The Teacher As Liberator: An Analysis Of The Philosophy Of Education Of Friedrich Nietzsche (1973), Ann Margaret Sharp Jan 1973

The Teacher As Liberator: An Analysis Of The Philosophy Of Education Of Friedrich Nietzsche (1973), Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Ann Margaret Sharp

This dissertation will be an exegesis of the educational thought of Friedrich Nietzsche with the central focus on his conception of the teacher as liberator. This will involve an analysis of his conception of freedom, an analysis which involves a grasp of his philosophy as a whole. Nietzsche never wrote a systematic educational philosophy. Yet, in a certain sense, education is his primary concern. "I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome.... The overman is the meaning of the earth." In Nietzsche's view, the conscious production of the overman, a person who is characterized by a …

Kant, Quine, And Human Experience, Kenton Machina Oct 1972

Kant, Quine, And Human Experience, Kenton Machina

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

In this paper I provide an account of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason approach to how humans automatically shape the interpretation of their sense experiences in order to create a picture of themselves enduring in and interacting with an objective world. I contrast Kant's view with those of W.V. O.Quine, who also talks about how we create theories about what we are sensing. I claim that although Quine and Kant are both talking about making sense of our "experiences", they actually have different conceptions of "experience". The primary point of the paper is to elucidate Kant's views on these matters.

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman Jul 1972

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman

Philosophy ETDs

Since Aristotle's time a close connection has been recognized between metaphor and cognition. The connection can be explained if the process of understanding is metaphorical. Such an explanation involves self-reference in two ways. First, the explanation will necessarily apply to itself. Second, metaphor, because it creates significance, must include directions for its own interpretation. Self-reference has been held to result in paradox or nonsense.

Self-referential inconsistency is a problem only if meaning is determinate. Theories of determinate meaning arc based on object-reference, or propositional equivalence. Both bases are shown to be unsatisfactory, and a non-referential theory of meaning based on …

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons Feb 1972

Logic And Coercion In Bentham's Theory Of Law, David B. Lyons

Faculty Scholarship

Unlike conventional moral standards and other social rules, laws can be deliberately laid down and changed by specified procedures. It therefore seems reasonable to think of laws as issuing from or adopted by lawmakers who are ordinary human beings. Since laws tell us what must or must not be done, and since there is some temptation to understand all laws on the same pattern, it is natural to think of them as either commands or prohibitions. This is indeed a traditional view.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

FOR this April issue THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY offers considerable variety-an article dealing with an early attempt to solve the problems of poverty, a report on presentday unrest among Japanese students, a nostalgic re-creation of the all-but-forgotten beauty of the Kansas prairie, an. inquiry into a curious linguistic split that may confront us with undreamt-of-problems, more news from the Women's Lib Front, and last of all an analysis of Robert Southey's style that is as graciously styled as its subject. Scattered among these several articles· are a dozen poems no less worthy of serious and grateful …

Scientific Objectivity And Framework Transpositions, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1970

Scientific Objectivity And Framework Transpositions, Patrick A. Heelan

Research Resources

Truth-invariance relative to synchronous communities of knowers in all countries of the world seems to be one of the striking facts about science that distinguishes it from common sense or even from philosophy. Science is international, cosmopolitan and has, it is claimed, but one language. So pervasive is this belief about the one language of science that it might seem to be almost part of what we mean by the scientific enterprise, and it was indeed a part of the classical philosophy of Newton, Descartes and Kant which supported the scientific enterprise in the first three hundred years of its …

Prolegomenon To A Neo-Kantian Student Heuristic, John W. Nageley Iii Jan 1970

Prolegomenon To A Neo-Kantian Student Heuristic, John W. Nageley Iii

All Master's Theses

The author attempts an in-depth study of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in order to prepare a text for college students in composition courses. It was to be a text designed to help students come to terms with some of the more perplexing problems of man's intellectual life by providing them with the means for understanding the structure of thought. As it stands now, though, this is a prolegomen to that text. It contains the essential theory for the text, but lacks sufficient examples to make it readily accessible to the student, and it lacks the exercises needed to …

Physicalism And Humanism, Robert Sheehan Jan 1969

Physicalism And Humanism, Robert Sheehan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In recent years philosophers have been discussing the pros and cons of the "Identity Hypothesis" of Herbert Feig! (Feig!, 1958). The Identity Hypothesis holds that feelings, expressed or described in phenomenalist language, are identical to brain states as described by rapidly developing neural science. The discussions abound with Ockham's Razor, attacks on and defenses of emergentism, and appeals to Turing Machines as analogues (Hook, 1960).

