A Secondary Analysis Of Twelfth Grade Students And Their Engagement In Risk Behaviors, Dana L. Morton

Masters Theses

This study was a secondary analysis of data from a national survey of 135 high schools throughout the nation, including both rural and urban settings. A sample of 14,056 twelfth grade students participated in the survey. This study explored the relationships between religious attendance, perceived importance of religion, and smoking and consumption of alcohol in adolescents. Very little research was found on the relationship between religion and adolescent health, indicating a need for more investigations. This study found that the greater number of times an individual attended religious services the less they reported engaging in smoking and drinking. Future intention …

Cancer-Induced Fatigue And Skeletal Muscle Wasting: The Role Of Exercise, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Fatigue is the most frequently reported symptom by cancer patients. Many of these patients perceive fatigue as the most distressing symptom associated with their illness because it imposes limitations on their physical activity level. Skeletal muscle wasting, which occurs as part of cancer cachexia, is one of the mechanisms that contribute to fatigue. Cancer induced skeletal muscle wasting may occur despite normal food intake and is not prevented by nutritional supplementation. Evidence suggests that endurance exercise ameliorates cancer-related fatigue. There is no compelling evidence to support that exercise induced reduction in fatigue is related to preservation of muscle mass. Resistance …

Resistance Exercise Training Attenuates Wasting Of The Edl Muscle In Mice Bearing The Colon-26 Adenocarcinoma, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Progressive wasting of skeletal muscle is a significant side effect of malignancy. Perturbations in protein metabolism contribute to this state of wasting. Resistance exercise increases protein synthesis and mass of healthy muscles and counteracts muscle wasting associated with several catabolic conditions. It is not known whether resistance exercise training can counteract cancer-induced muscle wasting. This study examined the effect of resistance exercise training on muscle mass and protein content in 9 mice bearing the colon-26 adenocarcinoma. The dorsiflexor (extensor digitorum longus [EDL] and tibialis anterior) and plantar flexor (soleus, plantaris, and gastrocnemius) muscles of 1 leg of the tumor-bearing and …

Factors Influencing Smoking In Adolescents, Jeff J. Mitchell Aug 2000

Factors Influencing Smoking In Adolescents, Jeff J. Mitchell

MSN Research Projects

Adolescents' use of tobacco products is an ever-growing sector of today's society. Adolescents continue to smoke cigarettes at an alarming rate. Early adolescent cigarette smoking between the ages of 11 and 13 years was found to be related to peer pressure and family role-modeling. Another influence cited was the use of media catering to adolescents. The ease at which adolescents acquire cigarettes is evidence that further restrictions need to be applied to those who sell to adolescents. The purpose of this study was to further explore influencing factors to adolescent smoking. The research question was what are the factors that …

Factors Which Influence College-Aged Men To Perform Testicular Self-Examinât I On, Keith Odendahl Aug 2000

Factors Which Influence College-Aged Men To Perform Testicular Self-Examinât I On, Keith Odendahl

MSN Research Projects

Testicular cancer (TC) has been determined to be the most common malignancy in men 15 to 34 years of age. An estimated 7,400 new cases of TC will be diagnosed in 1999, and approximately 3 00 men will die this year from TC. Evidence suggests the incidence of TC is on the rise in North America, especially among Caucasian men. However, TC is nearly 100% curable if detected in its early stages. Testicular self-examination (TSE), a strategy employed by men to detect TC in its early stages, has not been endorsed by leading authorities on cancer. Education on the disease …
