Control Of Ring-Billed Gulls And Herring Gulls Nesting At Urban And Industrial Sites In Ontario, 1987-1990, Hans Blokpoel, Gaston D. Tessier Feb 1991

Control Of Ring-Billed Gulls And Herring Gulls Nesting At Urban And Industrial Sites In Ontario, 1987-1990, Hans Blokpoel, Gaston D. Tessier

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Large numbers of ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) and much smaller numbers of herring gulls (L. argentatus) have begun to nest at several industrial and urban sites in the Canadian Great Lakes causing a flight safety problem (nesting at end of a runway), disrupting commercial operations (nesting on roads and storage yards), and creating nuisances (noise and smell of the colony and defecations on equipment). Gulls were prevented from nesting by scaring (using tethered birds of prey, moving vehicles, and foot patrols equipped with cracker shells) or by physically excluding them (by installing monofilament lines). At some …

Sheep And Goat Losses To Predators In The United States, Guy Connolly Feb 1991

Sheep And Goat Losses To Predators In The United States, Guy Connolly

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

This paper analyzes and compares 3 recent estimates of the value of sheep, lambs, and goats killed by predators in the United States. The estimates, by Pearson (1986a,b), the General Accounting Office (GAO 1990), and the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS 1991), varied from $18 million to $59.7 million annually due to differences in scope, assumptions, data, and estimation methods of the 3 studies. Pearson's and NASS's estimates of the value of sheep and lambs lost to predators in 17 western states totaled $38.3 million and $18.3 million in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The difference between these estimates was attributed …

Synopsis Of A Course On The Principles Of Wildlife Damage Management, Michael R. Conover

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Five courses were offered by Utah State University's Program in Wildlife Damage Management (WDM) in 1991: (1) Principles of WDM, (2) WDM Techniques, (3) Wildlife Livestock Relationships, (4) WDM Policy, and (5) Urban Wildlife Management. Principles of WDM was the introductory course in this series. It was an upper-division course; most students were in the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In this paper, I provide a synopsis of this course hoping such information will be useful to other people designing a course on this topic.

Rather than using a textbook for Principles of WDM, students were required to read …

An avian/airport study was conducted by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health h Service, Animal Damage Control (ADC) from 9 February 1989-18 March 1990 to evaluate near-tern bird control Standiford Field Airport (SDF), Louisville, Kentucky. Field surveys were performed on SDF and the Outer Loop Lands to gather data on both daily and seasonal trends in bird activity and effectiveness of management efforts employed by operator to control bird activity. Data for high-interest species groups were sorted according to site, time of day, and month. Raptors were present at the airport and landfill throughout the year. …

Modification Of Raccoon Food Resources In Parks To Reduce Rabies Risks To Humans, Stephen C. Frantz Feb 1991

Modification Of Raccoon Food Resources In Parks To Reduce Rabies Risks To Humans, Stephen C. Frantz

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

In May 1990, the mid-Atlantic raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies epizootic crossed New York State's southern border. By the end of the year, 84 rabid raccoons had been identified from a 400-km "front" in the State's southern tier of counties. By about mid-February 1991, the number of confirmed rabid raccoons increased to 134. Major metropolitan areas are threatened and predictions for the future indicate a pressing need for information and services by various government agencies. High-risk areas currently are park campgrounds, but will be extended as the outbreak progresses to include urban parks and those residential communities having large raccoon populations. …

Raptors And Racing Pigeons: An Analysis Of Avian Predation On Dome Pigeons, James B. Armstrong Feb 1991

Raptors And Racing Pigeons: An Analysis Of Avian Predation On Dome Pigeons, James B. Armstrong

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

Relationships among pigeons, raptors, and man are well documented. However, there has been little effort to study conflict between pigeon fanciers and raptors that prey upon racing pigeons. A questionnaire concerning the characteristics raptor predation on pigeons was distributed to members of the American Racing Pigeon Union (ARPU). Three hundred and sixty seven responses were received from ARPU members in 39 states. Cooper's hawks were the most often implicated raptor. Lots located at the edge of wooded areas experienced the most attacks (n =182). Most fanciers (n =154) indicated that raptor attacks were distributed throughout the day.

