Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior Of Tio_2/Ha Composite Coating On Medical Titanium In Tyrode's Physiological Solution, Li-Li Kong, Long-Xiang Lin, Rong-Gang Hu, Fan Zhang, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
Titanium and its alloys have been widely used as medical implant materials because of their good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the physiological corrosion of metal will release metal ions, resulting in toxic and side effects. In this paper,in order to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium, and to enhance its bioactivity and osseointegration, the surface modification of titamum were performed.Using eletrochemical methods Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were applied to study the electrochemical corrosion behavior of TiO2 /HA composite coating. It is indicated that the corrosion resistance of the prepared TiO2 /Ti material in Tyrode's physiological solution is improved because of the enhanced surface barrier.

Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Numeracy
This paper compares the academic performance of students in three similar elementary statistics courses taught by the same instructor, but with the lab component differing among the three. One course is traditionally taught without a lab component; the second with a lab component using scenarios and an extensive use of technology, but without explicit coordination between lab and lecture; and the third using a lab component with an extensive use of technology that carefully coordinates the lab with the lecture. Extensive use of technology means, in this context, using Minitab software in the lab section, doing homework and quizzes using …

Telecommunications Liberalisation In Africa: Proposed Regulatory Model For The Sadc Region, Z. N. Jobodwana
Telecommunications Liberalisation In Africa: Proposed Regulatory Model For The Sadc Region, Z. N. Jobodwana
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The liberalisation of the telecommunication industry in Africa, and the further development of the region’s physical infrastructure was accompanied by the further development of Africa’s information, communication and technology infrastructure. Competition within the industry stimulated heavy economic investment in other sectors of the economy. The outcome of liberalisation also included the establishment of community-based structures that continue to enable communities to manage their own development and gain access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in an unprecedented manner. The telecommunication infrastructure further stimulated the fast development of other related services, for example, ecommerce and mobile commerce (m-commerce), e-government, internet banking, …

Test For Spatio-Temporal Counts Being Poisson, Haiyan Chen, Howard H. Stratton
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The new Log-Linear Test (TL) is proposed to identify when the Poisson model fails for a collection of count random variables. TL is shown to have better rejection rate with small sample size and essentially the same power compared to a classical Fisher-Bohning’s Statistic TF for standard alternatives to Poisson.

Mammut Borsoni (Hays 1834) From The Early Pliocene Of Husnicioara (Mehedinţi District, Romania), Vlad Codrea, Florina Diaconu
Studia UBB Geologia
A mastodon tooth has been found at Husnicioara coal open pit, in Mehedinţi district (southwestern Romania). It originates from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) gravel and sand deposits lying just above the coal bed IV, mined in this quarry. The tooth exposing zygodont features undoubtedly belongs to Mammut borsoni (“Borson’s mastodont”). Although this species is very common in the Pliocene vertebrate faunas from this part of Europe, until now it was missing from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) assemblage’s lists in our country.

Interaction Of Mefenamic Acid With Cobalt(Ii) Ions In Aqueous Media: Evaluation Via Classic And Response Surface Methods, Mohammad Edrissi, Nima Razzaghi Asl, Behrooz Madjidi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Mefenamic acid reacts with cobalt(II) ions in aqueous alkaline medium to form a highly stable deep brown complex at ambient temperature. The complexation process was optimized in terms of pH, temperature, agitation rate, and contact time using classical studies. A response surface method based on Box-Behnken design was used to statistically model the complexation reaction and investigate factor effects along with their interactions. A quadratic model was developed using experimental data with a correlation coefficient of 0.9609. Numerical optimization was performed to achieve the optimum solutions of factor combinations. The results of the classical investigation and statistical method were in …

The Clean Water Act In Maine: Goals And Financing, Andrew Fisk
Maine Policy Review
Andrew Fisk gives an overview of the history of the federal Clean Water Act and of Maine’s efforts to improve the quality of the state’s lakes, rivers and streams. He describes how the Clean Water Act works and how its provisions are implemented. While the quality of Maine’s water bodies has improved greatly, much work still remains to be done in the areas of rain and stormwater runoff and mercury pollution, and in having adequate financing and infrastructure over the long term.

