Methodological Quality Of Quantitative Nursing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Research From 2000 To 2010, Michael Johnson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people constitute one of the largest underserved populations in any nursing setting. Despite the large LGBT populations, very little nursing research has been conducted on these populations. Nurse researchers have recommended that nursing researchers end the silence on LGBT research. To accomplish this, the methodological rigor of LGBT nursing research must be evaluated and improved upon. Currently, no literature examines the methodological quality of quantitative nursing LGBT research. Using a cross-sectional design, it was the purpose of this study to evaluate the methodological quality of quantitative nursing LGBT research from 2000 to 2010 using …

There is a growing evidence in the nursing literature about the effectiveness of clinical simulation as a powerful teaching/learning strategy. This wealth of research attributes simulation's effectiveness to its design that creates an environment where "students become active learners, abandoning memorization for accessing knowledge, and thinking and applying learning in context rather than providing answers to fact-based test" (Jeffries, 2007). A simulation suite provides a "safe, supportive environment that allows students to learn a variety of complex skills in a stress-free environment" (Ghiglieri, Ruiz, & Vasudevan, 2007). Creating this environment requires meticulous planning to details. The learner must have a …

A Primer For Consumer Involvement In Medicaid Nursing Facility Reimbursement: Lessons From New York And Minnesota, Edward Alan Miller, Cynthia Rudder Nov 2011

A Primer For Consumer Involvement In Medicaid Nursing Facility Reimbursement: Lessons From New York And Minnesota, Edward Alan Miller, Cynthia Rudder

Gerontology Institute Publications

Medicaid is the major purchaser of nursing home care in the United States. To ensure that providers behave appropriately, the federal and state governments have established an extensive set of regulations that nursing homes must comply with if they are to be reimbursed for patients insured by Medicaid. Consumers exert considerable influence here by focusing on regulations and enforcement of non-compliance.

States also seek to align providers’ interests with those of other interested parties through controls and incentives built into state reimbursement systems, including with respect to facility cost and quality, access to care, payment equity, service capacity, and budgetary …

Challenge With Care: Reflections On Teaching Excellence, Stacee M. Lerret, Marilyn Frenn

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

A number of faculty have had no formal preparation to teach. Because little nursing research has focused on teaching excellence in recent years, when both nursing practice and approaches to teaching and learning have changed remarkably, this analysis integrates present perspectives and the research foundation for teaching nursing. A constant comparative method incorporating 27 doctoral student reflections and analysis of literature from 1960 to present resulted in four major categories: know and honor students, enthused, knowledgeable, and student centered. Linking the major categories, an Excellent Teacher Circle of Distinction emerged, described as “with enthusiasm and compassion the teacher engages the …

Student-Generated Behavioral Guidelines To Inform Ethical Practice: A Quality Improvement Project, Nancy C. Wilk, Nancy Meierdierks Bowllan

Nursing Faculty/Staff Publications

Nursing faculty members have become increasingly concerned with student incidences of cheating and the associated lack of commitment to ethical conduct. Our faculty believed that actively engaging students in the development of specific behavioral guidelines would result in improved ethical conduct and provide a bridge to future professional ethical practice. The authors discuss the use of focus groups to establish clear behavioral guidelines that align with the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.

Poor Women With Sexually Transmitted Infections: Providers’ Perspectives On Diagnoses, Genevieve R. Cox

Sociology

This article presents results from a study of health care providers, mainly nurses and nurse practitioners, who routinely diagnose sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in rural low-income populations in West Virginia (WV). A qualitative analysis of eighteen semi-structured interviews reveals that providers who consistently work with low-income populations believe patients undergo a negative change in self-image in response to a chronic STD diagnosis. Providers express concerns about a number of issues related to low-income, rural women’s access to sexual health care and see the need for more sexuality education, more funding for free and reduced cost clinics, and more available health …

When Mountain Bellies Grow Round: Localized Knowledge And Behaviors Facilitating Pregnancy And Childbirth In Phaphlu, Nepal, Cailin Marsden

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In attempts to gain a level of understanding of a community’s localized experiences, beliefs, practices, and roles around pregnancy and childbirth, ethnographic fieldwork was conducted with the mothers and fathers of Phaphlu in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Aimed at the validation of diverse and localized ways of knowing revealed during the fieldwork period, this paper applies anthropologist Bridgette Jordan’s theoretical framework of authoritative knowledge to the emergent themes of subjectively understood childbirth (knowledge acquisition and flow, role of the husband, and protective behavior.)

EMPIRICAL DATA MINING: CONSERVATION OF NURSING ENERGY AND CARE CAPACITY IN MEDICAL-SURGICAL HOSPITAL WORK ENVIRONMENTS

Nurses are a critical component of the hospital care delivery system and provide essential observation and surveillance of inpatients. Mounting evidence describes an association between nurse staffing, the nurse work environment, and patient and nurse outcomes. In particular, more registered nurse hours per patient day have been linked to reduced patient mortality. However, recent studies indicate that only a minority of nursing time is dedicated to patient observation and assessment of vital signs. Therefore, increasing the proportion of nursing …

HIM 1990-2015

United States breastfeeding rates are below Healthy People 2020 national goals, with African American women at the lowest rates. According to the theory of planned behavior, intention is a strong determinant of actual behavior. The purpose of this review is to uncover how researchers can best measure attributes that influence the intention to breast feed in the African American college aged population of nulliparous women. Tools to measure breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, cultural and social norms will be identified. Searches of health databases and Google Scholar located peer-reviewed journals using keywords such as Black, African American, instrument, female and student. …