Gas Chromatographic Method For Determination Of 28 Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted From A Sewerage Plant, Yeming Sun

Theses

In this study, 28 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority Plant (LRSA) were monitered. The determination by gas chromatography (GC) is presented. This work emphasizes the collection of whole air samples, using a canister-based sampling system with cryogenic concentration. An appropriate temperature program was selected to obtain the best sample separation. The procedure for the identification of 28 standard gas mixture was achieved by comparing the chromatograms of sample with those of the specific groups of target compounds, as well as by comparing the sample with the results from GC Mass spectrometeric analysis. Because of …

An Analysis Of East Pond And The Serpentine Watersheds In Relation To Water Quality, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: East and North Ponds (2011, 1999, 1996, 1991)

The Belgrade Lakes in central Maine are important local ecological and recreational resources. The belgrade chain includes the following lakes: East Pond, North Pond, Great Pond, Long Pond, Salmon Lake and Messalonskee Lake. These lakes are all interconnected within the system driving into the Kennebec River through the Messalonskee Stream (Garrity and Putnam, 1971). East Pond is the first lake in the lake chain and it plays a pivotal role in influencing subsequent lakes. Therefore, the water quality of this lake is important not only to East Pond residents but to the residents of the entire lakes region.

Ground Water Quality And Management In Minnesota, Jeanette H. Leete Jan 1991

Ground Water Quality And Management In Minnesota, Jeanette H. Leete

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Minnesota is known for its abundant surface water - lakes, rivers, and streams - and much emphasis is placed on managing these priceless resources, yet it is ground water that supplies drinking water to about 75 percent of the state's population, and ground water that agriculture depends on for 88 percent of irrigation water. While ground water quality can be and is impacted by activities at the land surface, the greatest proportion of Minnesota's ground water is still suitable for most uses.

Over 175 units and several levels of government are involved in water resource protection and planning. Choices are …

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([3H] GA1, [3H] GA4) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [3H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (KD= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …

Mariculture Management For Pohnpei State, Federated States Of Micronesia, Kevin Brooks Foster Jan 1991

Mariculture Management For Pohnpei State, Federated States Of Micronesia, Kevin Brooks Foster

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Marine Resources Division of Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia is currently engaged in development activities that include the establishment of family scale mariculture projects for community members of remote villages and outer islands. The goal of this undertaking is to supplement subsistence and income generation ventures for community members through the wise use and exploitation of the marine environment. These aims may be jeopardized unless a management plan is devised that reflects the customary marine resource practices as embraced by islanders from each community. The intent of this thesis projects is to devise a mariculture management model that …

Gender consideration is an essential component of fishery development activities. The purpose of this thesis is to help guide planners and decision-makers who are concerned with understanding the role of women in fisheries development in general as well as in the Republic of Indonesia. Thus, it is partially based upon field research conducted in Indonesia among fishing communities which are representative of different types of fisheries. Justification for research concerning the role of women in the fisheries sector and the reasons why women should be included in development policy and planning are presented in Chapter I. The general research setting, …

The Gulf Of California As A Large Marine Ecosystem, Patricia A. Morrissey Jan 1991

The Gulf Of California As A Large Marine Ecosystem, Patricia A. Morrissey

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Large marine regions characterized by unique bathymetry, hydrography and productivity, within which marine populations have adapted reproductive, growth, and feeding strategies constitute large marine ecosystems (LME) (Sherman and Alexander, 1986). The Gulf of California a semi-enclosed sea off the western coast of Mexico qualifies as a LME as it presents physical and biological characteristics not found in the adjoining Pacific. This area sustains the largest commercial fishery in the country which is the sardine fishery. the sardine population resident in the Gulf of California has coupled its reproductive and migration strategies to the environment of this region. Fluctuations of the …

Prospects For Fisheries Development In West Africa, Steven K. Ireland Jan 1991

Prospects For Fisheries Development In West Africa, Steven K. Ireland

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The production of food is a primary concern for the countries of Africa. Marine fisheries can contribute toward alleviating undernutrition and provide employment opportunities in developing countries. In West Africa there are substantial marine fisheries resources but there is a need for development and improved management of these resources. Fisheries development efforts have thus far achieved limited success in the region. However, there is considerable potential for increasing the contribution of fisheries to economic development if the problems of fisheries development can be overcome.

