The Effects Of Psychotropic Medication Therapy On The Behaviors Of The Institutionalized Alzheimer's Disease Patient, Mary Beth Mckinneu
The Effects Of Psychotropic Medication Therapy On The Behaviors Of The Institutionalized Alzheimer's Disease Patient, Mary Beth Mckinneu
MSN Research Projects
Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness that is common among the nursing home population. Treatment for Alzheimer's disease is usually palliative and consists of using psychotropic medications to control aggressive and agitated behaviors exhibited by its victims. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify behaviors exhibited by Alzheimer's disease patients before and after receiving psychotropic medications. Johnson's Behavioral System Model was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The sample (N = 33) consisted of nursing home residents with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease who were treated with one psychotropic medication. The researcher used chart review to …

Characteristics Of Nursing Doctoral Programs In The United States, Melanie Mcewen, Gregory A. Bechtel
Characteristics Of Nursing Doctoral Programs In The United States, Melanie Mcewen, Gregory A. Bechtel
Nursing Faculty Publications
The expansive growth of doctoral programs in the United States has necessitated a need to determine demographic attributes of the academic program, characteristics of the students, admission criteria, and curriculum patterns. Seventy-eight doctoral programs were sent a researcher-designed survey and 48 (62 per cent) responded. Results show an increasing shift away from clinical doctorates to the research doctorate, although few differences exist within the research focus of doctoral nursing programs. Consistent with previous reports in the literature, curricula are fairly standard and few differences were noted based on a number of criteria including geographic location, type of degree granted, Carnegie …
The Relationship Between Companion Animals And Health Status Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Agnes M. Eytchison
The Relationship Between Companion Animals And Health Status Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Agnes M. Eytchison
Master's Projects
A study was conducted on 18 older adult pet owners and non-pet owners residing in a mobile home park to determine self-perception of health status and the level of attachment to pets. Self-reported health status was high and equal for both pet owners and non-pet owners. The level of attachment to the pets was also high. Studies have demonstrated human-animal interactions being beneficial to both individuals and families; but for many residents of mobile home parks and common interest developments, such as condominiums and townhouses, rules prevent companion animal ownership. Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) aware of the benefits of animal …
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Urinary Continence Program With Urinary Incontinent Rehabilitation Patients, Pat Emmons

Roy's adaptation theory was used as the conceptual framework for this research project. The tools used for data collection were: the Functional Independence Measure {FIM), daily 24 hour incontinence logs, pre/post true and false knowledge tests and pre/post staff attitude questionnaires. Eleven of the 12 patients admitted to the program had improved FIM scores and …
A Comparison Of Perceived Nurse Practitioner Practice Barriers, Katherine Kinner
A Comparison Of Perceived Nurse Practitioner Practice Barriers, Katherine Kinner
Master's Projects
Novice nurse practitioners (NP) face unique obstacles to practice. Few studies examine factors influencing early NP clinical performance. Therefore, this research project analyzed data obtained from 243 members of an NP professional organization, who were asked to identify barriers encountered within the first 3 years of practice. Responses were received from beginning and more experienced NPs. The top 3 barriers named were lack of public knowledge, lack of positions for NPs, and a lower salary than anticipated. The promotion of NP assets through expanded media coverage and individual educational efforts, the national standardization of the role, and the elimination of …

Perceived Social Support Of Family Members Of Aged Care Facility Residents And Its Relationship With Family Members Well-Being And Their Support Of Relatives In Residential Care, Christine Toye
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
When elderly people are cared for In Aged Care Facilities (ACFs) it is known that their family members frequently suffer negative effects. These effects may be alleviated by social support and, because they feel better, family members may then offer more support to residents. In this study, the researcher tested a model with a sample of 213 family members of ACF residents. Predictive relationships were hypothesised among incentives for family members to support residents, stress related factors, the perceived formal and Informal support of family members, their psychological wellbeing, and the support they offered to residents. The researcher also developed …
A Study Of Nursing Students And Intrinsic Spirituality, Christine Anderson Madsen
A Study Of Nursing Students And Intrinsic Spirituality, Christine Anderson Madsen
Master's Projects
This paper describes some theoretical perspectives of spirituality, the concepts of spiritual care and spiritual needs, and barriers to providing spiritual care as described in the literature. The two most frequently described barriers are lack of comfort with the topic and lack of education. Because there is so little written about the discussion of spirituality in schools of nursing, a descriptive study using nursing students on the central coast of California was conducted. The Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale (SIBS) was used to measure intrinsic spirituality. This study looked for relationships between the scores on this scale, and the students' …

