A Bjorling-Happening In Kansas City, December 20, 2005, Dan Shea, Terry Williams
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
As Dan and Gail Shea prepared for their pre-holiday drive from Wisconsin to California, it occurred to Dan that Kansas City is something of a hotbed of true Jussicologists- maybe we could all get together? So Dan called Pat Darrow and emailed Terry Williams and Ed Walter, and then Terry called Don Quinn and local opera broadcaster Jim Seaver and singers Gustavo and Sarah Halley. Everyone wanted to meet, including some spouses, so a room for 12 was arranged at a local restaurant and a talk-fest broke out. So many fine folks with amusing stories about Jussi and other operatic …

Jussi Bjorling In London, Harold Rosenthal
Jussi Bjorling In London, Harold Rosenthal
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
We first heard Jussi Bjorling in the autumn of 1937, but we had certainly heard of him before that. His first gramophone recordings, arias from Tosca, La fanciulla del West, La boheme, Aida and Rigoletto, had already been issued, and the advance publicity had spoken of "a new Caruso", a claim which led the great English critic, Ernest Newman, to comment: "Here lies as usual a press-agent". (This is said to be the wording of a famous inscription on a gravestone somewhere in the U.S.A.)

The Singer And The Actor, Edvin Adolphson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
It would not be overstating the case to say that Jussi Bjorling was extremely popular with artists of the spoken theatre too. He was always very eager to team all about the problems of the theatre and of he actor's art, and when he met actors he never failed to ask us about our experiences in the theatre. He wanted to know as much as possible about the stage and its techniques.
Jussi Bjorling And The Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, H. A. Bronsted
Jussi Bjorling And The Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, H. A. Bronsted
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
There were all too few occasions on which we at the Royal Theatre enjoyed the good fortune of being able to persuade Jussi Bjorling to sing on our stage. In return, though, these guest appearances become memorable events in our theatre's little history. During the Royal Swedish Opera's guest performances in Copenhagen in 1933 he sang the roles of Vladimir in Prince. Igor and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. ln 1942 he brightened the dark period of occupation as the Duke in Rigoletto and Rodolfo in La boheme, And he was with us in our joy at the liberation when, …

A Sovereign Artistry, Holger Lowenadler
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Jussi Bjorling! I remembered all the times I heard the young tenor in the 1930s: he was the impecunious, enamoured Rodolfo in La boheme; the cynical Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto; Cavaradossi, the fighter for liberty in Tosca; Manon Lescaut's noble des Grieux; the lyrical Romeo or Faust; the despairing Canio. The voice was always the same- warm, healthy, beautiful.

On Wings Of Song, Bertil Bokstedt
On Wings Of Song, Bertil Bokstedt
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
To have had the pleasure of being Jussi's regular accompanist over many years is what one can truly call a journey on wings of song. The first such occasion was at Grona Lund in summer 1951, a concert which was preceded by rehearsals on Siaro in a specially equipped studio which looks out on blue firths and an idyllic little fishing cottage. Notwithstanding all wonderful concerts at which I accompanied him, it was there in that studio that I experienced Jussi's most beautiful tones; there he was himself; there, even during the later years, he gave his high C free …
Personal Study Of A Master-Singer
Personal Study Of A Master-Singer
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Today's book, Until the wing breaks-a book about Jussi Bjorling, is no ordinary biography. Yrsa Stenius makes an admirable attempt to map what happens with the man Jussi Bjorling during his short life. In the book one is tossed between hope and despair, and one puts it aside with a lump in the throat- the price of art can be terribly high, the author demonstrates.

Inspired Practice: The Values Of High School Band Directors, Gregory X. Whitmore
Visions of Research in Music Education
This study addresses how high school band directors operationalize their values for music education in their band program s. High school band directors described that their values developed from a variety of influences, namely their educator identity, and the experience of their own participation in high school and collegiate music. I employed a qualitative methodology to determine emergent themes and compare participant responses and band program curricula. Findings from this study indicate these values inform many band directors’ decisions regarding high school band curricula, which they operationalize in curricular outcomes, and through a variety of artistic and educational opportunities for …

A Worthy Il Trovatore Unearthed By Ward Marston, Goran Forsling
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
There still pop up more or less sensational historic documents in the field of recorded opera. This 60-year-old broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera was not unknown -it has even been in circulation for quite some time among collectors but then in such inferior sound that it gave very little pleasure. Now it appears, in more than acceptable sound, where both chorus and orchestra are amazingly well reproduced in a close recording. The solo voices are so life-like that they are almost touchable. Whether new original tapes have been found is not made clear in the booklet but the name Ward …

George Jellinek: My Road To Radio And "The Vocal Scene"
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
The entry in McFarland's sales catalogue of books on the performing arts begins with the statement:" George Jellinek, announcer of the beloved WQXR radio show 'The Vocal Scene'..." For those who have listened to Mr. Jellinek's programs over three decades, the statement could just as well have begun: "Beloved George Jellinek, announcer of the WQXR radio show 'the Vocal Scene'..." That might have been inappropriate in a publisher's catalog, but for his thousands of listeners and fans nationwide, it would seem to be a favor statement .
Ballo Revisited, Andrew Farkas
Ballo Revisited, Andrew Farkas
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
An inexhaustible source of frustration for writers about the past, people and events, is the ongoing discovery of relevant materials. As time passes, documents and artifacts come to light sometimes through further search, sometimes by serendipity. Every time that happens, the writer and and researcher can just grit his teeth, and either ignore the fickle hand of of fate that slipped him some useful material too late, or continue to expand on his chosen subject and append a small piece of writing to is published research.
