Metabolic Acidosis And Respiratory Compensation In Uremia During Hemodialysis, Robert D. Gilbert
Metabolic Acidosis And Respiratory Compensation In Uremia During Hemodialysis, Robert D. Gilbert
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Introduction] In chronic renal insufficiency one of the products of metabolism which accumulates in the body is the hydrogen ion. The phosphoric, sulfuric, and organic acids usually eliminated in the urine accumulate. The respiratory system can and does decrease the hydrogen ion content of the body by decreasing the amount of carbonic acid present. The accumulating hydrogen ions also react with various bases throughout the body. The net result of metabolic production, respiratory elimination, and body buffering is reflected in the blood as chronic, partially compensated, metabolic acidosis. As expected the carbonic acid and block buffer concentrations are …

Apothecary
The end of the academic year heralds the arrival of the 1970 APOTHECARY. It has been a fast-paced, hectic time for all. For some, this ends the formal pharmacy curriculum and thus many new situations lie ahead. The 1970 APOTHECARY would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Seniors the best of luck in the future and hearty congratulations on their achievements.
We are very proud of this edition of the APOTHECARY and we want to thank everyone involved in its completion. Certainly, the most "credit" goes to Dr. Ulrich, faculty sponsor. He made most of the …

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: New Thoughts, Wendell F. Rosse
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
I have tried to summarize some of the facts we know, and some questions we need to ask in a disease which, although it is not common, probably is not as rare as we once thought. Once the diagnosis is made, one must be very careful in tending to the patients, since there are instances in which they react much differently than would normal people--either by the hemolytic episode or with other complications. This is especially true with regard to surgery, which may be extremely dangerous in these patients. The post-operative course may be complicated by thrombosis, infections, and other …
The New Hemoglobinopathies, Robert M. Cooper
The New Hemoglobinopathies, Robert M. Cooper
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The clinical explorations which have resulted from studies of mutant hemoglobin have allowed definition of a variety of syndromes whose manifestations require explanation in terms of the effects of molecular distortion on physiological processes. The discovery of various hemoglobinopathies has demonstrated that specific molecular defects may express themselves in various pathophysiological manifestations. More detailed pathophysiological studies of patients with hemoglobinopathies should be performed to gain a better understanding of the expression of molecular disease.

Transfusion Problems In Hemolytic Anemias, Ali A. Hossaini
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In this presentation I have attempted to present some of the transfusion problems that face the Blood Bank and the physician treating the patient. I have briefly discussed methods of recognizing the complicating factors, interpretation of their clinical significance, and the proper hemotherapeutic management of such cases. Finally, I hope that this presentation is a convincing thesis for a better understanding of the Blood Bank and its problems, since the patient's welfare is better served when there is a rapport between the clinician and the Blood Bank staff.
Better Care At Less Cost Without Miracles, Edmund K. Faltermayer
Better Care At Less Cost Without Miracles, Edmund K. Faltermayer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Our present system of medical care is not a system at all. The majority of physicians, operating alone as private entrepreneurs, constitute an army of pushcart vendors in an age of supermarkets. Most patients pay by the cumbersome "fee-for-service" or piecework method, which involves separate billing for visits to doctors, shots, x-rays, laboratory tests, surgery, anesthesia, hospital room and board, etc., etc. The American hospital system, as Herman M. and Anne R. Somers of Princeton University said in their book, Medicare and the Hospitals, "is largely a figure of speech," the result of a haphazard growth of isolated, uncoordinated institutions.

The Administration and Congress are understandably disturbed by the soaring costs of Medicare and Medicaid, the programs that provide health care for the aged and for others adjudged unable to pay medical and hospital bills. Costs of the programs have doubled since they went into effect four years ago.
Drug Abuse In Our Community, George M. Bright
Drug Abuse In Our Community, George M. Bright
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
What is new about people taking drugs: Nothing! Our society is a drug-oriented society. We have been both using drugs and, at times, abusing them for years. Furthermore, drug abuse has been written about for hundreds of years. What is alarming today, however, is the number of youth who are joining the drug scene from our junior high, high schools and colleges throughout the country. Fortunately, many of these will be involved only temporarily. Others will develop physical and psychological problems as a consequence of their involvement. Our responsibility is not limited to the small percentage that have short or …
Physician Assistants: New Positions And Expanding Roles In U.S. Medical Care, F. J. Spencer
Physician Assistants: New Positions And Expanding Roles In U.S. Medical Care, F. J. Spencer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
There are now 20 operating programs for physician assistants in the United States (Kadish and Long, 1970). Many people agree that the physician assistant is a reality and will be a component of American medicine in the future. Acceptance of the physician assistant by the medical profession has been variable but a recent survey in Wisconsin reveals that, of the physicians surveyed, 61 percent believe that a physician assistant of some type is needed and 42 percent would use him in practice. There is, therefore, indication that the physician assistant will become and established member of the health practice team. …

High Pre-Mating Liveweights Improve The Lambing Performance Of Merino Ewes, R J. Suiter
High Pre-Mating Liveweights Improve The Lambing Performance Of Merino Ewes, R J. Suiter
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Analysis of lambing trials with Merino ewes has shown a highly significant association between pre-mating liveweight and lambing performance.
With May-June lambing ewes there was a 2.9 per cent, lambing increase for every extra 10 lb. liveweight; for July-August- September lambing ewes there was a 6.9 per cent, increase for every 10 lb. liveweight increase.
With the May-June lambing there was a critical weight below which twinning was negligible.
Maintaining Ewe Bodyweight For A Late Mating, T Marshall
Maintaining Ewe Bodyweight For A Late Mating, T Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE experiments have indicated that the bodyweight of ewes at mating can have a large bearing on lambing performance.
It appears that for every 10 lb. increase in pre-mating bodyweight, an increase of some 3 to 6 per cent, lambs born could be expected, depending on the lambing time.

Effects Of Mastitis On Milk Yield And Composition, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
EVERY DAIRY farmer knows how much he spends on the treatment of cows affected with mastitis, but the actual loss in production is more difficult to estimate.
As part of the current mastitis research programme the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Dairying Divisions surveyed 37 dairy herds with a believed high incidence of mastitis.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The use of high concentrate rations in finishing cattle has led to a rather high loss of livers due to abscesses.
The 1967 Statistical Summary of the Federal Meat Inspection Service of the USDA indicated the total number of cattle inspected was 27,859,980. Of these, 9.6% were condemned because of liver abscess. Considering the value of a liver to be about $3, the estimated loss to the industry because of condemnatIon due to abscess would be over $8 million annually.
The incidence of liver abscesses increases as the roughage level in a finishing ration decreases below 5% (Table I). The …

Later Mating Improves Lambing Results, R J. Suiter
Later Mating Improves Lambing Results, R J. Suiter
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Ovulation studies in Western Australia have indicated that increased lambing percentages in crossbred and Merino ewes could be expected from mating in February-April rather than December- January.
Such increases have been demonstrated in time of lambing trials with crossbred ewes, but had not been seen in Merino flocks until recently.
This report summarises the results of time of lambing trials with Merinos carried out at the Merredin and Wongan Hills Research Stations between 1963 and 1969.
