Staff Education Program To Reduce Burnout Among Health Care Professionals On A Long-Term Care Unit, Emelda Mati Che

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBurnout negatively impacts the performance of health care providers, decreasing the quality of care provided to patients and affecting patients’ experience. This problem is evident in health care staff on long-term care units (LTCUs) as they strive to meet their patients’ chronic and acute care needs. Health care professionals often lack adequate knowledge on how to manage work-related stress and reduce the issue of burnout in this work environment. The health care professionals working on the LTCU at the local continuing care retirement facility were identified as lacking knowledge to manage work-related stress and burnout. Addressing this problem is essential …

Extended mechanical ventilation times after open heart surgery can contribute to complications prolonging recovery and length of stay, as well as increasing mortality. Standardized staff education of immediate post-open-heart recovery and ventilator weaning protocols, combined with the use of ABCDE and VAP bundles can reduce these complications. At Hospital X during summer of 2022, the average length of time patients remained mechanically ventilated after open heart surgery increased. After an initial needs survey was distributed to nursing staff, a set of novel QR codes was created to simplify and centralize training for staff in the ICU to facilitate early extubation …

Heparin Vs. Saline: Evaluating Evidence-Based Best Practice For Maintaining Patency Of Implanted Ports, Shannon D. Murdock Jan 2023

Heparin Vs. Saline: Evaluating Evidence-Based Best Practice For Maintaining Patency Of Implanted Ports, Shannon D. Murdock

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background Implanted ports are frequently used for central venous access in the adult oncology population. Maintaining patency of these ports is important for continuing uninterrupted treatment and supportive care for oncologic patients. Historically, heparin solution has been used as a locking solution for implanted ports to prevent occlusion. However, evidence shows that 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline or NS) as a lock solution is equally effective as heparin solution at maintaining implanted port patency and poses less risk to patients.

Local Problem In an ambulatory adult oncology clinic serving Seacoast New Hampshire, a gap was identified between clinical practice where …

Establishing A Protocol To Address Workplace Violence And Increase The Perceptions Of Safety Among Emergency Department Nurses: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Devan M. Robidoux

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: Violence against emergency department nurses has become a widespread phenomenon that can greatly impact a nurse's job satisfaction and performance. Research has been scarce in examining the relationship between workplace violence and its underlying consequences. There remains a disconnect between precursors of violence against nurses perpetrated by patients and the cultural expectation that violence is a part of the nurses job and, subsequently, what they signed up for when going into the field. Nurses learn that having a greater understanding of the value in the lived experience of their patients leads to better quality delivery of care. However, culturally …

Evaluating A Rapid Response Team Performance To Implement Best Practice In Rapid Response Team Protocol, Pansy Samuel

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background

Rapid Response Teams (RRT) provide clinical resources to improve patient safety outcomes at healthcare institutions. This team promptly responds to deteriorating patient conditions to prevent further deterioration and reduce mortality rates. Rapid response teams do not always perform optimally. Reasons for this performance failure include breakdowns in communication, team dynamics, or other variables that can often be adjusted when the team members understand the role these variables play in undermining the performance of the RRT. An understanding of the perceptions of the RRT members regarding their roles and potential areas of improvement did provide valuable data that was utilized …

Medical emergencies occur every day in school settings across America. School nurses have a vital role in providing care for individuals experiencing a medical emergency and leading a multidisciplinary team during a medical emergency event. Since incidences of medical emergencies are commonplace, it is standard to have protocols and guidelines for these events. To address this concern, an evidence-based practice project was implemented in a rural school district in North Georgia. The pilot project was developed and implemented to assess the effectiveness of implementing a “Medical Emergency Chain of Command Protocol.” The protocol was developed to improve the effectiveness and …

Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, Malinda B. Whitfield Dec 2022

Improving Access For Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Patients: A Health Policy Analysis, Malinda B. Whitfield

Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current

The Medicare Inpatient Psychiatric Services (IPS) policy, originally developed in the 1960s and without any significant or meaningful updates since the 1980’s, is physician specific, does not reflect the current model of care for psychiatric inpatients, and is restrictive for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) practice. The policy is complex, consists of outdated regulations, and results in millions of dollars in compliance costs for Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities (IPFs) annually (NABH, 2019). Although clearly an important part of the inpatient psychiatric services team, PMHNPs are not identified or defined in the policy (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2019). …