This paper does not propose to enter that particular dispute, although the author believes the Identity theorists have made the better case thus far. Rather, it is here proposed ,to widen the frame of reference …

Aristotle's Theory Of Principles: A Rationalistic-Empirical Bipolarity, Joseph J. Romano Jan 1968

Aristotle's Theory Of Principles: A Rationalistic-Empirical Bipolarity, Joseph J. Romano

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Primarily, this paper attempts to analyze Aristotle's notion of "principle" as it is uniquely applied throughout his works. "Principle" is a basic notion; and it is, moreover, the basic notion in Aristotle's philosophy. The purpose here is to establish as precisely as possible the meaning of 'principle' and the role that it plays in Aristotelian thought. It is shown that the meaning of "principle" involves a certain bipolar tension which strains between a logico-epistemic pole and an on tic pole. This tension grounds a philosophy which constantly vacillates between a rationalistic idealism and an empirically oriented naturalism.

The Greek term …

Horizon, Objectivity And Reality In The Physical Sciences, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1967

Horizon, Objectivity And Reality In The Physical Sciences, Patrick A. Heelan

Research Resources

An exploration of the utility of a phenomenological style of philosophizing about nature called the analysis of horizons. The name refers to a banner of philosophical reflection practiced by many philosophers mostly of European origin who have been influenced by the Husserlian tradition, like Heidegger, de Waelhens, Gurwitsch, Merleau-Ponty, Luijpen, to mention but a few. To philosophize about science in a phenomenological vein, one must begin with a phenomenological description of the form of life of scientific research, because it is only within a form of life, that is, within a way of experiencing objects, that objects present themselves as …

The Greek Verb 'To Be' And The Problem Of Being, Charles H. Kahn Dec 1965

The Greek Verb 'To Be' And The Problem Of Being, Charles H. Kahn

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

I am concerned in this paper with the philological basis for Greek ontology, that is to say, with the raw material which was provided for philosophical analysis by the ordinary use and meaning of the verb einai, 'to be'. My question is: how were the Greek philosophers guided, or influenced, in their formulation of doctrines of Being, by the pre-philosophical use of this verb which serves to express the concept of Being in Greek?

Complementarity And The Scientific Method: A Criticism, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1965

Complementarity And The Scientific Method: A Criticism, Patrick A. Heelan

Research Resources

In this chapter "Conplementarity and the Scientific Method" of his Quantum Mechanics and Objectivity, Heelan argues that the philosophy of complementarity, although successful in providing physicists with a common language with which to describe quantum phenomena, also contains a theory about scientific method and about human knowing which is open to criticism. Heelan here criticises the following points arising out of the philosophy of complementarity: psycho-physical parallelism; the view that quantum mechanical properties are to be defined classically; and the perturbation theory of measurement. In the course of the criticism, he elaborates the distinction between two types of concepts …

The Discovery Of Quantum Mechanics, Patrick A. Heelan Jan 1965

The Discovery Of Quantum Mechanics, Patrick A. Heelan

Research Resources

In this chapter Heelan discusses how Heisenberg's insight of 1925, that physics should concern itself henceforth only with relations between observables, changed the intentionality-structure of physics. This insight led Heisenberg to the construction of a quantum mechanics of observables. Heelan briefly discusses the significance of his insighand of his rejection of Schrödinger's wave mechanics; the novelty of quantum mechanics as a physical theory, and the meaning he attributed to its most surprising result, viz., the Indeterminacy Relations. The crisis was a crisis of the rationalism inherent in the outlook of classical physics, and Heisenberg's insistence on "observable quantities" was a …
