You may recall our invitation, offered in last April's JBS Newsletter #6, to attend England's Glyndebourne Opera Festival with other Bjorling Society members. The big attraction last summer was to be a new production of Tristan und Isolde, a first-time ever performance of Wagner in Glyndebourne.

News From Gustavus And The Minnesota Bjorlings
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Recently Anders Bjorling called to give us some news about his and wife Janet's alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College, located in their hometown of Sr. Peter. Minnesota. You may know that the music department at Gustavus has a beautiful performance space called the Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall with an impressive portrait and bust of Jussi. According to Anders, Gustavus now has installed a large display case in the lobby of Bjorling Hall to hold a permanent exhibit on Jussi's life and career, complete with a sound system and earphones.
Coming In Our Next Issue: A Discussion Of Yrsa Stenius' Controversial Book On Jussi
Coming In Our Next Issue: A Discussion Of Yrsa Stenius' Controversial Book On Jussi
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Swedish- Finnish journalist Yrsa Stenius has written an unusual appreciation of Jussi Bjorling, combining intense memories of her theatrical mother's love of the tenor's singing, her own fascination with Jussi's voice and career, and her personal reflections on the stresses of a public life-where one's reputation is always at risk. She boldly interprets known facts about Jussi's public and personal life to fit her theories of the artist's creative angst, and it seems that for many readers she has put together a plausible picture. Indeed many reviews of the book have been positive, but some have been strongly negative. What …

A big array of new releases during 2003 attest to the continuing popularity of our tenor. In addition to the expected re-releases of old favorites, two record companies have come up with exciting new material: Lets begin with the most significant two releases this year, Caprice's 1957 II Trovatore from the Royal Opera in Stockholm, and RCA Red Seal's CD of Jussi's complete 1955 Carnegie Hall recital.

One of the most agreeable privileges accorded the head of an embassy is that of being able to bask in the reflected glory of the ambassadors of Swedish culture, "an official duty" in his sphere of activity, Our country's operatic life has many such ambassadors, more that any other Western country. But the best of them all was certainly Jussi!

Breaking Hearts In Budapest, Alfred Gardner
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Following Jussi Bjorling's first tremendous successes in Vienna and Prague (March 12-19, 1936), he was quickly engaged for a return visit as soon as his responsibilities with the Stockholm Royal Opera's spring season ended. He returned to Czechoslovakia two months later and travelled on to Vienna for performances of Aida, Trovatore, and Boheme all to great acclaim. With his reputation there firmly established, Jussi was invited to return in 1937 for a longer period.

Bbc's Cd Masters Program Names Jussi Bjorling A "Featured Artist"
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
We heard from our friends Des Lockett and Eric Wimbles, of the UK's JB Appreciation Society, that the "CD Masters" radio program on BBC's Radio 3 had designated Jussi as its "Featured Artist" for the week August 18-22. This meant that the program's fine host, Rob Cowan, would be selecting and commenting on several of Jussi's recordings each day to play during the timeslot 10:00-11:30 AM, London time. We were pleased that he started of the week with a generous mention of our JB Societies, and that be provided detailed and knowledgeable commentary- as well as unhackneyed musical choices: for …

We'll report here on the currently-available program, called "Jussi Bjoerling in the 21st Century," and tell you about the next one due to hit the airwaves soon.

New Course On Jussi Bjorling At Juilliard

We were delighted to hear of the following course that was offered recently at the Juilliard School, by Prof. John Muller. The enrollment for this course was robust (25+) and thus we can expect that it may be repeated there, as well as serving as a model for similar courses and programs at other schools. Here is the program as it appeared in the Juilliard School's catalogue:

The Vocal Arts Society of Washington DC regularly presents a superb concert series of some of the best singers in the world, including promising young names as well as established stars. For instance, this season their concerts feature Renee Fleming, Susan Graham, Mattias Goerne, Ewa Podles as well as new Russian lyric tenor Daniil Shtoda, a stocky lad of 25 who gets reviews that sound something like Jussi's back in the 1930s.

JBS's conference in New York City last October 24-27 (Thursday-Sunday) presented our members with a wonderful opportunity to gather in the city which brought Jussi some of his greatest operatic triumphs. From special Jussi-centric tours of the Metropolitan Opera Archives, graciously hosted by Robert Tuggle; to programs featuring an array of outstanding speakers; a reception at Scandinavia House; performances at the Met; a sparkling closing banquet; and the special camaraderie generated whenever Jussiphiles gather- it was a truly memorable event. Probably the highlight for most of us was the Saturday panel led by George Jellinek and featuring some of Jussi's …
