The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.

This thesis, presented for the degree of Bachelor of Science, provides a systematic chemical study of the alkaloids, a class of complex nitrogenous plant substances possessing basic properties. Barre opens by defining the alkaloids and surveying the various systems used to classify them, whether by natural versus artificial origin, chemical nucleus (pyridine, quinoline, or isoquinoline), volatility, or botanical family of origin, and outlines their general physical and chemical properties, including solubility, optical activity, and characteristic reactions with precipitating and color-test reagents.

The maxillary sinus occupies the body o:r the maxilla, and is situated lateral to the lower half of the nasal cavity, below the orbit, and in front or the intra-temporal fossa. lts average size is about 35 m.m. in height, 30 m.m. in antero-posterior depth, and 25 m.m. in mesio-distal depth. Pyorrhoea is one of the best known and commonest diseases in civilization. A certain dental company is advertising that four out of five are infected by this disease. This company has been lenient in their accusation, as men who are ardent students of pyorrhoea state specifically that 90 per cent of the world’s population have it in some form or other or have symptoms which would eventually turn into pyorrhoea. The great problem facing the dental profession in obtaining successful root canal fillings is resolved into two problems:

1. That of removing the dental pulp aseptically and preparing aseptic areas for the reception of the filling material.

2. The selection and adaptation of materials which will effectively seal the apex without irritation to the underlying structures and the periapical tissues. The property of excluding moisture and bacteria must also be carefully considered.

The discovery of a relationship between ill health and defective teeth is by no means recent. It has received casual mention.in the older literature and has been independently recognized, perhaps for centuries, by practitioners of medicine and dentistry. The subject has not received the prominence it deserves, however, previous to the past decade. The earlier idea of such a relation was, however, limited largely to acute generalized infection from a wound, or surgical sepsis. Rarely a clinician had a wider conception of the possible effects of a local infection.

Hemorrhage, or the discharge of blood from a ruptured blood vessel during life, constitutes one of the normal results of every operation of tooth extraction. In the majority of cases its control is simple, as it ceases within a short time and need be no cause for alarm. In exceptional cases, however, the discharge may be prolonged and excessive and cause, not only great anxiety to the dentist, but also much mental stress and a condition of extreme physical exhaustion to the patient. The gold inlay restoration has been used in dentistry for many years, the first ones being m~de by making a matrix of platinum or gold of about thirty-six to forty gauge in thickness, and then melting pure gold or solder of gold into the matrix. The determination of Calcium in the blood of Arthritic patients as an interesting problem was suggested by Doctor J. C. Metts, physician at the Sacred Heart Sanitarium from August 1927 to September 1930, and encouraged by Doctor F. W. Mackoy, present physician at the Sanitarium.

All the experimental work was carried on in the Laboratory of the Sacred Heart Sanitarium and all the specimens of blood were taken from cases present at the Sanitarium during the time of the writing of this thesis.
