the human creature on the basis that he will “spread corruption … and will shed blood”. I try to show that the traditional understanding of this narrative in Western scholarship, which connects it ultimately to the Genesis 2 episode in which Adam names all the creatures of the land and sky, fails to do justice to a close reading of the quranic text itself. Instead, I argue for an alternative …

Novel Cuprotosis-Related Gene Signature: A Prognostic Indicator And Regulator Of The Glioma Immune Microenvironment, Dongming Gao, Youyuan Bao, Wenyin Shi, Lei Li, Liang Gao
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
Background: Glioma is a primary malignant brain tumor with a poor prognosis. Glioma-related biomarkers need to be identified to enable the personalized treatment of and predict the prognosis of glioma patients. Cuproptosis is an unusual mechanism of cell death, and is closely associated with disease progression and the immune-microenvironment of the tumor. However, the function of cuproptosis in glioma is still unclear, therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the role of cuproptosis-related genes in gliomas.
Methods: We examined the relationship between cuproptosis and glioma using the clinical and expression data of glioma tumors from The Cancer Genome …

Mechanisms Of Memory-Supporting Neuronal Dynamics In Hippocampal Area Ca3, Yiding Li, John J Briguglio, Sandro Romani, Jeffrey C Magee
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Hippocampal CA3 is central to memory formation and retrieval. Although various network mechanisms have been proposed, direct evidence is lacking. Using intracellular Vm recordings and optogenetic manipulations in behaving mice, we found that CA3 place-field activity is produced by a symmetric form of behavioral timescale synaptic plasticity (BTSP) at recurrent synapses among CA3 pyramidal neurons but not at synapses from the dentate gyrus (DG). Additional manipulations revealed that excitatory input from the entorhinal cortex (EC) but not the DG was required to update place cell activity based on the animal’s movement. These data were captured by a computational model that …
Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna
Beyond Climate In Placencia, Belize: Navigating Environmental Change In The Anthropocene, Rory E. Mckenna
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Examining opportunities for climate resilience requires an evaluation of lived experiences of environmental change which benefits from transdisciplinary perspectives. This research examines those experiences through the lens of anthropogenic change which allows for a critical focus on local conditions of environmental change specific to Placencia Village, Belize, over time. An anthropology of the anthropocene framing shifts the focus from the results of the global phenomenon responsible for climate change to the implications of local human-caused environmental change on natural systems, human-environment relationships and dynamics, and the future trajectories of these relationships. Through the use of interviews, go-alongs, participatory mapping, transdisciplinary …

Mutations reducing the function of MYT1L, a neuron-specific transcription factor, are associated with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder. MYT1L is used as a pro-neural factor in fibroblast-to-neuron transdifferentiation and is hypothesized to influence neuronal specification and maturation, but it is not clear which neuron types are most impacted by MYT1L loss. In this study, we profile 412,132 nuclei from the forebrains of wild-type and MYT1L-deficient mice at three developmental stages: E14 at the peak of neurogenesis, P1 when cortical neurons have been born, and P21 when neurons are maturing, to examine the role of MYT1L levels on neuronal development. MYT1L deficiency …
Ginhawa As Ethic Of Panatà: Body Politics And The Devotion To The Black Nazarene, Mark Joseph T. Calano
Ginhawa As Ethic Of Panatà: Body Politics And The Devotion To The Black Nazarene, Mark Joseph T. Calano
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Operating within the ambiguity of the sacred and the secular, the devotion to the Black Nazarene in Quiapo is expressed in the different body performances and prayers directed towards the poón (image). These devotions, narratives, and norms make possible not only the performance, but also the celebration and repetition of faith experiences mediated by the body. The paper investigates the linguistic and body performances that makes possible one of the most attended religious performances in the Philippines in three parts. The first part looks into the body dynamics involved when participating in the devotion to the Black Nazarene. On the …
Discontinuity And Continuity Of Devotion The Virgin Of Guadalupe From Mexico To Makati, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Discontinuity And Continuity Of Devotion The Virgin Of Guadalupe From Mexico To Makati, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper echoes the question of Horacio de la Costa in the talk that he gave in 1968: “What is the meaning of Makati?” The talk intended to guide the development of the Business District by the principles of Catholic social teaching. This paper tries to provide a path to ascertain the meaning of Makati by contextualizing it within two barangays: Guadalupe Viejo and Guadalupe Nuevo. The paper performs a philosophical understanding of a city by situating it within the history of religions and the philosophy of religion. In the first part, it rehearses the history of devotion to the …
Toward A Filipino Christology, Michael Demetrius H. Asis
Toward A Filipino Christology, Michael Demetrius H. Asis
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Current research on the Historical Jesus challenges Filipino Christology to do a “Christology from Below”—emphasizing the struggles and humanity of Jesus in first century Palestine as an appropriate starting point for a meaningful and relevant Filipino Christology today. Are our current Jesus images mere projections of our deep desire to fashion him in our own image? Or are they grounded on real, historical facets of his life? Any re-appropriation of the memory of the Jesus of history must, for the most part, become honest appropriations of the spirit of Jesus’ historical life and message, which focused on realizing the Kingdom …

