United States Born Mexican Origin Women's Descriptions About Their Eating Patterns, Juanita Teresa Garcia

Dissertations (1934 -)

Problem. Mexican origin (MO) women comprise the largest Hispanic subgroup (nearly two-thirds) of Latinas in the US. This subgroup has high incidences of obesity and associated chronic diseases. Modifiable risk factors for obesity and chronic diseases include unhealthy diets and eating patterns. Efforts to understand eating patterns of Hispanics have focused on primarily first-generation Hispanics. To date, limited research has been conducted to explore underlying factors that contribute to eating patterns of US born MO women living in the US. Method. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory-descriptive study, using a thematic analysis approach, was employed to explore 15 US born …

The Impact Of In-Home Lactation Support On Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, Duration, And Exclusivity, Kristian Beach

DNP Projects

While there is evidence to suggest that hospital lactation support impacts rates of breastfeeding initiation by new mothers, women may benefit from additional lactation support and intervention to meet Healthy People 2020 goals for breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. Breastfeeding self-efficacy can be targeted by lactation counselors to improve breastfeeding outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine how in-home lactation support influences breastfeeding self-efficacy, duration, and exclusivity. A descriptive, cross-sectional, survey-based design with convenience sampling was used in the study, in which a one-time, voluntary, electronic survey with a retrospective pretest-posttest was emailed to postpartum women who received in-home …

African-American breast cancer survivors commonly demonstrate low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Decreased cutaneous conversion, high levels of adiposity, and even breast cancer treatment may influence vitamin D status. Previous investigations have analyzed African-American women in aggregate with other breast cancer survivors and have not comprehensively addressed these influential factors.

The Relationship Of Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy To Breastfeeding Duration And Breastfeeding Exclusivity Of Full-Term Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Mixed Method Study, Karen Hylton-Mcguire Apr 2018

The Relationship Of Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy To Breastfeeding Duration And Breastfeeding Exclusivity Of Full-Term Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Mixed Method Study, Karen Hylton-Mcguire

Theses & Dissertations

Background

Research demonstrates better health outcomes for both women and their infants when infants are breast-fed. There is evidence that an increasing number of full-term, normal birth weight infants are being admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and that these infants receive less breast milk than their well full-term and preterm infant counter parts. The effect of short-term admission of full-term infants to the NICU on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding exclusivity and duration, and the facilitators of and barriers to breastfeeding success reported by these mothers, has not been well explored.

Purpose

The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke Apr 2018

The Impact Of Advance Directives On The Intensity Of Care Received In The Acute Care Setting In Older Adults, Marsha Helen Tyacke

Dissertations (1934 -)

The proportion of older adults in the U.S. is rapidly increasing. One-third of Medicare expenditures occur in the final year of life, with nearly half resulting from acute exacerbations of chronic, progressive diseases(Riley & Lubitz, 2010). Older adults prefer comfort over life-sustaining care, and decreased intensity of care is associated with improved quality of life at the end-of-life (EOL). Advance directives (ADs) have been proposed as mechanisms to improve congruence between patient wishes and EOL care; however, the impact of ADs on care delivered in the acute care setting at the EOL for this population is unclear. A retrospective, correlation …

Should Ferritin Tests Be Added To Routine Screening: An Integrative Literature Review, Adebowale Adesuyi Mar 2018

Should Ferritin Tests Be Added To Routine Screening: An Integrative Literature Review, Adebowale Adesuyi

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis was to explore the possible benefits of a blood screening to be coupled with the annual routine check-up. Blood screenings are only administered upon reasonable suspicion of pathology. Upon the examination of current research concerning ferritin levels within the blood, one can speculate the existence of strong correlations between ferritin levels, inflammatory disease and early morality. Cause for concern stems from the fact that the ferritin levels of the vast majority of people in the US are completely unknown.

Ferritin levels are the most accurate marker for measuring the amount of iron being stored …

Improving Neonatal Outcomes Through The Implementation Of A Delayed Bathing Program, Kathy Livolsi Mar 2018

Improving Neonatal Outcomes Through The Implementation Of A Delayed Bathing Program, Kathy Livolsi

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Abstract

Background and Objective: Until 2010 newborns at most community-based hospitals were subjected to their initial bath within two hours of birth. However, this practice has recently changed due to the evidence-based recommendations that demonstrate improved outcomes for neonates when the first bath is delayed for 12-24 hours after birth. Upon delivery, infants are placed skin-to-skin with their parents to promote thermoregulation, breast feeding and bonding. The purpose of this project was to implement a program that delayed infant bathing until the infant was approximately 24 hours old. Rates of neonatal hypoglycemia, neonatal hypothermia, exclusive in-hospital breastfeeding and formula supplementation …

Studies Of Amino Acid Mutations In Drug Resistance Of The Smo Protein, Eunice Wintona Mar 2018

Studies Of Amino Acid Mutations In Drug Resistance Of The Smo Protein, Eunice Wintona

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Smoothened receptor (SMO) is a protein that in humans, is encoded by the SMO gene. A systemic mutation in its binding pocket helps predict the sensitivity of mutant proteins to different drugs. Known as a GPCR-like receptor, it is a component of the hedgehog signaling pathway; a pathway involved in body patterning and the regulation of adult stem cells. An uncontrolled or inappropriate activation of the Hedgehog pathway drives tumor progression in cancers and a number of birth defects. To achieve these goals, the molecular modeling software MOE was used to build small molecules and drug molecules like Vismodegib and …

Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Exercise Interventions On Obese Adolescents, Brandy E. Strahan Phd, Rn, Hyochol Ahn Phd, Ms-Ece, Ms-Cts, Aprn, Anp-Bc, Jonathan Shuster M.Sc., Ph.D.

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

A meta-analysis of 10 randomized control studies published in 2003-2013 was conducted to provide a summary of the effects of exercise interventions on obese adolescents. Outcomes of the reviewed trials included body mass index, weight, glucose, and triglycerides. Data were combined using an inverse variance weighted random effects model. The effect size estimate for BMI was 1.354 kg/m2 (p < 0.001, SE 0.321), indicating that the BMI of individuals in treatment groups improved, as compared to control groups. A statistically significant reduction in weight was greater in the intervention groups than the control groups by 3.815 kg (p = 0.001, SE 1.101). The findings of this meta-analysis show that exercise interventions may improve control of weight and BMI and in turn be a factor in decreasing obesity.
