Wound Healing, Emily Schmitter
Wound Healing, Emily Schmitter
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
The topic being presented is wound healing. Wound healing is a pathological process that occurs in three phases: inflammation, proliferation and new tissue formation, and remodeling and maturation. Several factors can affect wound healing such as nutrition status, increased age and health status. Wound healing is relevant to advanced practiced nursing because APNs participate in prevention, assessment, and treatment of wounds. The APN is responsible for teaching diabetic patients about the importance of proper nutrition. The APN must also be able to identify a hard-to-heal wound. And the APN must know how to prevent infection and induce healing in hard-to-heal …
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Gifty Menka
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Gifty Menka
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), is diagnosed as persistently elevated pressures in the pulmonary arteries. It is a severe disease that requires early diagnosis and treatment as it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly and adequately. The initial presenting signs and symptoms such as lethargy, malaise, and exercise intolerance can be vague, making it difficult to diagnose. Also, doctors at centers that specialize in treating PAH are the only ones who can properly diagnose the condition and initiate disease-targeted therapy. There are different types of PAH; the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes 5 groups of pulmonary hypertension (PH), and they …

Pasteurization Of Human Donor Milk, Laura Brewer
Pasteurization Of Human Donor Milk, Laura Brewer
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Appropriate and adequate nutrition is critical to reduce the risk of mortality in the preterm infant (Parker, 2019). Mother’s own milk (MOM) is the best source of nutrition and reduces the risk of common neonatal complications, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), infections resulting in late-onset sepsis, and retinopathy of prematurity (Li et al., 2017). When MOM is unavailable to the neonate, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that human donor milk is the next best option (Peila et al., 2016). Donor milk can be obtained from a human milk bank and is considered safe for …

Improving Skin Tears Healing Time Is Demonstrated By The Staff Rn Who Performs Early Initiation Treatment Of The Skin Tear Protocol, Sharon Brazile
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Skin tears create numerous challenges for managing skin integrity for our aging population. Skin tears result from trauma, such as a patient bumping into a doorknob or rubbing against the wheelchair; they also occur because the epidermis and dermis lose elasticity and rub against each other, causing a shearing process that separates the outer skin layers from their protective under layers. Skin tears not only look terrible but can be painful and lead to infection if treatment is not initiated early by the nurse.
Purpose: The Chief Nursing Officer chose to focus on skin tear treatment at a southeast urban …

A Case For Delirium Risk Prediction Models To Aid In Triaging Resources To Those Most At Risk An Integrative Literature Review, Tammy Perttula
Nursing Masters Papers
Abstract
Delirium is a complex syndrome resulting from compounding effects of acute illness, comorbidities, and the environment. It results in adverse outcomes: elevated mortality rates, length of stay, readmissions, institutionalization, long-term cognitive changes, and diminished quality of life. The rate of iatrogenic delirium is astounding, ranging from 10%-89%. There are no curative treatments; thus, primary prevention is the key. The purpose of this literature review is to identify and critique the research for the accuracy of risk stratification and feasibility in practice. Support for interventions that prevent delirium is mounting; however, interventions are resource-intensive and often not implemented. Researchers have …

Using Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral To Treatment To Address Problematic Alcohol Use At A University Student Health Center, Tajuane H. Dockery
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Problematic drinking is a public health concern on college campuses. College students who do not have their risky drinking behaviors addressed are at greater risk for developing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Despite known risks associated with drinking on college campuses, many college health centers miss an opportunity to address these behaviors because they lack a systematic process for identifying students at risk and referring them for treatment. This evidence-based project evaluated the effectiveness of using Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to identify students with risky drinking behaviors and the impact the screening process had on facilitating a referral …
Improving Central Venous Catheter Infection Rates Through The Use Of A Bundle: An Integrative Review, Janice Laverne Harris-Hall
Improving Central Venous Catheter Infection Rates Through The Use Of A Bundle: An Integrative Review, Janice Laverne Harris-Hall
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The role of Central Venous Catheters (CVC) is significant for the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) population. The placement of the CVC for a HD (HD) patient is not only necessary, but life-sustaining. CVCs are usually placed for an emergent HD treatment, while awaiting a permanently placed arteriovenous fistula or graft (AVF/AVG), or when the permanent access becomes non-functioning. There are multiple risk factors related to having a CVC placed, the most predominant complication being catheter line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Studies have shown that implementing a CVC prevention bundle was associated with a significant reduction in the CLABSI rates within the …