Possibilities For A Common Fisheries Development And Management Policy For The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States (O.E.C.S.), Daven C. Joseph Jan 1991

Possibilities For A Common Fisheries Development And Management Policy For The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States (O.E.C.S.), Daven C. Joseph

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The fisheries resources within the EEZs of countries in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States is not being exploited at their maximum sustainable yield. Fisheries development has however been hampered by a history of these states, little or no sectoral development planning. If member states are to realize any increased socio-economic growth in the fisheries sector, it is imperative that a common fisheries management and development strategy be implemented by these states, in an effort to rationalize the use of scarce financial and technical resources. Such a strategy would involve the pursuance of common goals and objectives and the provision …

The Siia: A Mechanism For Addressing Pollution Problems Plaguing New Jersey's Coastal Zone, Laurie J. Sands Jan 1991

The Siia: A Mechanism For Addressing Pollution Problems Plaguing New Jersey's Coastal Zone, Laurie J. Sands

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

New Jersey has been plagued in recent years by beach closures resulting from elevated bacteria levels after rainfall events. The Sewage Infrastructure Improvement Act (SIIA) was adopted to correct these problems by addressing both point and nonpoint sources of pollution found in discharges of stormwater. However, there are problems with the SIIA such as overly burdensome requirements, limited resources and lack of future funding and direction. This research identifies these problems and examines existing State and federal legislation to find the necessary components to correct these concerns. The results show that by pursuing a legislative amendment to the SIIA, redistributing …

Striped Bass Management In Rhode Island, Thomas N. Fetherston Ii Jan 1991

Striped Bass Management In Rhode Island, Thomas N. Fetherston Ii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The management of highly migratory marine species is a difficult and complex task. No creature better represents the myriad problems faced by those attempting interstate fisheries management than the striped bass of the Atlantic coast. Their high stock levels in the late 1960s attracted unprecedented attention from commercial and sport fishermen alike. The dramatic crash of these stocks in the late 1970s, subsequent attempts at coastwide management, eventual Federal intervention and finally the rebound of the Atlantic striped bass population is an interesting case study. This paper will focus on what transpired in the State of Rhode Island during this …

How Windbreaks Work, James R. Brandle, Sherman Finch Jan 1991

How Windbreaks Work, James R. Brandle, Sherman Finch

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Windbreaks are barriers used to reduce and redirect wind. They usually consist of trees and shrubs, but may also be perennial or annual crops and grasses, fences, or other materials. The reduction in wind speed behind a windbreak modifies the environmental conditions or microclimate in the sheltered zone.

As wind blows against a windbreak, air pressure builds up on the windward side (the side towards the wind), and large quantities of air move up and over the top or around the ends of the windbreak. Windbreak structure – height, density, number of rows, species, composition, length, orientation, and continuity – …

Windbreak Establishment, Patricia Boehner, James R. Brandle, Sherman Finch

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A successful windbreak planting depends on proper establishment and care during the first few years after planting. Time spent in site preparation, weed control, and replanting is repaid many times during the lifetime of the windbreak. Take no shortcuts in the planning and establishment of your windbreak.

Windbreaks are investments in the future value of your property. Each windbreak system is unique and your windbreak should be designed for your site and objectives. Your local conservation office can provide help in designing and installing your windbreak. These organizations can also help with recommendations on where to buy planting stock, and …

Windbreaks And Wildlife, Ron J. Johnson, Mary M. Beck, James R. Brandle

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Windbreaks can support wildlife that add beauty and pleasure to our lives. They also sustain birds that eat insect pests, improve hunting opportunities, and provide a focal point for family outdoor activities. The world around us would be less appealing without the stimulation - the color, sounds, tracks, and mystery - of wild creatures; windbreaks help wildlife and in some areas are essential to survival of the wildlife we enjoy. You can add wildlife benefits to windbreak plantings whether your main goal is to shelter crops, livestock, + roads, or a home or farmstead.

This publication provides an overview of …

Windbreaks In Sustainable Agricultural Systems, Vernon C. Quam, John Gardner, James R. Brandle, Teresa K. Boes Jan 1991

Windbreaks In Sustainable Agricultural Systems, Vernon C. Quam, John Gardner, James R. Brandle, Teresa K. Boes

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Sustainable agriculture is a system of whole-farm resource use balanced with whole-farm productivity. The overall level of productivity achieved is dependent upon the ability to coordinate and manage simultaneously the soil, water, plant, and animal resources within climatic and economic limits. Both the kind and amount of plants and animals supported by the system are important and play significant roles, both individually and collectively in maintaining a healthy farm environment. In the future, integrated systems will help reduce human impact on resources while providing sufficient supplies of high quality food and fiber.

Windbreaks provide protection for people, animals, buildings, crops, …
