The Impact Of Ballet Techniques On Singing Performers, Julie H. Welch

Singing performers are tasked to being a multifaceted artist using their acting and even dance skills in a performance. Voice teachers have long incorporated physical activity into training, but traditional ballet techniques—such as core tension and neck elongation—can contradict healthy singing practices. Given ballet’s deep historical connection to opera and stage performance, this study aims to examine whether integrating ballet into vocal training enhances or hinders a singer’s technique and overall performance. This investigation surveyed forty subjects who identified as teachers, singing performers, or students earning a performance degree and interviewing select subjects for further information; results will be discussed.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) play a crucial role in providing higher education opportunities for African American students, including those pursuing degrees in voice performance. In recent years, there has been a noticeable lack of performance opportunities and resources available to voice performance majors at HBCUs. This document aims to explore the challenges faced by HBCU voice performance majors who hoped to pursue a career in voice performance. Through a combination of literature review, qualitative interviews, and quantitative surveys, this study will examine the experience of voice performance majors from 1990 – present day. Opera, often viewed as a prestigious and elite art form, has been predominantly shaped by male composers throughout its history. The contributions of women composers in opera have been largely overlooked, however, despite their significant impact on the genre. This dissertation explores the role of female composers in opera, from pioneers like Francesca Caccini to contemporary figures such as Missy Mazzoli, arguing for the creation of a curriculum focused on their works. Audience participation in the concert hall space has developed into a rich participatory practice with specific characteristics and challenges. Though composers—especially since the 1960s—have written many pieces involving audience participation, asking the concert hall audience to participate remains uncommon. Attempting to shift the role of the audience in such a traditionally spectator-oriented space can lead to tensions that undermine the efficacy of the experience. This research categorizes participatory pieces into the structural elements of performance and facilitation forces, audience groupings, audience roles, and communication types. Haydn’s so-called Sturm und Drang symphonies are renowned for exhibiting a range of disruptive features. While some commentators have attempted to link this with a personal crisis in Haydn’s life, there is no evidence to support the idea. Furthermore, it is misleading to make an association here between stormy musical writing in general and the German literary Sturm und Drang. The principal musical topos that Haydn employs is one that I have termed tempesta, and its origins lie in the storm scenes of Baroque opera. Found object experimental music consists of compositions and performances created with objects not intended for musical performance. Found objects can range from appliances and household items to power tools and consumer products to souvenirs and heirlooms. Although these objects are used with the intent of creating musical compositions, new characteristics that are not found in traditional music emerge. One major characteristic that differentiates found object music from traditional music is that the objects have inherent cultural associations and meaning outside of their use in the composition. Broadway music is widely known for its heavy emphasis on storytelling, which goes beyond lyrics or on-stage actions but into the musical construction and development in itself. Such music has historically impacted the orchestral scene across the world, but also at a local level in Gettysburg College and its ensembles. The Gettysburg College Concert Band is a significant reflection of the College’s musical culture, which can be observed through the repertoire of their performance that took place on April 30, 1977.

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Haydn’s last opera, L’anima del filosofo (The Soul of the Philosopher), is a highly unusual retelling of the Orpheus myth. Written for London in 1791 to a libretto by C. F. Badini, the opera was never staged during the composer’s lifetime. Shut down in rehearsal and banned from performance, the opera never reached the stage because many of its themes—including the apocalyptic storm at the end—piqued British anxieties towards events unfolding in revolutionary France. The opera finally premiered in 1951, with Maria Callas singing the role of Euridice. Universal Edition prepared the performing material from sources photographed behind …

The COVID-19 crisis has disrupted the performing arts ecosystem worldwide, with an even more severe impact on classical orchestras. This study examines how 19 seasoned, established orchestra librarians and their parent organizations worldwide experienced and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study examines similarities and differences in their professional practices and experiences of coping with pandemic-related disruptions. The study sheds new light on how orchestra librarians' practices changed, along with their resilience, adaptability, sense of self-worth, and career fulfilment during COVID-19,in the context that none were furloughed or made redundant. Implementing A Paleographical Analysis To Provenance A Spanish Sanctorale, Amelia Lutz, Robert Fritz Ph.D

A 17th-century Latin sanctorale held in the collection of the Saint Meinrad Archabbey features marginalia written in Spanish, but its place of origin and past ownership is otherwise unknown. Drawing on clues derived from a paleographical analysis of marginalia and a hymn pasted into the back cover, I have gathered evidence suggesting that the sanctorale originated in or was formerly owned by one of the religious orders in the Spanish city of Alcalá de Henares. A key piece of evidence is handwriting that adapts one of the chants to praise Saints Justus and Pastor, the patron saints of Alcalá. This …

This study undertakes a comprehensive, close reading of the original version of Paz Marquez Benitez’s (PMB’s) “Dead Stars,” published in the Philippines Herald in 1925. Previous critical essays have explicated selected aspects of the 1975 version edited and published by Leopoldo Yabes, based on some of its elements and techniques. On the other hand, this close reading is supplemented by empirical data gathered through historical research, including the cultural forms of the three Philippine traditions: indigenous, Hispanic, and colonial American.