The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy
The Stranger Society: The Case Of Economic And Social Development In The Tropics, Peter Murphy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The economic and social prosperity of nations are usually attributed to functional requirements—such as honest government, effective transport and communication networks, health care and education—and development strategies such as investment in infrastructure. However, beyond a certain point peak economic and social success relies as much on human ingenuity as on capital investment. The article proposes that the world’s most prosperous societies have three recurring characteristics that foster such ingenuity: (1) they are all closely connected to trading portals, (2) they nourish paradoxical belief systems that underscore a proclivity for intellectual abstraction and pattern-based interaction, and (3) they are stranger societies …
Neoliberal Capitalism, Asean Integration And Commodified Education: A Deleuzian Critique, Raniel Sm. Reyes
Neoliberal Capitalism, Asean Integration And Commodified Education: A Deleuzian Critique, Raniel Sm. Reyes
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This article launches a Deleuzian critical diagnosis of neoliberal capitalism, which through the ASEAN Integration Project, expounds on capitalism’s effects on universities or on Philippine Higher Education. Strategists of neoliberal capitalism, whom Deleuze and Guattari call the “poor technician[s] of desire,” persuade underdeveloped or developing countries to see in their resources for financial stability or education reform, a “lack” that needs immediate attention and find solution in the global call for liberalization, deregulation, and privatization. Once this psychoanalytic ploy achieves success, these countries become naive preys of neoliberal capitalism. They interpret this phenomenon as a contemporary fascism that manipulates the …

"The Political Philosophy That Kant Did Not Write": The Potential For Politics And Political Community In Kant's Third Critique, Rizalino Noble Malabed
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In his Critique of Judgement, Immanuel Kant claims that judgement provides (1) a transition from the theoretical to the practical and unifies philosophy and (2) the principles for an alternative politics and founds the ideal political community. Vital to understanding Kant’s second claim is the idea of sensus communis, which arises from his contention that the judgement of taste appears as universal because taste not only presupposes common sense but is also community sense. This article shows that in his discussion, which moves from reflective judgement, to the judging subject, and to the sensus communis, Kant argues for a potential …
The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In his first Manifesto for Philosophy, Alain Badiou alludes to the idea of sutures occurring between philosophy and the more dominant disciplines like science, politics, art, and psychoanalysis after Hegel. This phenomenon is inextricably linked to discourses about the end of philosophy and the linguistic turn in hermeneutic, analytic, and postmodern philosophies. In Badiou’s analysis one finds that in so far as these traditions are concerned, systematic philosophy is henceforth impossible. In this work, I take Badiou’s said allusion seriously and argue that after totalitarianism and the two world wars, an antipathy towards systematic philosophy has led to what I …

A Vocabulary Of Philippine Food And Well-Being, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
A preliminary study of culinary words during the Spanish colonial era reveals multiple dimensions to feeding. Entries in dictionaries of Philippine languages compiled from 1613 to 1895 reveal kalusugan as food for the body, kaginhawaan as sustenance for the soul, and nayánayá as nutriment for the social self. The tripartite diet was a recipe for happiness and contentment. It is a legacy to review when designing contemporary strategies for national well-being.

The Land Of Fairies Of J. R. R. Tolkien: Faërie As The “Middle Earth” Between The World Of Senses And The World Of Ideas, Diego Klautau
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article delves into J. R. R. Tolkien's essay "On Fairy-Stories" with the aim of outlining a giving hermeneutics for the metaphor of "Faërie," the Elfland, in dialogue with the philosophical tradition of Ancient Greece – specially with Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "De Anima" and "Poetics", and also the medieval reference of Aquinas’ “Summa Theologica”. The historical context of early 20th-century England and J. R. R. Tolkien's biography assure that he belonged to a Catholic religious and philosophical tradition that claimed the so-called realistic philosophy as the foundation for understanding the world. From this theoretical-methodological approach, one finds a dual …
The Problem Of Technology In Maruyama Masao's Notion Of Modernity In Japan's "Overcoming Modernity" Debate In 1942, Koga Takao
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The purpose of this essay is to rethink the meaning of modernity through an examination of Maruyama’s defense of modernity during the “Overcoming of Modernity” Debate in Japan in 1942. I will initially propose that Maruyama understood the opponents of modernity as ultra-nationalists who were merely defending an ideological justification for Japan’s war. However, Maruyama defined “modern thinking” (kindaiteki shii) in terms of personal autonomy. His understanding of modernity as a mental attitude led to his failure to consider the technological aspect of this debate. After considering the various intellectual positions on this issue, I shall argue that a democratic …
The Function Of Memory In Understanding And Addressing Cultures Of Impunity, Veronica Jereza
The Function Of Memory In Understanding And Addressing Cultures Of Impunity, Veronica Jereza
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Recent psychological studies show that systemic oppression may be understood as trauma, which is aggravated in the context of a culture of impunity. Cultures of impunity, then, are a problem not only of legal justice and collective trauma but also of personal memory and its fragmentation. Following developments in trauma studies and Paul Ricoeur’s Memory, History, Forgetting and Lectures on Ideology and Utopia, cultures of impunity may be understood as an institutionalized forced forgetfulness with destructive and self-reinforcing effects on personal and collective memory. This paper aims to present a generic account of the function of memory in understanding and …

