Mutual Wealth In Rural America, E. G. Nadeau, Elisabeth Howard Jul 2005

Mutual Wealth In Rural America, E. G. Nadeau, Elisabeth Howard

Center for Social Development Research

This essay contends that mutual wealth in rural America, particularly related to the use of land and other natural resources, has undergone three major paradigm shifts in the last 500 years, and may be at the threshold of a fourth. First, from the early 1500s to about 1800, European diseases and conquest destroyed the elaborate management systems for agriculture, forests, game, and other natural resources developed by North American Indians. Second, from the early 1500s to the early 1900s, European and white American settlers, induced by offers of land, repopulated the continent primarily with small and medium-sized farms and ranches. …

Age As Asset: The Contribution Of Youth And Retirees To Rural Well-Being, Kathleen K. Miller, Brian Dabson Jul 2005

Age As Asset: The Contribution Of Youth And Retirees To Rural Well-Being, Kathleen K. Miller, Brian Dabson

Center for Social Development Research

The purpose of this paper is to consider the proposition that community wellbeing in rural America can be enhanced by regarding youth and retirees as assets. For both age groups, the literature and public attitudes tend to adopt a less than positive view, emphasizing the problems associated with the out-migration of young people on the one hand and the growing numbers of the elderly on the other. This paper points to trends and thinking which suggest that a different, asset-based lens may be helpful in developing community and policy responses. This paper is one of a series focusing on wealthbuilding …

Asset-Building In Rural Communities: The Experience Of Individual Asset Accounts, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Jami Curley

Center for Social Development Research

Similar to the beginning of many new eras, the dawning of the 21st century has brought new opportunities as well as new challenges to the stability of our economy. New technology offers more efficient methods of production while the continuing influence of globalization increases market availability for our goods. Yet, when a region has a hard time transitioning to a new economy, the challenges produced by these changes are often overwhelming and can create hardship. Rural America is currently facing many of the difficulties associated with these changing economies, thus affecting their current economic sustainability and development. The industry base …

Asset-Building Programs For People With Disabilities In Rural Areas: Including Independent Living And Long-Term Care Planning Education, Michelle Putnam, Fengyan Tang

Center for Social Development Research

This paper presents findings from a case study of individuals with multiple sclerosis examining their planning and preparation activities for their future independent living and long-term care needs. Data collected from a representative sample of National Multiple Sclerosis Society members in the greater metropolitan St. Louis and eastern Illinois area indicate significant differences in income, assets, education, health and functional limitation status between individuals living in rural versus urban areas. Additionally, findings show respondents with greater levels of education and assets, and those living in urban areas, are more likely to have saved for retirement, made legal preparations, or engaged …

Educational Status And Savings Performance In Individual Development Accounts, Min Zhan, Michal Grinstein-Weiss Jul 2005

Educational Status And Savings Performance In Individual Development Accounts, Min Zhan, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Center for Social Development Research

This study examines the relationship between education and savings performance in Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), a matched savings program for the poor. We also investigate whether the relationship between education and savings is mediated by income, intended uses of IDAs, and program (or institutional) factors. The data of this study is from the American Dream Demonstration (N = 2,50), the first national demonstration of IDAs. The results indicate that, compared to the participants without a high school degree, those with some college education, especially those with a 4-year college degree, had higher savings, after controlling for program factors and other …

Impact Of Asset Ownership On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden Jul 2005

Impact Of Asset Ownership On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Persistent poverty and social exclusion suggest the need for more innovative interventions to reduce severe need and create terms for meaningful participation of vulnerable individuals in economic, political, and social exchange. One such innovation is asset ownership. This study explores the relationship between asset ownership and social inclusion using the human capabilities approach. Findings indicate a significant relationship, suggesting a role for asset-based policy and programs in interventions to foster social inclusion.

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary Jul 2005

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary

Center for Social Development Research

International voluntary service represents the contribution of one’s time to some cause, which is largely uncompensated and spent in a country other than one’s home country. The forms of international service have evolved from roots in missionary service to a focus on development of the host communities and the volunteers. Current trends emphasize mutuality, accountability, and participation by host communities, but against a historical and contemporary backdrop, inequality remains between the volunteers and hosts. This paper speculates a range of possible positive and negative developmental outcomes, programmatic strategies to mediate negative effects, and research to inform program and policy development.

Diffusion Of Policy Innovation: The Case Of Individual Development Accounts (Idas) As An Asset-Building Policy, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner, Karen Edwards

Center for Social Development Research

Diffusion of a policy innovation from one state to another is an important component of social change. Several theories and models have been developed to explain how and under what circumstances policy innovation and diffusion occurs. This paper examines the policy diffusion process through the case of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), a policy innovation designed to provide matched saving opportunities for low-income people to accumulate assets. While our examination supports several of the prominent theories of policy diffusion, we suggest that a fusion of policy theories may better guide policy makers in more adequately predicting and executing the diffusion of …

Shared Experience Building Around The Family Crucible Of Cancer, W. David Robinson, Jason S. Carroll, Wendy L. Watson Jan 2005

Shared Experience Building Around The Family Crucible Of Cancer, W. David Robinson, Jason S. Carroll, Wendy L. Watson

Faculty Publications

This study was designed to gain a greater understanding of the effects cancer has on families while simultaneously developing family therapy interventions that are helpful for families experiencing the crucible of cancer. On the basis of an action research paradigm, the authors designed an intensive case-analysis protocol involving reflective interviewing to learn about the personal perspectives of family members who participate in therapeutic treatment for cancer. An integration of reflective insight by the families, their therapist, and the research team ultimately revealed that cancer families face an ongoing struggle (a) between feelings of isolation and connectedness, (b) to make meaning …

Center for Social Development Research

This research report is the second of a three-part series aimed at developing a greater understanding of older adults and their use of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). The intent of this second report is to answer the following question: What individual and IDA program characteristics are associated with saving outcomes among older adults participating in IDA? These questions are answered using data from the American Dream Demonstration programs (ADD), the first nation-wide evaluation of IDAs as tools for asset building and community development. In this report, comparisons are made between older (50 years or older) and younger (49 years or …

An Agenda On Productive Aging: Research, Policy, And Practice, Nancy Morrow-Howell, Michael Sherraden, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Jim Hinterlong, Philip Rozario, Fengyan Tang

Center for Social Development Research

The Center for Social Development (CSD) at Washington University in St. Louis is advancing an agenda on productive aging, focusing on three primary forms of productive engagement: employment, volunteerism/civic engagement, and caregiving. These are activities that produce goods and services, whether paid for or not, and that have effects beyond individuals to families, communities, and society. Older adults who engage in these activities make important economic and social contributions, though these contributions are often undervalued. This agenda on productive aging builds on the results of a CSD-sponsored symposium where leading gerontologists from many academic disciplines discussed older adults as a …

Center for Social Development Research

This research report is the first of a three-part series aimed at developing a greater understanding of older adults and their use of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). The intent of this first report is to answer the following three questions: 1) Who are the older adults participating in IDAs? 2) What are they saving for? and 3) What do we know about IDAs and saving for retirement? These questions are answered using data from the American Dream Demonstration (ADD), the first nation-wide evaluation of IDAs as tools for asset building and community development. In this report, comparisons are made between …
