Solar Retinopathy Following The Eclipse Of March 7, 1970: A Follow-Up, Walter J. Geeraets Jan 1970

Solar Retinopathy Following The Eclipse Of March 7, 1970: A Follow-Up, Walter J. Geeraets

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In the last issue of this journal (Medical College of Virginia Quarterly 6: 3, 1970) Thomas W. Nooney, Joseph R. Svoboda, Florencio Ching and I reported two cases of binocular injury and one case of unilateral retinal burn of the fovea caused by watching the recent solar eclipse in the Richmond, Virginia area. Since reporting our local cases, a survey has been completed through other Virginia ophthalmologists of the occurrence of solar retinopathy throughout the state. Nine additional cases of ocular involvement were revealed in the survey and are reported here in table form. The cases are listed in order …

A New Climate, Alan Pifer Jan 1970

A New Climate, Alan Pifer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

One of the more striking changes taking place in American medicine these days is the increasing disposition of laymen to sound off about it in public. Whether this is also one of the more important changes, you will have the opportunity to judge by the conclusion of this morning's program. Certainly no one could say that the AAMC, in planning this year's annual meeting, tried to shield itself from exposure to this kind of change.

Health Services In Australia, D. J. R. Snow Jan 1970

Health Services In Australia, D. J. R. Snow

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The establishment of the Federal Health Service stemmed from the need to exclude dangerous infectious diseases from Australia. Disease such as smallpox and plague were constant threats to a country newly settled by Europeans with maritime ties, and cholera was endemic in neighboring countries. There were also the less immediate but acknowledged risks of the introduction into Australia of yellow fever and louse typhus. In other words, the earliest Federal Health Service was essentially a quarantine service -established on the basis of meticulous maritime quarantine and supported by a specially trained staff of quarantine medical officers with a chain of …

Special Characteristics Of Adopted Children And Adoptive Parents As Seen In A Psychiatric Practice, Lillian C. Lindemann, Virginia A. Saunders Jan 1970

Special Characteristics Of Adopted Children And Adoptive Parents As Seen In A Psychiatric Practice, Lillian C. Lindemann, Virginia A. Saunders

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

We have presented these characteristics of 22 adopted children and 20 sets of adoptive parents viewed as special by a team of child psychiatrists and a psychiatric social worker in a private setting. Material derived from psychological test protocols was included in the study. No attempt has been made to statistically validate the findings and the presentation has been descriptive. The reality of an abandonment experience would appear to be a major element in the anxiety experienced by the adopted child. This source of anxiety is the one element that distinguishes the emotionally disturbed adopted child from the emotionally disturbed …

Problems In Rating Disturbed Behavior, Harold C. Batchelder, Benjamin C. Hammett Jan 1970

Problems In Rating Disturbed Behavior, Harold C. Batchelder, Benjamin C. Hammett

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This past year Dr. Hammett and I have embarked on a research voyage and, if I may be permitted to use the analogy of a cruise once again, we have been on the slowest of freighters. The Ancient Mariner is our spiritual brother. In speaking of the problems of research, one of the problems is time! There are no short-cuts. There has been, for some time, an increasing awareness of the need to look at the causes as well as methods of treating emotional disturbance in children. Because of the addition of new staff members we have been able to …

The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer Jan 1970

The Development Of A Comprehensive Health Care Program For Patients With Active Tuberculosis, Grace G. Eddison, Barbara M. Farmer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Concepts basic to effective medical care evolved from the development of a comprehensive health service program for patients with tuberculosis. The key to success was found in a basic philosophy underlying all interpersonal relationships-the conviction that all men are equal. This philosophy then became the motivating force behind the creation of a functioning multidisciplinary team in which there was developed a freedom of relationships between each team member, and between team members and patients. The effectiveness of this approach in comprehensive medical care was illustrated by examples of special services and programming which were designed to reach all levels of …

Severe School Phobia, Douglas F. Powers, Hugh Mcmahan, Carol Mcnally Owens Jan 1970