Analysis Of Information Remaining On Hand Held Devices Offered For Sale On The Second Hand, Andy Jones, Craig Valli, Iain Sutherland
Analysis Of Information Remaining On Hand Held Devices Offered For Sale On The Second Hand, Andy Jones, Craig Valli, Iain Sutherland
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The ownership and use of mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants and other hand held devices is now ubiquitous both for home and business use. The majority of these devices have a high initial cost, a relatively short period before they become obsolescent and a relatively low second hand value. As a result of this, when the devices are replaced, there are indications that they tend to be discarded. As technology has continued to develop, it has led to an increasing diversity in the number and type of devices that are available, and the processing power and the storage capacity of …

Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widespread in North America at the time of European settlement. However, river otters were extirpated from most of Iowa in the early 1900s due to habitat degradation and unregulated harvest. In 1985, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources began an effort to restore the river otter population throughout the state, including a pilot study of survival to determine if establishment was feasible. Annual survival was estimated to be 86% during the pilot study. River otters dispersed an average of about 11 km from the point of release and exhibited habitat use typical for the …

Effects Of The Shape Of The Radiation Dose-Response Curve On Public Acceptance Of Radiation And Nuclear Energy, Audeen W. Fentiman
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “The public generally accepts the premise that exposure to radiation can have an undesirable effect. Furthermore, it believes that as the radiation dose increases, the magnitude of the effect will increase. On the other hand, while the background radiation dose varies from a few hundred millirem/year (a few millisieverts/yr) in some places to a few thousand millirem/yr (tens of millisieverts/yr) in others, researchers have been unable to find a correlation between the level of background radiation and incidence of cancer or other maladies attributable to radiation.

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Participants in epidemiologic studies may not represent statistically independent observations. We consider modifications to conventional analyses of 2×2 tables, including Fisher’s exact test and confidence intervals, to account for correlated observations in this setting. An example is provided, assessing the robustness of conclusions from a published analysis.

Ecological Problems With Iowa's Invasive And Introduced Fishes, Neil P. Bernstein, John R. Olson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Since the time of European settlement, at least 59 non-indigenous fish species have been introduced, reached, or moved within Iowa waters. At least 28 nonnative fish species have been introduced into, or reported from Iowa waters since settlement. Of that number, 10 are established at this time through natural reproduction. In addition, many species of native fishes have been translocated within the state, and we provide documentation for 31 of these species. Two translocated species, gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) and yellow bass (Marone mississippiensis), have had adverse impacts on Iowa's aquatic ecosystems. While many introductions are thought to be benign, …

The Natural Role Of Mathematics In The Sciences: How Maharishi's Vedic Science Answers The Question Of The Unreasonable Effectiveness Of Mathematics In The Sciences, Catherine A. Gorini
Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal
Mathematicians and scientists have for a long time tried to understand why mathematics, a subjective creation of the human intellect, is so effective in the sciences, which study the objective, physical world. Satisfactory reasons have not been found because there has not been a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the subjective and the objective aspects of life. In this paper we will see that Maharishi’s Vedic Science, by explaining the link between the subjective realm where mathematics is located and the objective world that science examines, can resolve this problem in a natural way.

Herpetofaunal Abundance And Distribution In Northern Minnesota: Contributions Of Ecological Land Units And Assessment Of Sampling Methodology, Gabrielle Yaunches, S. R. Winterstein, H. Campa Iii, B. J. Kernohan, J. B. Haufler
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Herpetofaunal species distributions need to be understood and mapped using landscape descriptions that incorporate important habitat features and ecological processes. An ecosystem management effort in northern Minnesota is characterizing a landscape as a coarse filter for ecological communities. The coarse filter approach involves looking at communities in different successional stages and habitat types in a region (Haufler et al. 1996). Documenting distributions and abundances of herpetofauna using this coarse filter approach will allow data about these species to be incorporated in landscape planning efforts.

A Bramatherium Skull (Giraffidae, Mammalia) From The Late Miocene Of Kavakdere (Central Turkey). Biogeographic And Phylogenetic Implications, Deniş Geraads, Erksin Güleç
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
A sub-adult skull from the Late Miocene of Kavakdere, desciribed and referred to the Indian genus Bramatherium. increases the similarity between the Indian sub-continent and the Greco-Iranian province. The contents and subdivisions of the subfamily Sivatheriinae are reviewed, with 2 main groups being recognized, based upon the homologies and position of horns. They are perhaps both of western European origin.

Genetic Divergence And Evolutionary Times: Calibrating A Protein Clock For South-European Stenasellus Species (Crustacea Isopoda), Valerio Ketmaier, Roberto Argano, Marina Cobolli, Elvira De Matthaeis
International Journal of Speleology
We studied genetic divergence in a group of exclusively stygobiont isopods of the family Stenasellidae. In particular, we assessed evolutionary relationships among several populations of Stenasellus racovitzai and Stenasellus virei. To place this study in a phylogenetic context. we used another species of Stenasellus, S. assorgiai, as an outgroup. S. racovitzai occurs in Corsica, Sardinia and in the fossil islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, while S. virei is a polytypic species widely distributed in the central France and Pyrenean area. This vicariant distribution is believed to be the result of the disjunction of the Sardinia-Corsica microplate from …