Nurse Pracitioners' Assessment Of Sexuality Among Elders, Michelle Banks
Nurse Pracitioners' Assessment Of Sexuality Among Elders, Michelle Banks
MSN Research Projects
As older adults age, they are presented with a perplexity of lifestyle adaptations. Primary care providers often view physiologic losses elders have as inevitable. Sexuality accounts for one example of these losses that elders feel are important, but have difficulty discussing with health care providers. Thus, the purpose of this descriptive/exploratory research study was to explore the nurse practitioner's assessment of sexuality among elders. The theoretical framework used in this study is Shippee-Rice’s Conceptual Model of Sexuality. The model focuses on four elements: the self, the components of sexuality, significant others, and environmental variables. The research questions were: 1) How …

Comparison Of Nurse Practitioner Exercise Prescription: Mississippi Versus Retrospective International Internet Data, Lesa J. Mathis
MSN Research Projects
Regular exercise is one of the best types of health promotion and prevention. Researchers have established that exercise decreases the risk for heart disease, hypertension, strokes, cancer, and osteoporosis. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the exercise prescriptive practices and perspectives of adult, family, and gerontological nurse practitioners in Mississippi compared to an international Internet study. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory was the theoretical framework for this study. Surveys were sent to adult, family, and gerontological nurse practitioners in the State of Mississippi with a return envelope for response. The final convenience sample consisted of 116 surveys. The …

Factors That Influence Family Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction, Jeffrey M. Bishop
Factors That Influence Family Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction, Jeffrey M. Bishop
MSN Research Projects
Job satisfaction influences employee retention, employee self-actualization, worker productivity, and performance quality. This study investigated the factors that influence family nurse practitioners' (FNPs) job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction. Additionally, the study was an attempt to ascertain the intrinsic and extrinsic factors as well as the general level of job satisfaction. A descriptive survey design with a triangulated approach utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods was used. Job satisfaction was conceptualized based on Frank Herzberg's dual-factor theory of satisfaction and motivation. A random sample of 100 FNPs was surveyed with the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form and a researcher-designed Demographic Data Questionnaire that …

Lunar Phases, Time Variations, And Birthrate In Western Michigan, Janet Mitchell
Lunar Phases, Time Variations, And Birthrate In Western Michigan, Janet Mitchell
Masters Theses
Staffing standards in the labor and delivery units of hospitals are based on estimates of the number of patients who will be admitted. Anecdotally, patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals frequently comment that the occurrence of the fell moon brings about an increase in the number of laboring women. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between birthrate and time of day, day of the week, month of the year and new and full moons. Martha Rogers' theory, the Science of Unitary Human Beings, was used as the theoretical framework.
A descriptive ex post facto design using retrospective …
Physician Perceptions Of Behaviors Associated With The Nurse Practitioner Role, Elizabeth J. Sperry
Physician Perceptions Of Behaviors Associated With The Nurse Practitioner Role, Elizabeth J. Sperry
Masters Theses
While the number of nurse practitioners (NPs) continues to grow, their role and scope of practice can be misunderstood. King’s interacting systems framework was the theoretical basis for this study. This descriptive study asked a convenience sample of physicians (n=128) to indicate their agreement with 37 behaviors for the NP role. The sample was 74.2% male, 49.2% ages 41-50, and 63 .2% practiced primarily in an office setting. Bambini’s (I995) modification of Hupcey’s (1994) instrument was used and internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s alpha .97. Behaviors perceived as most appropriate for NPs were those that related to education. A …
Patient Perception Of The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In Primary Care, Betsy J. Mulder
Patient Perception Of The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In Primary Care, Betsy J. Mulder
Masters Theses
As nurse practitioners (NP) provide services to a variety of health care consumers, there remains ambiguity regarding their scope of practice. This descriptive, comparative study asked a convenience sample of patients who have had contact with nurse practitioners (n = 56), and those patients who have had no contact with nurse practitioners (n = 51), to indicate their agreement with the appropriateness of behaviors for the NP role. A questionnaire used by Bambini (1995) was modified for this study with an alpha reliability of .95. Perceptions of behaviors were ranked according to the level of perceived appropriateness. None of the …
The Effect Of An Initial Clinical Nursing Experience In A Nursing Home On Associate Degree Nursing Student Attitudes Toward The Elderly, Rita Lareau
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the change in associate degree nursing (ADN) students’ attitudes toward the elderly following an initial clinical nursing experience in a nursing home. The Neuman Systems Model (Neuman, 1995) was the conceptual focus for the research. A convenience sample of ADN students in a basic nursing care clinical course at a community college was used. The Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale (Kogan, 1961) was utilized to assess student attitudes toward the elderly. A pretest was administered at the beginning of the course prior to the nursing home experience, and a post-test was …
