This paper aims at exploring certain negotiations that justify Muslim's cinematic texts and practices. It focuses on the questions about what is Islamic and un-Islamic about film, who and what decides certain films as Islamic, and what are the meanings of cinematic practices of Islam for Muslim society. Furthermore, this paper tries to investigate these questions from a theoretical basis using concepts of Islamic modernity, Islamic Ummah and Public, in order to shed some light on the idea of how a production of an Islamic film may trigger the creation of a political and religious identity.

In an age when Jon Stewart tops lists of most-trusted newscasters and Michael Moore becomes a focus of political campaign analysis, the satiric register has attained renewed and urgent prominence in political discourse. Day focuses on three central contemporary forms: the parodic news show, the satiric documentary, and ironic activism. She highlights their shared objective of circumventing the standard conduits of political information and the highly stage-managed nature of current political discourse. In so doing, she argues, they provide fans with a sense of community and purpose notably lacking from organized politics in the twenty-first century.

This essay looks into the novels of two Indonesian women writers, Perempuan Kembang Jepun (Lan Fang 2009) and Dimsum terakhir (Clara Ng 2006), which depict the struggles of the major female characters in negotiating their "hybrid" identities amidst the pulls from various opposing forces that try to impose and define their identities. Both works were published in the post-New Order Indonesia, where identity politics seems to dominate the political and cultural realms. This is a preliminary description of the Malay variety used as a lingua franca in the Malaysian state of Sabah at the northernmost top of Borneo. The paper discusses a number of common linguistic features that distinguish Sabah Malay from other Malay varieties and analyses these features from a historical linguistic perspective. While it is argued that Sabah Malay has a close historical relation with other Malay dialects spoken in Borneo, especially Brunei Malay, the vernacular is also influenced phonologically and lexically by Sabah's indigenous and immigrant speech communities. Documentary Editing has served the association well since 1979 as a print journal, but it has run into the familiar problems of a print journal with a limited circulation and ever-increasing costs for paper, printing, and mailing. There have also been problems in having a lack of continuity in the position of editor. The association owes many thanks to the publications committee, and in particular to Ron Bosco and Rich Leffler for their recent work as co-editors. The urban space offers more challenges to the female self. Two motion pictures, Lost in translation (2003) and The good girl (2002), depict the issue of gender and space by conveying the city as prison for the female characters. This article analyses the urban space and argues that in the two movies, the female characters struggle and eventually create meaning in the urban room. Applying feminism and urban geography in analysing the position of female characters within the city, the paper finds that the two films offer their perception on, and solutions to, the imprisonment of women by the urban …

In our current professional environment, there is a lot of energy and attention paid to the digital humanities and the dreamy new world it is ushering in, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to finance and publish large, sophisticated scholarly editions in print. Funding agencies are now demanding that editions be published in digital format, and the success of certain editorial projects in drawing in funds and attention--Ken Price's Walt Whitman Archive, for example--suggests that future developments in the field will likely require sophisticated engagement with computers.

The VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) period of the seventeenth/eighteenth century, also known as the early modern period, is regarded as a starting point in this study. It was during this time that printing machines were imported from Europe by the VOC authorities. The availability of paper and printing ink also made it possible for the production of printed matter such as forms, books, and other material. Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

The main aim of the paper is the comparison of two archaeological sites, (1) the Eufaula site of McIntosh County, and (2) the Spiro site of Leflore County, Okla. Purpose of the comparison is to indicate the relationship between the 2 sites, thereby establishing a Spiro Focus, the ramifications and general affiliations of which will be suggested.
