Impact Of Statin Medication Use On Glycemic Control And Complications In Type 1 Diabetes, Ryan Bailey Mar 2026

Impact Of Statin Medication Use On Glycemic Control And Complications In Type 1 Diabetes, Ryan Bailey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA enzyme inhibitors (statins) are frequently used to prevent cardiovascular events in individuals at high risk for cardiovascular diseases, including individuals with diabetes. Prior research has indicated that statins may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and may increase hyperglycemia among those previously diagnosed with T2D. To date, little research has investigated the impact of statins on glycemic control and diabetic complications associated with poor glycemic control in those with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the association between statin use and measures of glycemic control including hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), …

In vertebrates, newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes traffic to lysosomes through the mannose-6-phosphate (M6P) pathway. The Golgi membrane protein LYSET was recently discovered to regulate lysosome biogenesis by controlling the level of GlcNAc-1-phosphotransferase (GNPT). However, its working mechanism remained unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that LYSET is a two-transmembrane protein essential for GNPT stability, cleavage by Site-1 Protease (S1P), and enzymatic activity. We reconcile conflicting models by showing that LYSET enhances GNPT cleavage and prevents its mislocalization to lysosomes for degradation. We further establish that LYSET achieves this by interacting with GOLPH3 and retromer complexes to anchor the LYSET-GNPT complex …

UNLABELLED: Systemic shifts in antimicrobial resistance rates can be due to epidemiologic shifts in microbial susceptibility patterns or artifactual shifts introduced by technical biases in antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)-both ultimately leading to changes in antimicrobial prescribing. To reduce technical variability, quality control (QC) criteria for AST are published by manufacturers and standards organizations. However, traditional QC metrics, in isolation, are fallible. In this study, we describe a systematic shift in daptomycin AST results between 2022 and 2025 in isolates tested in two independent health systems. Comprehensive analysis of clinical isolate AST results and retrospective mining of QC data from this …

Bias Evaluation Of Healthcare Data With The Use Of Vbqa - A Vaers Inspired Bias Question Answer Dataset, Nolan Dulude, Renu Karthikeyan, Bivin Sadler, Faizan Javed

SMU Data Science Review

Abstract. Large Language Models (LLMs) are being used increasingly within the healthcare industry to summarize complex clinical information, but their outputs can often reflect biases inherited from their training data. In healthcare, these biases are not just technical flaws, but they can lead to distorted and false information about vaccine safety, compromise patient trust, and lead to potential harmful outcomes. This study investigates bias found in LLM-generated outputs to question-answer pairs inspired by adverse vaccine reactions using COVID-19 data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) from 2020–2024. We examined whether training the LLMs on a known Bias Benchmark …

Paternal Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, And Resilience (P-Apgar): A Conceptual Framework For Fathers’ Perinatal Psychosocial Adjustment, Rachael Elizabeth Schmitz

Nursing and Health Sciences

Paternal perinatal depression is underrecognized, and existing tools often fail to capture male-specific symptomatic expressions. Fathers experience significant psychosocial changes during the transitional period, yet clinical assessment of paternal mental health remains largely absent from routine clinical practice. This paper introduces a multi-dimensional tool called the P-APGAR. The theory-informed conceptual tool is meant to guide the assessment of fathers’ perinatal adjustment, operationalizing core elements of role-based, relational, and emotional adaptation. The model adapts the logic of the traditional newborn APGAR score to a father-centered context based on Paternal Identity, Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, and Resilience. A theoretical synthesis approach …

The Role Of Personality In Collegiate Athletes’ Indicators Of Performance And Injury Experiences – A Mixed Methods Study, Allison Traub

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This mixed methods study explores the impact of collegiate athletes' indicators of personality traits as attributed to athletic performance, injury experiences, and sport identity. Sports often emphasize physical abilities, yet the role of personality is equally significant—though it has received comparatively little attention in psychological research. This research addresses such a gap through examining how personality traits shape athletes’ competitive behavior along with coping strategies. The traits are defined within the 16 Personalities framework using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and how it influences just how athletes recover. This research will explore research questions such as how personality affects college athletes' …