A Vision Of Hell: Walter Benjamin's Angelus Novus And The Catastrophe Of Progress, Pregiosa Regina Ang De Joya
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Before his untimely death in 1940, the German philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote an essay, entitled “Theses on the Philosophy of History,” marking his recovery from the shock of the Hitler-Stalin non-aggression pact. This study reflects on the philosophical and historical significance of this essay, unraveling Benjamin’s critique of Marxism as a critique of progress. Progress, which the angel of history sees as a storm coming from paradise, has caused a growing pile of rubble of historical blunders and environmental disasters. This uncritical submission to progress, however, can be seen not only in the blind confidence of the communists and the …

Perceived Risk Mediation Of Website Quality In Online Clothing Shopping In A South African Township, Khathutshelo M. Makhitha, Rodney G. Duffett
The African Journal of Information Systems
South Africa lags behind other economies regarding online shopping adoption. Extant literature has focused on the influence of risk factors on consumers’ intention to shop online. However, few studies have considered the effect that mediating factors can have on relationships between other factors related to online shopping. It is particularly important to determine the mediation effect of perceived risk factors on the relationship between perceived website quality and intentions to shop online. A quantitative survey was used to collect data from 300 online shoppers who purchase clothing online and are located in the Soweto Township in Gauteng, South Africa. Perceived …
Jewish Pilgrimage, Temple Sacrifices And ‘Disposable’ Cooking Pots, Omri Abadi
Jewish Pilgrimage, Temple Sacrifices And ‘Disposable’ Cooking Pots, Omri Abadi
'Atiqot
From the time of Herod until the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, there was a steady increase in the number of pilgrims in Jerusalem, reaching tens of thousands during each festival. Extensive supplies of ritually pure food prepared in pure cooking vessels were required for the pilgrims’ sacrificial meals in the Temple and throughout the city. A large quantity of cooking pots had to be supplied within a short period of time, and these vessels were like ‘disposable’ cooking pots as they had to be broken at the end of the pilgrimage. In this paper, I suggest identifying the …

Byzantine And Early Islamic Malacological Remains From Building 900 In The Southern Tyropoeon Valley, Inbar Ktalav
'Atiqot
The malacological remains presented in this article shed light on the trade and culinary habits of the inhabitants of Jerusalem during the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods. All the shells were brought to the site from distant sources, such as the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Nile River, indicating trade connections. The shells seem to have been utilized for aesthetic purposes and for consumption, as also recorded in other excavations in Jerusalem.
Byzantine And Early Islamic Faunal Remains From Building 900 In The Southern Tyropoeon Valley, Nimrod Marom
Byzantine And Early Islamic Faunal Remains From Building 900 In The Southern Tyropoeon Valley, Nimrod Marom
'Atiqot
The excavation in the western part of the City of David uncovered small assemblages of animal remains from the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods, attesting to similar consumption patterns in both occupation phases. The basic suite of domesticates is characteristic of urban settlements in late antiquity, comprising caprines, pigs and cattle, as well as fowl, and possibly fish. This varied diet points to the high-status of the inhabitants of the building. The public and commercial production of pork in the Early Islamic period is noteworthy.

Trash Or Cache? The Textile Evidence From The NahׅAl ‘Omer Middens As An Indicator Of Early Islamic-Period Trade Networks Along Israel’S Silk Road, Orit Shamir, Berit Hildebrandt, Roy Galili, Nofar Shamir, Guy Bar-Oz
'Atiqot
Middens provide an important source of data for exploring the history of ancient settlements. Excavations at the middens of Naḥal ‘Omer, an Early Islamic way-station in the ‘Arava desert, yielded a treasure-trove of textiles, such as silk and cotton, including ikats probably imported from India or South Arabia. The Early Islamic period witnessed a flourishing of artistic and cultural achievements, with textiles playing a central role in expressing creativity. The Silk Road, Mediterranean trade routes and connections with India and Central Asia facilitated the movement of textiles and inspired cross-cultural influences. This period probably witnessed a “textile revolution” that was …

Murabba‘at Cave II is situated in the cliffy area on the northern bank of Naḥal Darga, about 2 km west of the Dead Sea. It is a complex cave formed by the dissolution of Shivṭa-Formation limestone below the water table. Its total length is approximately 90 m and it has three levels. Previous excavations have shown the cave to be one of the richest in the Judean Desert in terms of finds from various periods. Among the many finds was an ancient wooden box containing a Ptolemaic coin-hoard from the reign of Ptolemy VI, which was discovered in a crevice …