Severe School Phobia, Douglas F. Powers, Hugh Mcmahan, Carol Mcnally Owens

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This presentation has emphasized that the under-lying conflict in school phobias begins as bilateral separation anxiety between mother and young child. This unhealthy symbiotic relationship, occurring during the time that the child is trying to develop his own autonomy, cripples his ability to cope with the separation anxiety when he goes to school, or in the face of certain life events such as a move, illness, or birth of a sibling which revive this early anxiety. The response is a disturbed pattern of school attendance which may range from mild to severe and acute to chronic. These basic conflicts represent …

Psycho-Social Aspects Of Drug Abuse By Modern Youth, James L. Mathis Jan 1970

Psycho-Social Aspects Of Drug Abuse By Modern Youth, James L. Mathis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Research in human behavior rarely lends itself to the scientific rigors which allow for definitive cause and effect answers even if they exist. Perhaps no facet of human life has a simple origin, and certainly that is true of behavior which involves all levels of personality function and social interaction such as occurs in drug abuse. Drug abuse undoubtedly is overdetermined behavior with multiple etiological factors in a constantly fluxuating interaction. Most observers agree that drug abuse by the youth has become a major problem, but differences arise when the sociological and psychological factors of etiology are discussed. The many …

One Industry's Involvement In Health Care, Edgar F. Kaiser Jan 1970

One Industry's Involvement In Health Care, Edgar F. Kaiser

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The title of my remarks is somewhat misleading, because the Kaiser companies are involved in a number of industries. Our founder started his corporate business career as a contractor in 1914, building highways and paving streets in British Columbia, Canada. Therefore, our first experience with medical care arose from the construction business.

Accidental Hypothermia In Medico-Legal Practice, Keith A. Mant Jan 1970

Accidental Hypothermia In Medico-Legal Practice, Keith A. Mant

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The autopsy findings in 28 cases of fatal hypothermia have been described. Hypothermia, in temperate climates, is one of the complications of longevity. The hypothermic state may be precipitated by a wide range of natural diseases, especially chronic cardiac disease. The classical case of hypothermia may be recognized at post-mortem by the myxoedematous appearance of the patient and the presence of gastric and pancreatic lesions.

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Daniel N. Mohler Jan 1970

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Daniel N. Mohler

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Major attention was first focused on the problem of acute hemolytic anemia in the early 1950's, during the Korean War. Large numbers of American Negroes stationed in Korea developed this anemia after taking primaquine for treatment or prophylaxis of malaria. A study group was formed in Chicago under the direction of Alving; it was this group of investigators who contributed much of the early information which has led to our understanding of this type of anemia (Dern, et al, 1954; Dern, Beutler and Alving, 1954; Beutler, Dern, and Alving, 1954). This also resulted in an upsurge of interest in red …

New Thoughts On Hereditary Spherocytosis, Robert I. Weed Jan 1970

New Thoughts On Hereditary Spherocytosis, Robert I. Weed

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In addition to its accentuated pattern of rigidity at decreasing ATP/Ca ratios, the hereditary spherocyte poses a special challenge within the splenic pulp because of its shape. In addition to the geometric requirement for deformability, the spleen also poses a challenge to HS cells because of its pH, and probably also the pO₂ within the splenic pulp. Thus, it is suggested that splenectomy is essentially curative in hereditary spherocytosis because it removes an organ with unique anatomic requirements for red cell passage as well as an adverse environment of lower pH and pO₂.

Penicillin Allergy And Hypersensitivity Fever, Michael Joseph Chusid Jan 1970

Penicillin Allergy And Hypersensitivity Fever, Michael Joseph Chusid

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Summary] Rabbits immunized to benzylpenicillin G were found to develop circulating anti-benzylpenicillin antibodies. After immunization, challenge of these animals with intravenous aqueous penicillin was ineffective in eliciting fever. However, intravenous challenge with a penicillin-rabbit serum protein conjugate led to typical hypersensitivity fevers which were roughly correlated in magnitude with titers of benzylpenicillin antibody. Febrile tolerance developed after one or two challenges with the conjugate. This form of hypersensitivity appeared to be transferable with plasma of immunized donors to normal rabbits. Finally, blood leukocytes of immunized rabbits incubated with penicillin-protected conjugate and hypersensitive serum released pyrogen in vitro while …
